House rules
This place isn’t suitable for infants (0–2 yrs) and the host doesn’t allow pets, parties, or smoking.
Cerniog is a recently converted stone barn set in the tranquil Cambrian Mountains of Mid-Wales. Access is from a lane and then a track through peaceful farmland. A river tumbles through the garden.
Included is a traditional cooked breakfast using, where possible, locally grown produce. Simple continental style if preferred.
We have one large comfortable guest room, looking out over peaceful fields, with en-suite shower room.

The space
Cerniog is surrounded by peaceful farmland and a river runs through the wild garden providing a very tranquil setting. Most of the garden is still in the process of being created after all the conversion work and is a perfect haven for wildlife. We have developed an area of garden for growing vegetables, herbs and fruit bushes which give us fresh produce.
The barn, probably dating from the late 17 hundreds, nestles 300 metres above sea level and, within a short walk, has wide views over exquisite countryside. We regularly see more unusual wildlife here.
We have converted the barn, mostly by ourselves, to be comfortable and energy-efficient with "Eco" Ground Source heating and plenty of insulation to keep us warm. A wood-burner provides any extra winter time warmth.

Guest access
The private bedroom is large, light, and comfortable, with en-suite shower room. It has twin beds, (which together make up a comfy king size) as well as a double sofa bed, for families.
There is a well-stocked tea trolley – we'll also make you a cuppa when you arrive, if you like, so you can relax after your travels.
Access is through the front door, up stairs & turn left.
Meals are taken in our large Kitchen / Diner.
We leave your room alone, unless it's absolutely necessary to go in, so please ask if you want beds making etc.

Other things to note
Covid 19 specific- During the current pandemic we are limiting stays to weekends only (Friday to Sunday) with a two night minimum booking. This is to assure both guests and ourselves of maximum safety. We have a detailed safety procedure which we will provide on request.
The track to the barn can seem longer than it really is and is not tarmacked. We are near hundreds of acres of Common Land - stout waterproof walking boots (or wellies) necessary, especially in wetter months!
The barn is surrounded by fields, with sheep around the barn, generally, and horses and cattle in nearby fields.
Sorry but we can't take dogs.
We are a non-smoking household.
Guests are welcome to explore our garden, such as it is (a work in progress!), but note that this is at your own risk. There are still building materials around and piles of rocks (ready for wall building). Some areas are steep and could be slippery.
Our water comes from a borehole in the back garden. No chlorine or fluoride etc. Recently upgraded to include top-quality filtering and sterilisation.
Although we have 3 cats here they are semi-feral and live permanently outdoors. In 2012 a very sad looking cat was found eating rice from the bird table so we gave her some more appropriate food - and she's been here ever since (still quite feral). The next summer she emerged from the woodpile with 2 kittens!

Cerniog is at the end of a track, through 2 gates (*please leave gates as you find them*), about a mile from the village of Carno. There is no road noise, no street lights to obscure the stars, just animals grazing peacefully in the fields nearby. (We do get some low-flying training jets during the day, which can be a surprise.)
We are very rural, surrounded by fields and, usually, sheep.
Carno was the home of Laura Ashley, the Welsh designer of textiles, clothing, and home furnishings and the manufacturing buildings are still there although largely now used by other businesses.
There is a pub in the village, as well as the Clwb - a locals special hostelry! There is the ubiquitous church, built in 1867, and a recently re-built primary school. Much of the land around is farmland, mainly sheep grazed.

We are a relatively recently married couple in our mid 50s/ early 60s with several grown-up children spread around the world doing their own thing. We moved up here into the Welsh hills after living in Cornwall for several years. Even though we love Cornwall, we wanted to escape the endlessly busy tourism and find somewhere peaceful to build our own home. Roger has been a builder (among other trades) and has lovingly converted this beautiful old barn into a spacious, three bedroom house with part-time help from his wife Bee (Bridget). We are now ready to welcome guests into our home. Bridget has worked at a small special school for 8 years now, to support the build. Being a practical person she has enjoyed being part of it all whenever possible. She speaks fluent German and some French. She teaches cooking and life-skills to young people and is used to catering for large numbers and for people with special dietary needs. She loves gardening, wine-making, crafts and music and will shortly be turning these interests into weekend mini-retreats. Roger has very many interests and loves African drumming, dowsing and walking, which will also be turned into workshops at Cerniog in the near future. We both love the idea of meeting new people from anywhere in the world and will give you a warm welcome. If you are looking for somewhere relaxing, quiet and a bit different to the norm, away from the noise and stresses of city life, look no further, you have found it!
