Description

The space

The gypsy wagon is a tiny, perfect space in which to spend some quality time. It sits in its own spot in an English country garden at the foot of the North Wessex Downs, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Polly, who runs horse-drawn gypsy wagon holidays, lives in and works from the cottage and welcomes wagon guests and their dogs. She has three small dogs and a cat and there are sometimes horses in the garden!

Guest access

The wagon and its surroundings are your space, the garden is sometimes shared with two other wagons which people taking horse drawn holidays use and with the family (Polly, the dogs Bobbin, Button and Maudie, the cat Bumble and sometimes the horses Ned and Blackthorn).

Interaction with guests

Usually Polly or Jezz will be available to greet you, but sometimes we just let you get on with it! We are usually available to answer questions and point the way to great walks, pubs, shopping and sights, such as Avebury and Stonehenge.

The neighbourhood

The wagon is 6 miles from Avebury stone circle and 16 miles from Stonehenge. It is at the epicentre of crop circle activity and there are lots of quiet lanes for walking, riding and cycling. It is situated at the foot of the North Wessex Downs, one of the best preserved chalk downlands left in the world, in spring and summer a wonderful world of flowers!

Getting around

There is an occasional bus to Alton Priors, but you will be much happier with a car or a bike!

Other things to note

Wagon guests use the main family bathroom inside the house with toilet, bath and sink. There is no bathroom in the wagon.

The wagon was a welcome refuge from the storms during our cycle from Reading to Bristol on the Kennet and Avon canal. Polly was extremely welcoming and after two hot baths we felt whole again. The wagon is extremely comfortable and romantic with all the amenities required for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. It was so peaceful and quiet, a true haven.

Staying in the gypsy caravan at Alton Priors is an unforgettable experience, for all the right reasons. The accommodation itself is unique, homely and in one of the most beautiful and interesting locations in England. Sarah was actually on holidays when I was there but her business partner Polly is absolutely wonderful and made me feel very welcome. I fully recommend this brilliant Airbnb and I hope to visit again some day myself!

Sarah was an incredibly kind host - I booked to stay and then got ill before coming - so without batting an eyelid Sarah generously said I could come another time. That kind of flexibility goes a long way in my book and I can't wait to stay in the wagon!

Idyllic setting in a lovely large garden. The caravan was well equipped and very cosy and we slept well. Good food and coffee provided for our breakfast which we prepared on the little stove. Both Sarah and Polly were super-friendly and I wanted to take the dogs home with us! The bathroom in the house had a bath but no shower, not a problem at all for us and overall all very relaxed and friendly. A lovely short walk to the Barge inn for food and drinks or we could have grilled on the well equipped fire. I highly recommend the experience.

Upon arrival my girlfriend and I were a little nervous about staying in the wagon, but once we lit some candles it got really comfortable and warm, and romantic. It was a clean space with a warm bed and very cozy. Sarah and Jezz were super accommodating and were quick to respond with any questions. Would definitely do it again, but hopefully next time with no rain so we can enjoy a fire.

Yes, it's best to arrive at the wagon and get settled in before dark.
