About this listing

A magical 1984 Blue Bird Bus converted into a beautiful rustic tiny home.

The space

Experience a little Alaskan magic by staying in the cozy Blue Bird tiny home. Nestled in the darling 1950’s Nunaka Valley neighborhood, this 1984 Blue Bird Bus (also known as Nellie) has an adventurous story. For over 30 years she ran as a Kenai Fjords tour bus through Denali National Park and a route from Valdez to Seward until she recently retired in 2014. Nellie was picked up and by a sweet little family of 4 in Seward and customized into a beautiful tiny house, where they lived for a year. She is equipped with beautiful reclaimed maple floors, custom wood interior, comfy sofa, full kitchen with dining area, bunk beds, queen master bed, flat screen TV with movies, mini solar shower, and compost toilet. Now Nellie is ready to share her magic with people from all over the world as a B&B. We are thrilled to host your stay, so please make yourself at home.

Guest access

You will have your own private entrance to the bus and have the place to yourselves, reserved parking in the driveway.

Interaction with guests

My husband and I have lived in Anchorage for 7 years. We’ve had many adventures here traveling the state and are active members of the community. We love nothing more than to share what we love about Alaska with visitors. We are happy to help make your trip awesome, so if you need help, just ask:)

Other things to note

The bus is not well insulated, in the summer months it can be very hot, and on a cool day it can be very cool. We have space heater and ample blankets to keep you warm, and fans and a cold shower to cool you off :)

The bus does not have plumbing. But not to worry, you will be well taken care of and get an authentic Alaskan experience here :)

Nellie is an absolute dream and Theresa and Carlyle and absolutely wonderful hosts! I stayed on Nellie for most of a week while on a much needed vacation in Alaska, and it was such a perfect setting for rest and tranquility. The bus is beautifully and thoughtfully decorated with everything you need to be comfortable — so many small touches, from a pitcher of olive oil or freshly ground coffee to eye masks near the bed to ward off the 18hr sun in the summer! It was delightfully cozy and homey in the best of ways. The camp shower and compost toilet are definitely a bit more rustic than you might be used to, but are very usable and much more comfortable than you might expect! And really, Theresa and Carlyle's hospitality and friendliness are what make this place so lovely. They are so willing to answer questions or give advice about things to do and see in the area, and really made me feel welcome. I couldn't have asked for better hosts in Anchorage!

Theresa and Carlyle were such welcoming hosts! They offered some great suggestions for a day trip we had planned and even hooked is up with a few beers and pastries from a local bakery afterwards. Nellie was such a fun place to stay. Small, yet extremely cozy. We had a blast!

The most serene, warm and rustic "tiny house" getaway. Every detail on the bus is lovingly curated - from the hardwood floors, to the throw pillows, tapestries, placemats and butterfly magnets. Theresa and Carlyle were welcoming and gracious hosts. They had warm cookies, coffee, almond and whole milk waiting for me. Their binder is full of excellent recommendations for local eats and small shops. They let me borrow one of their bikes and hit the trails; then, when dear friends road tripping through AK with their dog came to visit, they allowed me to share a night with them on Nellie. It was an unforgettable vacation.

Y'all, Nellie is really cool. Location-wise: nothing was more than a 12 minute slow-city drive away. There is a big grocery store that is within a walkable distance but is a two minute drive (literally) away. Nellie is sitting in the driveway, backed up against a little vegetable garden and some lilacs. She's right in between two houses, but we never heard any noise at all except some cooing chickens in the morning (not roosters!, just clucks-clucks, nice noise) and once we heard a garbage truck. Beyond that, it's completely residential so street noise is almost nonexistent. Comfort-wise: GREAT BED. So cozy, you're in a little bed cave, but airy and light. Perfect for reading and sleeping. In darker months I guess you would need more lighting for two people to read, but in the summer it was no problem. Other amenities are there as needed, paper products, nice soap products, brand-new sponge for dishes. The kitchen was missing a few things but I let Theresa know and I'm sure by the time you're there, those few items will be around. It was very thoughtfully stocked with good olive oil, excellent coffee and lots of spices (loved that!). She's very responsive. While there is no plumbing, there is plenty of drinking water stocked in the bus and the kitchen sink is hooked up to a hose that gives you cold water with the turn of the tap, so you don't have to put on your shoes to go wash the dishes. The stove is (auto lighting) gas so it was very quick to heat up water for washing or drinking. The shower was cold, we added enough stove-warmed water to make it not bad-cold and it was fine for us. Good soap and towels! I read lots of reviews here before picking Nellie for our vacation. Everyone seemed pretty gung-ho about the toilet. In person, I didn't love it so much. I've used compost toilets but have never had to empty one. I didn't realize that I would need to be tying off the bags and taking them out to the trash. On the balance, it was worth the "WHAT!?" factor, to have the cozy and functional space and we wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

Such a one of a kind experience. Just as cute as can be with everything you need! I slept really well (thanks for the sleep mask) and Nellie stayed very comfortable temp-wise with the help of a fan and a heater. Loved!
