5 - Natural Reserves
Rocha do Navio Natural Reserve
Located in the municipality of Santana, on the north coast of the island of Madeira, the Rocha do Navio Nature Reserve was created with the aim of protecting the natural legacy of this coastal area. It emerged in 1997, driven by the will of the local population to conserve the impressive diversity of marine fauna that this space hosts. This Reserve, delimited between Ponta de São Jorge and Ponta do Clérigo, comprises a total area of 1710 hectares. Being exclusively marine, the Rocha do Navio Natural Reserve covers the seabed up to 100 meters and the islets of Rocha das Vinhas and Viúva. Thus, the conservation of fisheries and maritime resources is an undeniable priority here. When accessing this area, through the Rocha do Navio Viewpoint, by a path or by cable car, you will then have the opportunity to quietly contemplate this natural setting of great charm. In the flora, the endemic species that embellish the cliffs stand out. In addition, this space houses a potential habitat for the monk seal (Monachus monachus), known as the sea lion. Framed by the immensity of the Atlantic Ocean, the landscapes that can be accessed in the Rocha do Navio Nature Reserve are punctuated by the vibrant presence of life that multiplies and preserves itself here in the wild.
6 - Parks and gardens:
The Madeira Theme Park combines the didactic aspect with an entertainment aspect for the whole family, where you will be invited to learn about the history, traditions and customs of the Madeiran people. Located in Santana, the Park has a wide cultural offer that includes visits such as the Santana Typical Houses, Quintinha, the Fantastic Trip and the Junior Pavilion.
Madeira and wicker embroidery, as well as a traditional grocery store and an old kitchen with a wood-burning oven where the typical bread of Santana is made. At Quintinha, you can interact with various animals and rural activities that were once part of the daily lives of the people of Madeira. The extensive garden, which combines species of Madeira's endemic flora, the replica of the Monte train and a relaxing walk on the lake are also attractions that make the Madeira Theme Park a must-visit space.
