The space

The old saying for real estate about “location, location, location” proves especially true for Casa de Fuente. This Spanish Colonial corner-lot home–with excellent southern sun & light–perches atop the crest of the Balcones neighborhood with downward-sloping city and Presa (lake) vistas from every room! Rarely does a home in San Miguel offer stunning long-distance vistas from the entrance-level public living areas surpassed only by the veranda vistas from each bedroom. With an outdoor grassy amphitheater below, Casa de Fuente enjoys open exposure on three sides, offering unparalleled natural light and sunshine, as well as protected vistas.

Do you enjoy an entertaining lifestyle? You’ve found it here, from the sunset-vista fireplace veranda flowing directly from the open-living plan, to the abundant gardens surrounding the oversized hot tub terrace. Design details abound: cantera floors and details, six fireplaces, a barrel-vaulted & stenciled art gallery and office suite, and a floor plan offering owners complete privacy with a crow’s-nest master suite with separate access and its own rooftop succulent garden. Every bedroom (4 bedrooms) boasts luxurious bathrooms with distant vistas or private balconies, while guests enjoy oversized sitting-room suites with hammock balconies surpassing any hotel in town. Complete with all the expected amenities–from purified water to house security, a gardener and house keeper, to a garage and abundant off-street parking–Casa de Fuente overwhelms even the most discerning homeowner with a penchant for entertaining in style.

Renting Casa de la Fuente was a superb choice for our first visit to San Miguel de Allende. We were celebrating a 50th. Wedding anniversary and so wanted to have an exciting and memorable “home” in the area. It was the perfect solution for us. The fact that it is up on a hill was so nice that it was quieter and the views were spectacular. We loved walking down to El Centro (took about 20 min.) each day and took a different route each time…can’t get lost – down hill is down hill. Taxis were everywhere and very reasonable – if called from the house it took about 5 min. for them to come. We stayed in the bedroom on the second floor, instead of the “master” and found it amazingly comfortable, spacious, great view, and a great deck. The staff could not have been any more attentive and gracious. Catalina, did some laundry for us and fixed a breakfast when we asked – but we found it so easy to pick up pastry, and fruit in town, to have with our coffee each morning. Carlos did a great job keeping the outside perfect. Alberto, who’s English is very good, was a real plus for us. He translated on several occasions and advised us on side trips, taxi protocol, food etc. He was informative, gracious and a real gentleman. Our host Jim made this an easy choice, as he helped with our many questions and gave us such useful information that we were confident about renting his home. The trip was absolutely wonderful and the home a true jewel. We were there for 9 days and they were all very special; be sure to go to Galeria Atotonilco (need a reservation) for excellent folk art, historic photographs, textiles, etc. It is near La Gruta, and a very “zen” restaurant named Nirvana (excellent food). Thank you Jim for such a great home base.

This was our first visit to San Miguel de Allende and we really lucked out with our choice of Jim's home. Jim was easy to work with and sent us a letter with lots of (URL HIDDEN) we knew just what to expect. He even suggested a place for dinner for our first night that would be fun and be a good beginning for our vacation. The house is lovely. It is tucked away in an area of the city called Balcones. The plus side to this location is that it is a quiet and private area of lovely newer homes and the views are spectacular. The view from our bedroom was magical. The nights were filled with twinkling lights sparkling in the city below. The negative side is that it is a long and steep walk into town and a difficult uphill climb to return. This turned out to be no problem as cabs were very inexpensive and we called for one when we needed one at the house and had no problem finding one downtown when we needed to return.I found that even people that stayed in the Centro area found it necessary to take cabs since the steep and winding cobblestones streets do not make navigation easy. The absolute best feature of the house is the incredible staff. We fell in love with Alberto, Catalina and Carlos. They couldn't have been nicer or more helpful people. They made our one month stay a special time, that we will always remember. Alberto's English was great and he was there for any questions or help that we needed. Catalina served us breakfast each morning with a bright and happy smile and did our laundry and kept everything bright and clean, and Carlos worked all day keeping the grounds picture perfect. The hike up to the master bedroom suite was a lot of stairs for us older folks...but once up there it was worth every step. At first, I was feeling a little sorry that we had not picked a location in the Centro, but I quickly came to realize that the Centro was a very noisy area with buses and horns and fiestas, while we were happily above the fray. I would not hesitate to recommend this location for a marvelous time in San Miguel. Do visit the Botanical Gardens, La Gruta (the mineral springs) and venture out of town to places like B'ui and La Temporada for lunch. We took cabs to all of these locations and more. We even managed a trip to Delores Hidalgo to purchase lovely Talavera dishes. If you are looking for a lovely place to spend a wonderful vacation in San Miguel de Allende do not hesitate to make arrangements with Jim and stay in his lovely Casa...you will be glad you did.
