Interaction with guests
As often as you like. We will help acclimate you to the building and the neighborhood.
Adjacent front room common spaces might be accessed by building personnel or a potential suite-mate (which is rare but does happen so don't dance naked on the front porch lol!). No illusions about an unshared world even though these old luxury suites make one feel as if swimming in space. Far from the maddening crowds. help lower our carbon footprint!
This building is dedicated to art, literature, music, meditation and gardening with the occasional dinner, movie, music salon or art exhibition popping up somewhere in the building. You may not even be aware because the walls are well plastered in silence—stiff upper lip of early 20th century bricks and mortar. Alice thru the looking glass.
There are 2 light-filled English basement units (one houses the Salon des Refuse art gallery). A movie theater with century-old synagogue seats fills the former coal room. Doctors, scholars, writers, musicians and artists come go like birds.
RTA transit (bus and rapid) every which way you look. The #3, # 10, RTA Red Line to Little Italy/University Circle, MLK boulevard to I-90 a hop skip & jump
Other things to note
Gently used items undergird our spaces. We practice saving grace as an active principle, by recycling and transforming things to kee them out of the landfill. Its all about reuse. This means our building is a funky, eclectic, creative project.
Do not expect so-called "updated" projects or a shiny new kitchen, bathroom or floors. This is a restoration project. We take things slow out of respect for the building crafts. A cupboard is a holding Space. That is its bare function. Nothing fancy. Just a storage space. This is an anti-consumer eco-arts initiative.
Long term guests are expected to sign a short-term lease/release form upon arriving.
And no, we will not key our 100 year old doors. We enjoy a safe secure building because this is our home. And yours while you are present.
Keep it clean and neat. Recycling and composting is important here.
No candles, incense or toasters. No parties without written approval. Do your thing but be peaceful about it.
Please do not run water while washing dishes. We appreciate your help keeping energy costs down by filling a dish pan and soaking/washing dishes in it.
We compost fruit, vegetables, coffee grains and empty egg shells.
This is a very quiet building except for when musicians are rehearsing or jamming.
Please, if possible, take your shoes off at the door and use slippers (if provided).
We won't stop you from eating meat, enjoying your usual diet; but we appreciate your cooperation, understanding, and solidarity co-existing within a building of vegetarians, pescatarians, vegans, raw food enthusiasts. So we compost: vegetables, fruits, coffee grinds, clean egg shells ONLY). For us, healthy communities, bodies and minds thrive & come alive on fresh living foods. This focus involves being extra mindful of earth resources such as water so please don't ALLOW IT TO RUN DOWN THE DRAIN (by washing one dish at a time for instance). DO rinse out recyclables you bring into the house. And lets not pour grease down the sink either (containers will be provided for this). The watershed across the streets illustrates the story of litter. Profoundly so.
Thank you for listening.
I'm a humble gardener, super/building manager. I enjoy making people happy and supporting artists, scholars, everyday people & other migrating creatures (monarchs, goldfinches, bees and seeds) in their daily efforts to live, work, create and thrive. Sharing meals, conversation, music, fine local liquid libations (such as Great Lakes Beer) and sweet soulful vibrations, is joy simplified and love in action. Expanding my awareness of the natural world means being a great host plant. I can dig it!
