The neighbouring rainforest gives visitors ample opportunity for hiking, bird-watching or exploring the tropical flora and fauna with a local guide. An impressive coral reef just metres from the beach allows even inexperienced snorkelers to come face-to-face with majestic angelfish, sea turtles and the friendly stingrays that frequent the bay each afternoon.

Castara is beautiful and the cottage is Well situated so you Can reach both beaches. The problem was the bathroom which was dirty. We were told that someone would come and clean on our third day. No one came so We had the same towls, bedsheets and kitchen cloth all 5 days. The mosquito net was totalt broken so We Got so many bug bites. The House is open so you cant just close the door. Carolyn was helpfull but she was alway in A hurry so We had to ask the locals. The people in Castara are so kind. We will go to Castara again but in another place.

Response from Yvonne:
The apartment was cleaned on the day the guests arrived, but within 2 days, was described as being "in a state", with sand & mud throughout. They had been advised about using the outside shower - but chose to wash the heavy dirt & sand from their bodies in the bathroom, thereby blocking the drains. They ignored the "No Smoking" request & left butt-ends for others to remove. From day one, the guests said how happy they were (saying : "we love it here" ) & did not make one complaint - until their request for a refund was refused. They had to leave one day early as their flight/ferry had not been confirmed - no fault of ours. The happy tone turned to anger as she warned us about posting an adverse review. I suspect a refund would have resulted in a different outcome.

Nice week in Castara. The place is in a great location between two roads which lead to two separate wonderful beaches within a couple minutes walk.

Castara is not a resort full of hotels but a working fishing village that is also set up for tourism. There are a couple of beach bars, plenty of restaurants of all levels, mini-markets for provisions etc. The beaches are beautiful although when we were there, they were having an usually large swell so the lifeguards had red flags up on several days. We hired a car for two days which enabled us to see most of the island and concluded we were staying the right place. The local shops can supply most of what you need - we managed perfectly well (although we had brought ground coffee with us - almost impossible to find even in the supermarket in Canaan) without a car for most of the 2 weeks. You can get UHT milk, orange juice, butter, frozen chicken and frozen bacon, limited tinned goods, rice and pasta, eggs, fresh fruit and vegetables in the shops in Castara. Veg is best from Bingi's on the corner of the road above the apartment. Veg from the vendor near to the fishermen was of variable quality. You can get fish from the fishermen but you have to catch them at the right time and when they have fish of the right size it seems - we asked for some but although they had fish they did not want to sell it to us as it was large and they wanted to sell it whole to restaurants I guess. Also you have to ask - if you just stand there they will assume you are just looking and not wanting to buy. You can buy cold beers from the big supermarket by the beach (and open them using the opener at the doorway as you leave!). Wallaces bar next to the apartment also sells beer, rum and even has wine. Wine is expensive and hard to come by generally but you can get wine boxes off him. The best food we ate was at Castara Retreats in terms of quality but we also had great food at D'almond Tree (behind the main beach) and at Cas Creole. We found the Boathouse expensive for what it was and also its very cliquey down there so we mostly stayed on the big bay. If we come back to Tobago we will definitely stay in Castara again. The Tamarind apartment is the middle one and is the best of the 3 as far as we could tell. When we were there there was no-one else in the other two but as its a wooden house I think it would have been quite noisy and intimate had there been. Its adequately equipped and sheets and towels are changed every 3 or 4 days. The deck area is a lovely place to sit or swing in the hammock. The whole apartment is open to the air so bring mosquito spray. The mosquito net on the bed does not prevent them getting to you in the night! We...

We had a great stay at Castara Cottages. The house it is just a minute walk away from the beach and close to all amenities and is beautifully and colourfully designed. We didn't have the chance to meet Yvonne but her friends Ann and Carolyn were easy to communicate with, very helpful and welcoming. I would definitely recommend Castara Cottages to anyone who is looking for a hassle free and comfortable stay in Castara, Tobago.
