Sunny room in the center of Salvador with two beds: one double and one single. Sleeps up to 3 people. Located in the historic neighborhood of 2 de Julho, close to the Pelourinho. I am Brazilian and my son has dual citizenship: Brazil and United States.

The space

The photos of this room are a bit out of date, the sofa bed has been removed and now there is a real double bed with a comfortable mattress. The room also received a fresh coat of paint and the soundproofing has been improved. The room is at the front of the house, which means it is a bit noisier but has more windows. The room now has two mosquito nets.

Are you coming to Salvador for a week or two and need a place to stay? Want to avoid the chaos of Pelourinho and the high costs of Barra? Interested in staying with a family?

Well, why don't you come stay with me and my son! Dois de Julho is an historic neighborhood located about 15 minutes walk from Pelourinho, right in the center of the city. We are renting out our guest room, which is on the first floor and has a bathroom right next door. The location is ideal for anyone wanting to take classes at the Escola de Dança in Pelourinho or train Capoeira in Pelouinho or at FICA or ACANNE, both of which are located here in Dois de Julho.

Here at our house you would have access to our kitchen and living/dining room. We have a washing machine, we charge R$5 a load to wash clothing, which then can be hung on the line to dry. We have wireless internet in-house, and a computer available if you don't have a wireless device. Suitable for a couple (it's a double bed). We are not located on the beach, the closest beach is in Barra, which is a short bus/cab ride away. Smokers OK but you have to smoke outside on the patio!

If you have any questions please feel free to ask!

Guest access

Guests have access to the downstairs of the house, which includes the kitchen, dining/living room, and patio, as well as the two rooms we rent out.

Interaction with guests

Since we live in the house, we interact a fair amount with our guests. It's a great opportunity for my son to practice his English, and we enjoy getting to know travelers from all over the world. However, we don't generally make big meals that we can share with our guests, and our bedrooms are upstairs, which often leaves the downstairs free for our guests.

Other things to note

We are not located on the beach, the closest beach is in Barra, which is a short bus/cab ride away.

Nice family and home with all necessary amenities. General noise from the street was a little intrusive (as there were no double glazed glass windows - this is common throughout the area), but ultimately not a problem. Would recommend.

Mark and his family were very nice and made us feel welcome. They let us have the run of the house and gave my daughter and I some books for the next leg of our trip. Mark also let us cook using their food on the first night (which we replaced) as we arrived on a Sunday when many things are closed. The house is very clean inside and the beds were comfortable. Wifi was also good. Its easy distance to everywhere that you want to see in Salvador and there is a taxi rank at the end of the street and these are cheap in this city so you can get anywhere relatively cheaply and easily. The downside to this room is that it is a little noisy as on the street side but it did not prevent us from sleeping. The room also cannot really be ventilated with fresh air as they have placed foam in the them to lessen the noise, however, for a longer stay I am sure they could be removed.

Mark's house was really nice. Our room was clean and comfortable with a powerful fan which kept us cool at night. The whole family was friendly and helped us when we needed it. He gave us points as to where to go and where not to go in order to keep safe. Great place to stay, thank you :)

I had a nice time staying at Mark's apartment. He's a great host, very helpful and the room is just like in the pictures. It's clean and quite spacious, but as it is front-facing, it can be quite noisy at times. The apartment is located a good 10 mins walk from the historic centre, making it perfect for everyone who's looking to experience life in an authentic neighbourhood that is off the beaten track.

Mark was a great host and he has a lovely house in a really cool neighbourhood. Arranged a taxi for us from the airport that turned out much cheaper than it would have been if we'd organised it. Gave us some useful advice about safety and the area when we arrived and then answered all our questions throughout our stay. There were lots of shops, bars and a fruit market very near the place. Was about a 25 min walk from historical centre and less than 10 reais taxi back at night time. Felt safe in the neighbourhood and there was a fun atmosphere especially at the weekend. Really close to the museau de Arte moderne where there was some great jazz on the Saturday night. Biggest issue with the place would be that it was quite noisy, though it didn't cause a problem with us and our impression of Salvador is that the whole place is full of noise so you just need to try and enjoy it! The room itself was bigger than it looks from the photos and very comfortable. The rest of the house is also very nice and is filled with some really cool art that mark did himself. His wife and kid were also very nice.

Mark's family are friendly. Location is close to old city and easy to access public bus. Shower was not really the hot water when we stay but as Salvador is quite hot(if no rainy) so there are not a big problem.

Response from Evani:
Thank you for your review. The noise issue is well documented in the listing and the commentaries. Bugs? We live in the tropics. It's either bugs or lots of toxic chemicals, I'll take the bugs.

I was born here in Salvador and wouldn't trade it for any place in the world. I am Baiana heart and soul, I love the city, the music, Carnaval, everything! I work at home and I love to cook. If you are interested I can teach you to make muqueca!
