The space

Our two new architecturally designed units offer stylish and modern, boutique accommodation with indoor-outdoor flow onto expansive decking.

The Blue Studio offers stylish and tranquil boutique accommodation for you to relax in. Whether you are on a romantic get away or just ‘time out’ for a single person, the Blue Studio offers you peace and tranquility. You can venture out to sample the unique offerings of Mapua Village or stay put and have everything you need at your fingertips.

With 40sqm of interior space, this open plan unit is spacious and well equipped with a wet bar, dining area and lounge space. The interior opens onto a private 25sqm deck with a covered outdoor kitchen and outdoor furniture providing an extension to your living space.

With one queen bed this unit is ideally suited to a single or couple; however a single trundler bed can be added for an additional guest if needed. Our ability to accomodate an additional guest in this unit is dependent the total number of guests booked in both units at the time. We have a limit of 6 people at any one time in the complex so that everyone has enough space and privacy.

Attached by a breezeway to the Orange Apartment, the two units can be booked together to offer proximity for those ‘together’ times with extended family or friends, but also offer individual privacy for ‘time-out’.

John was a great host, very welcoming. The 7.8 earthquake struck at midnight when we were staying, he was straight over making sure we were alright and gave us a headlamp in case anything else happened. Much appreciated. Will definitely stay again and highly recommended.

Thanks Ian. I'm glad we all had a mountain range between us and the big quake that hit Kaikoura and the East Coast of the South Island early Monday am . Ever since the earthquake experiences Lynne and I had in Christchurch we keep one of those little flashlight headlamps close by! Hope you became relaxed enough to enjoy the rest of your stay in and around the Mapua wharf and village. Next time...the Abel Tasman!!

This is a wonderful place to stay. The Blue Studio is superb with it's contemporary decor and private deck with barbecue, and the laundry facilities in the garage were useful too. John and Lynne are most welcoming and we made good use of the discount vouchers for local restaurants and the bakery. We greatly enjoyed our meals at the wharf. Mapua is an excellent base for exploring the local vineyards and the many high quality arts and crafts people in the area. Definitely a place to come back to.

Response from John & Lynne:
Hi Lesley Thank you for a lovely review...and for being such warm , friendly guests. About the Blue Studio and cooking.....Unfortunately our local council regulations do not permit two full cooking facilities (ie two kitchens) in one residence....well, not unless an owner is prepared to pay $20, 000 "development contribution" and have that second "kitchen" be treated as if it were in fact a second residence (ie pay annual local rates on it too). Unlike great cities like Vancouver, where fully equipped secondary suites are permitted , and encouraged, our local governments around NZ are too short sited to see the benefits for their citizens, and themselves. SO there is an active "grey market" throughout NZ in undisclosed fully equipped secondary suites. Lynne and I didn't want to go down that route, so we did the only sensible thing - we moved the cooking facilties outside to an amazing deck! Outdoor kitchens and entertainment areas are, it seems, permissible. So, we have a great outdoor BBQ with side burner and hot and cold running water and sink, and electrical outlets ....outside. Since the weather is decent most of the year here, and the bench-top for cooking under a pergola cover for when the weather isn't so agreeable , one can cook outside pretty well all year. Poached eggs on toast in the morning , coffee on the deck, anything one can grill , including roasts, on the BBQ grill and rotisserie in the evening.....with no meat or other cooking smells (URL HIDDEN) works! But for longer term stays where full cooking is desired or needed, the Orange Apartment would be a better option. We, and hundreds of other local accommodation providers, would love to see those outdated regulations and 2 kitchens in one residence be changed, Then we could have both! A convenient indoor cooking facility (as in the Orange Apartment) plus a great outdoor facility! Hope to see you and/or yoru sister Fiona again John and Lynne

Our stay here was one of the highlights of our trip! John and Lynn are lovely and made us feel welcome. Can't say enough good things about the beautiful and boutique apartment with high end finishes, complete with lots of details that make it well appointed, comfortable, and clean. Loved the outdoor deck with grill. Great base for a long stay to explore the Nelson and Abel Tasman region. Our only regret was that we only stayed two nights. Would love to come back and stay longer.

Thanks Maryam It was great to meet you and Pim - and chat a little about an old haunt for me (Palo Alto). I hope the rest of your visit to NZ went well - please do get in touch if you or friends or family ever want to visit "down under" again.

John and I moved to Mapua in February 2015. We fell ‘in love’ with the Village during a family camping holiday in 2012 and decided to build a home here. It’s been an adventure and we have met some great people – it’s such a friendly place. John is semi-retired and a keen cyclist, gardener and DIYer. I’m not such a keen cyclist or gardener but I try. Now that we live on the Great Taste Cycle Trail cycling has more appeal. We have lots of landscaping to do around our new homes and I’m sure that will keep us busy for a while. We are hoping that by next year we will have an outdoor fire pit and pizza oven as a social/common area for our guests and ourselves. I’m looking forward to enjoying pizza and conversation with our guests but I suspect before then I’ll be doing some digging!
