About this listing

Montinho is a fully renovated farm cottage with two double bedrooms and bathrooms, open-plan fully equipped kitchen and eating and sitting areas. It is situated in 60 acres of pastures, oak forest, organic orchard and olive grove.

The space

Montinho is a luxurious farm cottage surrounded by nature on a 25 hectare farm, with organic olive groves, pastures and oak forest, run by Peter and Rosemary Eden, who have been here for more than 25 years. They produce olive oil and also have a black sheep flock, a horse, donkey and mule which graze around freely. Wildflowers, butterflies and varied birdlife abound. This is a paradise for walkers, mountain bikers, bird-watchers and explorers. From the farm, there are views of the medieval fortified village of Marvão, perched upon its craggy hill-top.

Montinho Cottage has 2 comfortable double bedrooms with bathrooms, open-plan fully equipped kitchen and eating and sitting areas with log burner, and shady patio with barbecue. Montinho combines comfort and a charming rustic Alentejo style. Outside there is a large saline swimming pool (shared with Moita Raza) with green lawns and garden, and many peaceful corners to read a book and dine al-fresco.
- The main bedroom is furnished with hand-painted pine furniture and has a very comfortable double bed and ensuite bathroom. Double doors open onto a private patio with stunning views of Vale de Rodão and Marvão castle.
-The twin bedroom features red Alentejana hand-painted furniture, a separate bathroom with a Raindance shower.
-There is space for an additional bed if needed and cots are available.

A complimentary welcome pack is provided on arrival including a bottle of local wine, freshly baked bread, fresh fruit and home grown organic olive oil. Firewood is provided in the winter and there is full central heating.
Montinho has wireless internet and a dvd player. There is no TV so that guests can focus on soaking up the sun, the scenery and the fresh air of the Natural Park.
There are mountain bicycles for guests to explore the local quiet roads and tracks and excellent riding stables close by.
We provide maps for walking in the hills with instructions for some of the
local tracks, as well as advice about the best places for birdwatching.
Marvão and Castelo de Vide, both 5km, have various restaurants and cafes,
and there is a Pingo Doce supermarket in Castelo de Vide.
The nearest airport is Lisbon, a 2 hour drive on good roads to
Castelo de Vide.

We had a wonderful stay in the cottage. The accommodation is perfect and the pool is fantastic. My children (5 and 3) loved playing in the garden while myself and my wife watched on, with Marvao Castle sitting as the backdrop. Collecting the fallen apples to feed the horses in the back field was a particular favourite eveming activity. The cottage is close to Castelo De Vide, Portagem and of course Marvao. There are playgrounds in both Castelo De Vide and Portagem not to mention other pool options. It's a great option. Peter is a gentleman always around when you need him but completely discreet. A lovely place to stay and lively hosts. You will not be disappointed.

This is a wonderful retreat as it's in the middle of nowhere so incredibly peaceful. The house is spacious and impeccably clean. The fruit, butter, bread, milk and general cooking supplements were much appreciated. It is close to marvao and the Spanish border. We loved it

Peter and Rosemary were excellent hosts and made us feel very welcome. We loved the cottage and garden - it was well equipped, clean, comfortable, spacious and very attractively furnished. The local walking paths are well marked and there are plenty of interesting villages and towns to visit nearby. Lots of local eating places serving traditional food and wine at very reasonable prices. A very beautiful and peaceful area to explore, especially on foot. Bring your binoculars to spot lots of spectacular birds. We had a marvellous week and would love to visit again soon.

Peter & Rosemary welcomed us and were most gracious hosts, available to help as well as respecting our privacy. They provided us with welcoming goodies in the fridge. Peter helped us with route planning for our bicycling forays. The house is well equipped in every way.

It's the perfect place to find some peace and quiet. The smell of the countryside brings you back 120 years in time. Better see it yourself and enjoy the view from the swimmingly pool.

Peter and Rosemary gave me a warm welcome. I spent a few days in their comfortable cottage. The place is really remote, but very beautiful. Rosemary had made a welcoming pack for me, with, among other things, milk, butter, jam, oranges. I watched Peter teach his very eager border colly how to work in sheepdog trials - and watched on Peters computer how the Dutch beat the English once more at Wembley Stadium. A place to remember!

Peter and Rosemary have been farming sheep and olives in the Alentejo for more than 25 years. We have a rural tourism business and are involved in Nature Conservation in the Natural Park. They enjoy the sunny Portuguese weather, the very special nearby towns of Marvão and Castelo de Vide, and delicious local produced food and wines. Marvão is very scenic and a wonderful area for exploring by foot or bike or by car. Its fun to cross the nearby border and enjoy the Spanish culture and tapas!
