About this listing

This 3 bedroom farmhouse offers truly unique accommodation on Ometepe. Each room has private en-suite bathroom and huge private veranda with hammocks, dining and reading chairs all set amid the spectacular setting of our working farm, the cloud forests and volcanoes. Breakfast is cooked freshly for you each morning in the communal kitchen.

The space

Remote, very peaceful, beautiful and interesting with good views and set amid our working farm. We have a great farm walk and are well located for activities and local amenities and we can set up guides easily for you straight from the house.

Guest access

Walks around the farm, kayaking, fishing, hiking, cycling, local culture, organic food from the farm.

Interaction with guests

The owner lives on site. Farm workers can be seen on site throughout the day. We provide a telephone with free food delivery at the house.

Other things to note

This is a partially off grid solar house. While we have scaled the solar system to be sufficient for "normal" usage, but when the sun doesn't shine we can move to mains power. We use organic toilets and the showers are fresh mineral volcanic water, straight from the volcanic springs. They are refreshing.
If you don't have transport in mind it's a fair walk to get here. We suggest a pick up from our restaurant Cafe Campestre in Balgue.
We have an Honesty Bar in the house and provide free delivery from our restaurant to the house.
There are courtesy bicycles available for guest use.
We have 4 dogs, they are gentle and very friendly. We also have pigs.

This was a wonderful experience. Ben is a great host. He is kind and generous and extremely helpful. The guesthouse is set on his lovely farm. I spent lots of time on the veranda looking out at the lake, reading and writing int he hammock. Ben cooked great breakfasts every morning. The location was convenient to jump on a bike and get to lots of places on Ometepe and not too far a walk from his lovely cafe.

Weeks before we even got to Nicaragua, Ben was already making connections for us with shuttles and taxis and hikes that would end up making the trip so much better. The farm is as described, it's a well thought-out, efficient, permaculture farm with beautiful buildings and yards that are maintained by Ben and his friendly, local staff. Ben is a true chef and takes tangible pride in the results of his efforts in the kitchen at his house as well as at his restaurant down the road (which is a busy spot, visited by tourist and locals alike). Ben is very careful to source basically all his ingredients for his food from Ometepe (or at least Nicaragua) and quite often from his own farm. He works with local ingredients produced by small, family run farms that make a living solely from the production of these small farms. The result of this is meat that is different from something you would have in the UK or North America. The meat is WAY leaner because of the nature of their grazing lands (it's dry here a lot of the time, the grass isn't as nutrient-rich) and the lack of the drugs and processed feeds we use in other parts of the world. Ben and his staff make amazing food while supporting the community. Enjoy the local tastes, thats why you're travelling! Our time at Casa Bosque was made better by the fact that Ben is well travelled and a great conversationalist and we really enjoyed learning more about Nicaragua and his type of farming and hearing some of his many travel stories. Ben connected us with a friend of his for a hike up the smaller of the two volcanos; he was fantastic. The weather was only ok for our hike and we still had a great time because our guide was so attentive and friendly. Jut ask Ben to connect you. One thing that we let slip while in Nicaragua was always being attentive to where you leave your things and what you leave where. We had a few things stolen while traveling around the island . We can't stress enough; there is absolutely no reason to be overly fearful of robberies in Nicaragua (as so many North Americans seem to believe) but don't be naive. You wouldn't leave your things unattended and unlocked while in Disney Land so why do it on Ometepe. Make good decisions people... we didn't. After we lost our passports and camera and a few other incidentals, Ben bent over backwards to connect us with the people that could help us get to the consulate (not an easy thing to find if you don't know the city of Managua; no street signs) and made sure we were set and had calmed down from the shock of realizing our passports were gone. He was a great host and we would go back in an instant. The highlight for us was just sitting, eating breakfast and chatting away....

Originally from the UK I came visiting Nicaragua 15 years ago and never left. Ometepe is an amazing place and a lifestyle change beckoned. The farm, guesthouse and restaurant are life long passions being fulfilled offering the opportunity to live off grid, sustainably and organically. Sharing this passion with others and learning from the locals are what continue making this lifestyle so worthwhile.
