Information for guest about Douglas lake
Set against the backdrop of the foothills of the Smoky Mountain, Douglas Lake is a popular recreation for all types of vacationers. The dam that controls the reservoir was built in 1942, stretches 202 feet high and 1,705 feet across the French Broad River. Douglas Lake provides 513 miles of shoreline and 28,420 acres of water surface for recreation activities. In a year with normal rainfall, the water level in Douglas Reservoir varies about 44 feet from summer to winter. Although most of the shoreline along the 43 mile-long lake is private. Amenities include restrooms with showers, picnic areas with tables, a boat ramp and a swimming beach.
Birdwatching: From late July to early October, birdwatchers will witness the fall migration of shore birds, wading birds, and other waterfowl that flock to Douglas Lake. The birds rest and feed on the muddy shoreline and in areas of shallow water exposed as the level of the reservoir is lowered to winter flood control levels.
Fishing: Nourished by three rivers, Douglas Lake has become the premier crappie lake in East Tennessee. Other good fishing includes: white bass, sauger, black crappie, striped bass, spotted bass, walleye, blue cat, flat head catfish, channel catfish, red horse, red breast sunfish and bluegill. Fishing is a year round sport at Douglas although spring and fall are the preferred seasons. From November to May, the wide shallow embayment, fertile creek hollows and stump beds, attract the crappie in huge numbers during the spring spawning season making crappie fishing excellent! Spring is the best time for bass fishing but you'll find there's good stock year-round.
Trails: If you want to add a hiking adventure to your time at the lake, the trailhead to the Trotter Bluff Small Wild Area (trail map) is adjacent to the Douglas Dam Headwater Campground. Hike the almost 2 miles of trail that winds through 30 acres of hardwood forest and limestone sinkholes to an overlook of the lake's tailwaters. Springtime hikes are enhanced with colorful wildflowers that dot the landscape. The Dandridge Partnership Trail is a 1.2 mile out-and back that winds through wooded terrain (trail map).
**Douglas Lake is a seasonal lake regulated by the TVA. There will always be water in the main channel however, during certain times of the year there will not be a lot of water at our shoreline. The TVA starts to fill the lake over Memorial Day and it is usually full by the end of May.. The TVA then starts to empty the lake after Labor Day and by the end of September, there is not a lot of water at our shoreline but there is still water in the main channel and you can drop your boat at one of the marinas on the main channel.

The time we spent on the deck with the views was the highlight. If you're going to cook in the house bring your own skillets, the ones they have there are worn out Teflon that should have been thrown out. The beds were sagging, and the linens are worn out. The sheets have those lint pellets on them. Bring your own sheets. But overall it was a nice weekend, close to boat rentals on the lake.

I can not recommend Susan's Mountain Splendor cabin enough. It was super peaceful to sit on the porch and drink coffee in the morning while looking at the mountains. It was nice and quite away form busy streets while still having the luxury of being close enough to all the major attractions. Susan was very helpful with tips and directions to different destinations. The cabin is comfy and welcoming and the hot tub is perfect to unwind in after a long hike in the mountains.

We were very happy with the cabin and the quality of the accommodations. I will say, Susan's communications and request for an extra (non AIRBNB) cleaning deposit was a surprise and I called AIRBNB and made sure it was not required. I understand her needs, but she needs to abide by her contract if she wants to use them. Otherwise, the stay was great.

Mountain Splendor was an amazing cabin. It was everything a cabin should be. The decor alone kept me busy looking at everything. Loved sitting in the rockers gazing at the fantastic view of the mountains. Susan was so patient with all my questions and very helpful with extra info to help make my stay easy. I would definitely stay here again!!

The cabin was incredibly cozy and exactly what we were looking for. The views from the cabin were astounding, and we loved the hot tub! We got a little lost finding the cabin despite receiving directions (completely our fault), and when we called Susan she was very kind and patient. The place was just secluded enough to be a private getaway, but close to grocery stores to get food and to go on hikes in the Smokeys. We came here for spring break and it was definitely a consensus that we wouldn't have been happier anywhere else!

My wife and I had a great time visiting Susan's cabin. The cabin itself is great. It's located a fair distance from the noise of neighboring cities, providing a quite escape. We enjoyed sitting in the porch rocking chairs drinking coffee while taking in the beautiful views. Susan was clear and helpful throughout our stay. We had no issues and stay at Susan's cabin again.
