The most striking thing about this lovely traditional Cretian house is the amazing mountain view. The property is secluded and very private, although pool is shared with upstairs. It's a 5 min walk down the hill to 4 or 5 local tavernas and a small shop. The house itself is really spacious with a lovely south facing veranda that basks in the sun all day. The pool is set back towards the entrance path so not one you can watch from the comfort of the house, but it's private with a lockable door to keep little ones in or out. We didn't meet George the host and only briefly his father on the first day, but all our questions were impecibly answered with speed. We spent most of the days out in the surrounding West of Crete sites from which this place is ideally suited. The enchanting Hania, hilltop villages, beaches of Elafonisi, Balos and Falasarnia, plus the delightful lake Kournas. Aptera is also a lovely typical Cretian village with the ancient city only 2 mins drive up the hill and the main National road only 7 or 8 mins drive away. A fantastic house if you're looking for peace and quiet with amenities not too far away. We had a perfect week here.

George was quick to get back to us when we had problems finding his place, and even helped us plan the remainder of our time in Crete. His home is stunning, with a wonderful pool, incredible view, and tons of space for a family of 4. The village is a 5 minute walk down the road, and had plenty of nice restaurants, coffee options for the morning, and a mini market-- we met some wonderful and welcoming people here!

The ground floor flat was everything we hoped for. We were only two people but there would be plenty of room for 4 - the flat is very spacious. Particularly lovely was the long patio with a view of the White Mountains and a choice of lounging in the shade or the sun - also a great place to eat meals. Stelios (George's father) met us on arrival and made us very welcome. He had provided a very generous welcome pack of goodies including his own wine and olive oil and a good starter pack of provisions. Aptera is a very mellow and quiet village with three or four good tavernas where you can eat well and cheaply (we ate at both Cretan Corner and Ta Aptera and can recommend both). There are good beaches a short drive away (having a car is pretty essential if you want to explore). We mainly visited a beach just to the west of Kalyves (turning left a little before the filling station on the road from Kalami signposted GK beach cafe/restaurant, which was actually a pleasant place for a drink or snack). Other, more picturesque, beaches were at Falassarna and Stavros but there is plenty of choice. There are good food shops in Kalyves (great fruit and veg and a good butcher). We had a really wonderful and relaxed holiday and really appreciated the care taken by George and his father to make us comfortable.

The Botonaki family made us so very welcome - they could not have been kinder, we could not have asked for anything more. The accommodation was spacious, clean, traditional and perfect for us - it was an absolute pleasure to stay in Goerge's family home. Spectacular views and a wonderful pool. The villa, village and location made it a perfect holiday. George's father was there every day if we needed him and Charlotte who lived nearby was a great help and friend. The village is unspoilt and delightful with a couple of great tavernas and a really good shop. 10 minutes walk up the hill were some wonderful ruins, a Turkish fortress and an amazing amphitheatre. Crete is a beautiful island and this accommodation and family who own it were a real treasure. We are missing Anna-Malai so much. We hope to visit again soon. The Finch Family 14th-28th August .

We could not have received a warmer welcome from George and his family - such genuine, friendly people. The welcome basket and thoughtfully stocked fridge and cupboard were a very generous gesture. The photos are truly representative of this beautiful traditional villa. From the verandah and the pool, the views of the White Mountains are breeathtaking. We enjoyed lazing by the pool, which is surrounded with trees, bushes and flowers, listening to the cicadas and chatting to Stelios, his brother, George and Charlotte. The villa is a stone's throw from ancient Aptera and ideally located for many other local attractions such as the stunning Botanical Gardens, Miloi Gorge and Lake Kournas. The tavernas are walking distance from the villa and serve a super range of food, including fresh fish.

George was very attentive via phone and email to make sure we were kept informed. The property exceeded our expectation. It is in a quiet location, an easy walk from the shop and tavernas, and is just as beautiful as the photos. For a more poetic description search online for Ethical Traveller - When in Crete. You would need a car to make the most of your holiday. If you hire one at the airport please follow George's instructions about how to get to the villa - the signposting is not good. We spent our time walking in the mountains of Western Crete, but there were good beaches nearby. The swimming pool at Anna Malai is beautiful, but we were not brave enough to use it in April!
