Slightly worrying that we did not meet our host almost 24 hours after we checked in! And the pool was empty, the TV didn't work, nor the wifi.... Not the magical Mérida expected! Yes, Maricarmen had upgraded us, yes, she did ask our arrival time.... But still no Jesus there! We had to ask the builders for local information - like where was the nearest supermarket! No taxis about either.... Eventually, things were sorted out (although the pool was drained another day for repainting!) and new wifi installed whilst we were there. The apartments are well supplied with all the things you need for a self catering break and the beds are very comfortable. Be aware, the location is far from Centro, only a 7 peso bus ride, taking about 20 minutes. And approx 150 pesos from the ADO terminal - asked for the full address as two drivers refused to take us there to start with!

Response from Maricarmen:
A bit disappointed to read this, Sue. Especially because we were more than happy to offer you the free of charge upgrade and solved all your requests the very next morning. It's not a given to meet the hosts upon check in (or at all) - as long as you have access and the keys to the extremely economic but yet 100% comfortable estudio that you booked. My Dad had a crazy day that afternoon as I communicated to you but he's always around to make the guests feel at home, as the other many reviews suggest. It is important to remember that the Airbnb community is made up of real people with real homes where real and normal living things happen, as the fact that a pool has to be cleaned.

The apartment is in a family neighborhood with lots of charm. The apartment is secure, clean and is a beautifully gardened courtyard with a sparkling blue pool! Senor Jesus was so helpful and kind. The location is right near public transportation and using Uber is super cheap and easy! Centro has beautiful parks, museums, many delicious restaurants and bars. The ruins, cenotes and beaches are all within 1 hour away. Merida is wonderful, everyone was kind and welcoming.

We stayed at Maricarmen's place for our week-long vacation looking for an authentic Mexican experience, and if this is what you're looking for, you'll definitely get it here. A bit away from the glitz of central Merida, the apartment's location is great if you're thinking of renting a car and doing several day trips around Merida. (Parking is super easy) The pool is the best feature and Jesus is just the nicest, but we've had a few mishaps. The apartment is missing a few basic amenities in my own opinion (pots, cutting knifes, can opener, beer opener, corkscrew, etc.) there was salt, but no pepper. Little things. We also didn't have anything to wash dishes with so we ended up buying a sponge, but at one point the water in the kitchen and the bathroom was cut, but we only noticed late at night when it ran out during my boyfriend's shower. Jesus fixed it quickly the next morning, but the water never flew in the kitchen before we left. An extra blanket would've been nice since my boyfriend developed a fever and was freezing, but we only had the one sheet to cover ourselves with. There is also a ventilation trap above the oven that lets in a bit of heat and a lot of sounds, mainly the construction happening next door and the cat that was clearly in heat, so our nights/mornings were often interrupted, but that's just the city life :) The shower had a bit of mold and the bathroom faucet could use a shot of CLR because the water goes in every direction but down; those are easy fixes. All in all, we enjoyed our stay

Maria's place was wonderful! The apartment is excellent: spacious (much more so than in the photos), comfortable, and clean. There is an amazing pool just a few footsteps from the door of the apartment. We stayed for four nights and were able to relax and feel like we lived in Merida. The colonnia (neighborhood) is really cute, a few blocks away from an awesome Sunday flea market and daily food market, really nice people and families everywhere, and yummy comida economica! As written in the description, the apartment is not in the center, but we prefer to stay among locals as opposed to the more commercial, touristy centers-- so it was PERFECT for us. The place is located close to a main road that goes straight into the center. We had a car and were able to take easy day trips and went into the center a bunch too, but we were also able to jump on a bus easily for a few hours getaway to Progresso when we wanted a break from driving. This is a special spot, and makes an excellent home base and place to get to know a local community. The hosts were wonderful too!!!!!!! THANK YOU! See you next time, we will definitely be back!
