The space

Part Balinese hut, part gothic cathedral, part art museum… all tropical paradise! Located just off lower Puna’s gorgeous Red Road in the quiet community of Puna Beach Palisades, Hale O Kamakani (House of the Upward Breeze) is unlike any place you’ve ever stayed before. When you climb the impressive staircase and enter through the double doors with their lovely cut glass inlays, you’ll be blown away by the unique design, artful décor, gorgeous wood treatments and fabulous ocean views, with surprises around every corner!

You’ll enter from the front lanai into the great room, which combines the kitchen, dining and sitting areas in that familiar Hawaiian floorplan. Your eye will be drawn immediately to the panoramic view showcased by the large windows throughout the home. Photos don’t come close to doing it justice!

Both bedroom suites and the great room are home to special double doors that can be closed and locked, opened with screens, or roll back the screens and leave the back of the house open to nature, al fresco style. You’ll love the chance to experience our perfect climate without barriers the way so many residents do.

The modern, compact and very well equipped kitchen provides high end appliances, including a gas range, dishwasher and side-by-side fridge with ice maker and water dispenser, as well as a coffee maker, coffee grinder, toaster and deep double sink aid in your culinary endeavors. A full complement of cooking and serving ware are also provided - all you need to bring is the food!

Just beyond the kitchen is a lovely wood dining table with ocean views and seating for 4. On the left side of the great room is an ocean view sitting area. Step out onto the large covered lanai that runs the length of the home, and you’ll find an outdoor dining table, as well as lounge chairs and additional seating. Did we mention there are ocean views from here too?

Hale O Kamakani’s unique floor plan provides excellent privacy. There are two bedroom suites located at opposite ends of the home. Each suite has a quality queen platform bed, ocean view, and those cool doors that can be closed, screened or open, as well as an attached bathroom that is decked out with huge stained glass windows in tropical motifs.

The south suite has a table and chairs and a reading nook. The alcove leading to the bathroom has a dresser and a walk-in closet. The ensuite bathroom has a large tub and hand held shower. The north suite offers a smaller closet and a table with seating. There’s a dresser in the bathroom, along with an elegant pedestal sink and a river rock and tile shower with dual shower heads.

Head back to the great room and climb the stairs to the loft where you’ll find the den, with a large overstuffed couch and TV with satellite service and a DVD player. There’s a great ocean view from up here too – a screen door opens to a small balcony if you really want to take it all in.

Incredible art pieces decorate every corner of the home. Ceiling fans provide air flow in both bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as the loft den. The imported furnishings are exotic and beautiful. Fabulous books abound, on topics such as art, Hawaii and other tropical locations, food, fiction, and more. Don’t forget to check the large armoire in the foyer for a selection of games to keep you entertained on rainy days or into the evening.

The house is a great base for exploring the east side of the Big Island. Kehena black sand beach is at the bottom of a near-by steep incline, where you’ll experience some of the more colorful area residents. An enclave of retired Cirque du Soleil performers live nearby – you’ll often see acrobats, fire dancers, and so on – with or without swim suits ;-) Uncle Robert’s awesome Wednesday Night Market is only a 5 minute drive. The new lava viewing area is less than 10 minutes away by car. Eclectic Pahoa town, with excellent restaurants plus groceries, gas, banks, etc, is a 15 minute drive. Historic Hilo town is about an hour, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a just over an hour’s drive.

When you are ready to feel transported, come and stay at this beautiful and unique home. Hale O Kamakani awaits you!

Would highly recommend this incredibly beautiful home to anyone! Perfect location for exploring the lava fields, black sand beaches and the Hilo/Pahoa area. Very well equipped kitchen, very comfy beds, great showers, and we spent every morning relaxing on the back deck with our coffee overlooking the ocean!

What a wonderful trip! The house is beautiful and had everything we needed for a fantastic vacation - my only regret is that we didn't make time during our busy week to spend more time just relaxing and enjoying the house itself. The neighborhood is quiet and located just off one of the most scenic routes on the island - don't miss the opportunity to drive north past the turn to the house, as there's some incredible scenery there. One caveat for future guests: the same conditions that make for spectacular stargazing at the house (dark nights with low light pollution) can also make for challenging driving conditions after sunset, especially if there's rain or if animals dart into the road. We took the drive slow at night when necessary, pulled over to let local drivers pass, and had no trouble, but it's something to be aware of. Enjoy your stay - this one's a gem!

Response from Hawaii:
Mahalo nui for your thoughtful review, Julian! We are so glad you had a nice visit, and really appreciate your cautionary mention of road conditions :-) As you said, the nights are dark, the roads are narrow, and there are children and animals about. It's very much appreciated when guests key in to this and drive with aloha. We sure hope you'll come back and visit again someday!

You can tell a lot of design went into this home. The theme throughout was artistic and eclectic. Fight for the master suite; the memory foam mattress is very comfortable, and the ensuite bathroom is huge (double shower). Quiet location a very short distance from the where the lava is flowing into the ocean. During a sudden morning downpour all we could hear were raindrops and a neighbor playing songs on a ukulele - very relaxing. One note, the house is in a cell dead zone pocket, you may want to print out the entry instructions beforehand. Once in, Wi-Fi is available.

Staying here was peaceful and lovely. The home was a great size for a family of four adults. The kitchen was definitely stocked with all of the utensils and cookware we ever needed. If you are looking for a place that is located well for exploring the Island, I'd suggest staying on the Kona side to avoid the constant rain and driving distance. If you are planning a long stay here, then be sure to bring all the basics for yourself. The host provides starter sized soap but the rest is up to the guest. The beds were awesome, the showers were comfortable, there were fans in nearly every room making it easy to stay cool however, there weren't any curtains in the bedrooms so a lot of sunlight does come in while you're asleep.

Beautiful home in a great location. Very clean and private, with an excellent ocean breeze. This space would be perfect for two couples. We wish we would have booked it longer.
