Villa Ribota is a huge farmhouse with plenty of space for up to 12 people to relax and unwind. Nestled into a vine-covered hillside in the heart of the magnificent Barolo wine region, it has beautiful views across the vineyards and hazelnut groves to the hilltop town of Novello and to the snow-capped Alps beyond.
The Villa offers the best of both worlds... it is immersed in the peace and tranquility of the countryside, yet it is just a couple of minutes' drive from the vineyards, wine bars and restaurants of Barolo, La Morra, Novello and Monforte D'Alba. The nearest winery is just a short walk away and you can follow trails through the vines which run directly from the garden to wineries, restaurants and local towns.
The house (fully renovated in 2014/15) combines traditional local features, such as brick vaulted ceilings and exposed stone walls with modern style and comforts. Huge picture windows make the most of the view across the vineyards, while the modern, fully-equipped kitchen offers everything you need to perfect your Piemontese cooking.
Outside you'll find a beautiful swimming pool, covered eating area and good-sized garden, all with wonderful views. There is parking for three cars at the rear of the property.
There are 5 spacious bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms. The house sleeps up to a maximum of 12 people (as two extra beds/cribs can be added to any of the 5 bedrooms).
Bedroom One is downstairs, with direct access to the garden and pool. It has vaulted ceilings and an en-suite bathroom with shower and bath tub. It has a double bed (US King size) with space to add another single bed or crib. It can also be set up with two single beds (90cm wide) instead of a double.
Bedroom Two is in the former hayloft area. It is a huge room, with high ceilings and massive picture windows. It has a double bed (180cm, US King size) or can be arranged with two single beds (each 90cm wide). A further single bed or crib can be added if needed.
Bedroom Three is also in the old hayloft. It has a double bed (180cm wide, US King) or can be set up with two single beds (each 90cm wide). It offers views to the east, straight through the vines. Bedrooms Two and Three share a large, modern bathroom with double sinks, walk-in shower and bath tub.
Bedroom Four is a huge room with access to the balcony. It has a double bed (180cm, US King) or can be set up as two singles (each 90cm wide) and a further single bed or crib can be added if needed. It has an ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower.
Bedroom Five is also a very decent size, with balcony access. It has a double bed (180cm wide, US King) or can be arranged with two single beds (each 90cm wide), with space to add a further single bed or crib. It has its own modern bathroom with shower (not en-suite).
Kitchen - Downstairs you will find the modern kitchen, which has everything you need to cook for up to 12 people, including a gas hob, oven, dishwasher, coffee machine and two medium-sized mocha coffee makers (these are simple espresso makers which you put on the stove. They are standard in Italian households).
Laundry - Off the kitchen is a utility room with washing machine, iron, ironing board, drying rack, vacuum cleaner and other cleaning equipment. There is also a WC off the utility room, with toilet and sink.
Living/Dining - Also downstairs, this features brick vaulted ceilings, an open fireplace (wood is available) and an exposed Langhe stone wall. The dining table has plenty of space for 12 people. There is direct access from here to the outside dining area. The comfortable living area has seating for 12 and a flatscreen HD TV with UK satellite channels. There is also a DVD player and an extensive library of DVDs available.
Outside - A bamboo-shaded dining area with views across the pool and vineyards seats 12 in comfort and there is also a barbecue.
Swimming pool - completed in summer 2015, this is the perfect place to unwind after a tough day of tasting wine or hiking through the vineyards. It has views straight across the vineyards to the town of Novello, and beyond to the southern Alps. It is unheated so is only open in summer months, when the temperature allows (usually from May to September). If the pool is vital to your stay, please check with us upon booking that it will be open when you are here.
The garden has a large grassed area which runs straight into the vines. In the autumn, guests can help themselves to fruit (figs, peaches and sharan fruit) and hazelnuts from our trees.
At the rear of the house is a small storage area, useful for storing bikes and golf clubs. We have several sets of golf clubs for guests to use. There is an electric-bike rental company nearby, who will deliver to the house on request.
