Where you’ll be

Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Edinburgh is the historic and capital city of Scotland. Relatively compact and small for a capital city, it boasts a cosmopolitan atmosphere and is best explored on foot or on the city tour buses. A city of great architecture, from the rambling tenements of the Old Town to the Georgian elegance of the terraces and crescents of the New Town, it is a city of visual delights. Both areas are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Edinburgh is renowned world-wide as the Festival City; from the International Film Festival in June, the Jazz & Blues Festival in July to the International Book Festival, The Fringe and the International Festival which all take place in August. In addition to the Festivals, Edinburgh's Museums and Art Galleries host pieces from some of the world's greatest artists and the National Museum of Scotland is wonderfully geared towards entertaining small children, especially on a rainy day!

The city has also been a home to the great writers, thinkers & inventors of their time. As you explore the city you will see plaques on historic buildings informing that some of the city's most famous people once lived there.. Look out for Sir James Young Simpson, the discoverer of chloroform, on Queen Street; Pamure House at the bottom of the Royal Mile is the only surviving home of the great philosopher of the Scottish Enlightenment, Adam Smith and the well-known author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in Palmerston Place. Some of today's well-known writers including, J K Rowling, Alexander McCall Smith, and Ian Rankin all live in the City.

The Scottish larder has an abundance of wonderful ingredients, from seafood and shellfish, out-door reared beef, lamb, venison and game, to local vegetables, herbs and soft fruits. There is no shortage of options for dining in Edinburgh from Mitchelin-starred and award-winning owner-chef restaurants serving the best of Scottish cusine to lively gastro-pubs and gourmet burger bars and wonderful international dining. There is also a local farmer's market on Castle Terrace at the back of Edinburgh Castle where you can buy an array of local produce.

For those who wish to explore further, it only takes minutes to get to the beaches and golf-courses of East Lothian, or travel further afield to the Borders or across the bridge to Fife for walking, cycling, golf, horse-riding or sample some of the local produce in the many local cafes and restaurants.

Edinburgh is often described as a city formed of many villages. The historic Port of Leith is one if those.

The 'Shore' area of Edinburgh is the vibrant port area of the city. On the 'Shore' you will find a fantastic selection of bars & restaurants, including Michelin starred and award winning owner-chef restaurants all a few hundred meters from the apartment. I have listed a range of bars & restaurants in the 'Guidebook' section that I can recommend from Michelin starred to Gastropub. There is something for everyone.

There is a local supermarket, post office and ATM within a 2 minutes walk and the Ocean Terminal shopping centre with bars, restaurants & a multiplex cinema is just a 10 minute walk away. The children's play-park at Leith Links is within a 5 minute walk.

We would be delighted to assist with any queries you have about your stay.

I am from Scotland & I have lived in Edinburgh for over 15 years. Whilst I commute both to London and Spain for work, I would always want my home to be based in Edinburgh. I just love the city! I have lived & worked in Brussels, France & Spain, travelled alot in the USA & Turkey and I am fluent in French & Spanish. I love to experience local culture where ever we go as a family. Most often when we travel we book a private house/apartment as it gives us more space & lots of flexibility. I always want to be in Edinburgh during the Festival, never for the weather but just for the wonderful, vibrant atmosphere, the range of events from, comedy, theatre, opera, dance, literature, music & film. There is truly something for everyone. There are also a great selection of restaurants in Edinburgh & I am happy to share my favorites! Autumn & winter are great times to explore Edinburgh & the surrounding areas away from the crowds. Edinburgh is definately a great city to explore on foot; there are hills, beaches & city gardens all within a 3 mile radius of the city centre. As a family we like to explore Islands off the West coast of Scotland which are listed as some of the most stunning places in the world; but remember to come to Edinburgh first! Please don't hesitate if you have questions about your stay & I will assist where ever possible. Welcome & enjoy your stay. Best wishes, Samantha
