The space

The cottage sits on 3/4 acre of land mainly laid to grass though we have big plans to develop into a real garden. There is parking for two guest cars. The house is a converted cottage with two upstairs bedrooms (one for guests) a large sitting room downstairs with open fireplace, for guest use, and kitchen/dining room/family room. The house was built in 1901 and extended in 1991.

We are situated only 30 mins by car to Gougane Barra, 55 mins to Killarney and 40 mins to Cork City and is well placed to explore West Cork and Kerry.

Guests have the use of a sitting room with satellite TV. The bedroom has a double and a single bed so can accommodate a family including one child. Broadband internet access is restricted due to limited satellite broadband, much reliance being placed on the 3G mobile network which can be shared with guests.

The house is more suitable for guests travelling by car due to the rural location. However, we welcome walkers and cyclists and can collect from Macroom, which is well served by buses from Cork, Killarney, Tralee etc, for an extra €8 round trip.

Guest access

Guests have one bedroom containing a single and a double bed. The cottage sitting room is for the use of guests, though, as it is the passageway from the family room to the bedrooms, it is not exclusive. There is satellite TV in the sitting room as well as a piano & guitar (for the musical).

Guests are welcome to cook their meals in the kitchen by arrangement or join us for an evening meal for €7 a head, again by arrangement.

We have a washing machine (€2 per use) & dryer (€2 per use) which guests may make use of.

Interaction with guests

We work from home so we are usually available for help and advice during the day and we enjoy meeting people from all over the world.

The neighbourhood

The neighbourhood is quiet without the noise and bustle of the city. We are 8 km from Macroom town and the nearest shops, 1 km from The Gearagh, a national nature reserve, a very pleasant walk of up to 90 minutes directly from the house.

Getting around

We are 40 minutes by car from Cork city centre and 55 minutes from Killarney or Kenmare. There is an excellent and fast bus service (No 40) from Tralee & Killarney through Macroom to Cork city and all the way to Rosslare. We are also only 2 km from the Danone Nutricia baby nutrition factory.

Other things to note

Enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside. We guarantee that your sleep will not be disturbed by revellers returning from the pub at closing time!

We have two dogs, Casper & Pedro, who are very friendly as well as being child friendly. The bathroom is shared.

Moira was very welcoming! She helped us get to the little town of Macroom. Helped us with information of Ireland for continuing our road trip and made wonderful suggestions. Getting to the home is a drive through country roads and distant from Cork City but worth the stay if you're not wanting to stay in a busy town and would rather enjoy the beautiful country side. Well worth the stay!

Moira and Aine are very welcoming hosts and they go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable. The area is very quiet and the beds so soft, I have not slept that well in years. They were very helpful with any questions and requests we had. I would recommend a stay with them to anyone wanting to explore Ireland
