Find economical luxury for long or short stays in our bright, beautifully furnished 1-bedroom apartment in the Irvington Historic District, close to the NE Broadway shopping and dining area, and well served by Tri-Met transit. You'll like the new construction, modern appliances, super comfy beds, two TVs and high speed WIFI. The unit is a separate space giving you total privacy, with no air circulation to the main house and a private entrance directly from the street.

The space
We offer a delightful stay in our 750 square foot, one-bedroom, one-bath apartment, in the ground floor of our home with many spa-like, deluxe touches. We follow all AirBnB and CDC guidelines for cleaning the unit between guests, so you can book in confidence. This is all new construction with modern appliances, quality furnishings, fully equipped kitchen and extra comfy beds: A California King bed in the bedroom and a queen-size "comfort sleeper" sofa in the open plan living area. The comfort sleeper sofa is a deluxe offering unlike conventional "sofa beds", making for a spacious accommodation in the unit for up to four people.

In the open plan living area you have a dining table seating 6 so you can entertain friends, plus a fully equipped kitchen with Keurig coffee maker and a selection of K-Cups. To watch the 55" curved screen TV in the living room you can lounge on the "comfort sleeper" sofa or in one of the comfortable chairs. For your convenience there is a washer and dryer as well as an ironing board and iron.

Of course we provide high-speed WiFi throughout the unit (with a highly reliable "whole-house mesh system" with multiple points of connection) as well as Comcast cable with many of your favorite channels on both of the TVs. A desk provides a convenient workplace for the business traveler and a surge-protected power strip for your electronic gear.

While not fully ADA compliant, the unit is mobility friendly with the main entrance at sidewalk level and just three steps down into the main living space. The tiled, walk-in shower has a fold-down seat and grab bars for extra comfort and stability. Our place is good for couples, solo adventurers, and business travelers. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept pets.

We urge you to read our many glowing reviews. Our guests have loved staying in the Quiet Retreat, and you will too.

Where you’ll be

Portland, Oregon, United States

The unit is in the Irvington Historic District, Oregon's largest historic district, and a treasure trove of lovely historic homes and lush gardens along tree-lined streets that are perfect for strolling or biking. Just two blocks away is the NE Broadway commercial area with its many restaurants, shops, and services. Supermarkets, convenience stores, and one of Portland's best bakeries are near at hand. Our "house manual" lists over 30 restaurants within walking distance. Downtown Portland and its many attractions are 15 minutes by car and convenient by TriMet bus or Light Rail.

Jim Heuer and Robert Mercer from Portland, OR. Jim owns a software company; Robert is a recently retired administrator from Portland State University. We are interested in architectural history, English literature, and railroading, not necessarily in that order. We love Portland and are happy we can share our city with our guests. We also are frequent travelers, and look forward to our trips to foreign countries. We are happy to assist our guests with advice and suggestions about what to see and what to do here in Portland. But we have provided lots of information in our House Book, and are just as happy to let our guests explore and discover the City on their own.

During your stay

We live in the house above the apartment and can respond quickly to any issue that might arise, but will not intrude on your space. We provide guidebooks and maps for the area in the apartment, and are happy to assist with directions and advice on local dining and attractions. Our co-hosts and property managers Malika and Ian are also on hand to assist if we are unavailable. With our self-check-in and completely separate entrance from the street, you can meet all "social distancing" requirement of the current health crisis. Should we have occasion to meet in person, we will be wearing masks, and ask that you do as well.