Parking - there is a private parking area to the rear of the property, large enough for three to four cars.
Cleaning - The house is cleaned before your arrival and again after you leave. If you would like a cleaner to come in during your stay, please let us know after you have booked and we will let you know the additional cost.
Linen - Bed sheets, bath and hand towels, pool towels and kitchen towels are all provided.
Internet - the house has wireless internet. Due to our location in the countryside it is provided by radio signal. It usually works extremely well, but can be less reliable during bad weather.
The house sleeps 10 people in five bedrooms, though we also have two additional single beds and two cribs that can be added to any of the rooms, bringing the total number to 12, including children.
Guests have access to the entire property.
Interaction with guests
We live next door to the property (the house was originally one very long Cascina, which we have divided in two), separated by a hedge of Jasmin. We are available to help guests both in the run-up to and during their stay and to offer advice on walks, bike rides, restaurants and wineries. We regularly arrange cooking classes, wine tastings and truffle hunts, and can also arrange for a chef to cook for you during your stay.
The house is in a peaceful yet well-connected location, surrounded by vines and hazelnut groves. There are a number of walks through the vines and on country roads, running straight from the property. You can easily walk to Novello for lunch, or to Barolo, La Morra or Monforte d'Alba, all on vineyard tracks and quiet country lanes.
There are also a number of great wineries within walking (or very short driving) distance where you can taste the local wines and chat with the producers.
100 metres down the road is Barolo Golf Club (currently closed), a small, nine-hole course which also has a bar serving coffee, cakes and simple lunches.
The closest restaurant is Buon Padre, in the tiny village of Vergne, just a couple of minutes' drive from the house. There is also a small grocery store here, which sells bread and other essentials.
The nearest towns are Novello, Barolo and La Morra, each around five minutes in a car. The closest is Novello, which though small, boasts a castle, three fabulous restaurants, a pizzeria, a wine bar, a café, a bread shop, pharmacy, grocery store and a wine cellar.
La Morra is much larger and has a wonderful array of wine bars, restaurants and cafés. There is a small supermarket, butcher, bread shop and a wonderful wine cellar. Barolo is a wine-lover's paradise, with tasting rooms, a huge wine cellar, restaurants and dozens of wineries. There is also the highly-acclaimed Wine Museum and the rather quirky Corkscrew Museum, great for rainy days.
Ten minutes away is Monforte d'Alba, one of the area's most beautiful villages, which again has some great restaurants and wine bars, as well as a small amphitheatre which boasts wonderful views of the whole area.
Further afield - The beautiful city of Alba (which host the International White Truffle Fair) is around 20 minutes away, Bra (the home of Slow Food) is 15 minutes and Mondoví is around 30 minutes. Turin is less than an hour away. If you're feeling energetic, you can be hiking in the mountains in just under an hour and the Ligurian coast is also around 60 minutes away.
The nearest airport is Turin, about 60 minutes away. Milan Malpensa and Linate, and Genova, are within two hours. The nearest transport hubs are Alba and Bra, both with train and bus stations. You will almost certainly need a car during your stay if you are to get the most from the area.
Other things to note
We maintain the pool and garden ourselves. We always endeavour to do this at a time most convenient for our guests, ideally while you are out, but this may not always be possible. We will always check with you first though.
Check-in is between 4pm and 7pm; please let us know if you will be arriving outside of these hours. Check-out is by 10am.
Bath and pool towels, bed linen, kitchen towels and utilities are all included in the price.
Smoking is not permitted in the house, but it is permitted in outside areas.
Sorry, no pets allowed.
The pool is used entirely at your own risk. Please ensure that children are supervised at all times.
Although the property is usually very peaceful, please be aware that we are in a working countryside area, so from time to time there will be tractors working in the vines. In the autumn, you can often hear truffle dogs barking through the fog as they search for white truffles in the woods below the house. In fact, you can even join in on a truffle hunt yourself!
