A bright and spacious private flat in a characteristic hillside village, 45 minute drive to the beautiful Le Cinque Terre. Portofino and Pisa are nearby. Set in the beautiful Val di Vara. Great fly/drive holiday. Ideal for walking and cycling. Perfect for families.

The space
I have included photos of every room in the flat. Our flat is in an old style building, but was completely renovated only ten years ago, so it is mixture of old and new with tiled marble floors and high ceilings, and all modern fittings.
Here's a description:
There is a fully equipped bright and sunny kitchen/ dining room with a private balcony, where you can hang clothes to dry. It is very sunny in the mornings and big enough to sun bathe!
There is a spacious bedroom with a double bed, and one bedroom with two single beds, which can be folded away and turned into a settee. These beds are great for children, but 'smaller' adults can sleep well too! Wouldn't suit larger burly Rugby players for example!! This room has a large TV and two armchairs.
The bathroom has a shower.
Carro is a very safe place and in the summer we leave the door open to let the air flow through the flat.

Cars have to be parked outside the small cemetery because Carro is a very old village and many streets can only be accessed on foot. This keeps it traffic free and quiet. Parking is free. Cases and shopping have to be carried up the slope. The flat has stairs and no lift.

Where you’ll be

Carro, Liguria, Italy

Carro has been likened to paradise and I see it as a retreat from life! A perfect place to relax and be immersed in nature. It’s a very peaceful place with friendly people and a pace of life that is perfect for a holiday.
Even though it is very small Carro has a bar, post office, grocery store, chemist ( open for an hour at lunchtime) and pizzeria/restaurant.

In August there is much more life in the village, as the Italians take their summer holidays and they celebrate in style with festas, dances, and concerts. Posters of coming events are pinned around the village.

Carro itself is the birthplace of Nicolo Paganini’s father, and so each year they hold the amazing Festival Paganini. Musicians of the highest quality come from all over the world to perform in the piazza in front of the church. Tickets are available at the door.

Wonderful beaches like Monte Rosso, Levanto and Bonassola are about 40 minutes away by car. In July and August there is a coach that will drive you to and from the seaside town of Deiva, where there is a beach. This happens twice a day every day and is free of charge. All you have to do is visit the Commune and tell them you are staying in Carro and they’ll give you a pass. This is a great way of meeting people and is highly recommended because parking near the beaches in high season is very difficult and costly.

About 15 minutes away is the larger town of Sesta Godano, where you can buy petrol and where there are larger food stores. This is also where you will go if you’re into horses because every year at the end of July they have a huge cowboys/ ranch festival. Look out for the posters!

Sesta Godano also has a brand new, (opens in 2016) wonderful outdoor swimming pool, gym, restaurant and disco, called 'Fully'. It’s a fabulous place to spend the day. You find it at the beginning of the village, a few minutes after the car dealers, just turn right and follow the signs. Don’t miss it!

Carro is not far from incredibly beautiful famous places like Le Cinque Terre, Pisa, Lucca and Portofino. Larger cities, La Spezia and Genoa, are about an hour away and the nearest train station is in Sestri Levante. These places are all easily reached via the spectacular motorway. The beautiful Via Aurelia will reward you with fantastic views.

The lush Val de Vara is an ideal place for walking and cycling, and there is the river Vara nearby where we go wild swimming every year – it’s a fantastic river – ask the people in the small garage in San Pietro Vara and they’ll tell you where to go. Canoeing is available in the spring and autumn.

Some of my favorite places are the river, Varese Ligure, Rapallo, the Baia di Silenzio in Sestri Levante, Monte Gottero, ( the highest mountain in the province of La Spezia, about as high Ben Nevis), an easy walk to the top and if there are no clouds you will be rewarded with spectacular views.

Have a great time!

This is how I came to have my lovely apartment in Carro.

My parents were Italian (my father from Varazze and my mother from Rapallo). They emigrated to England after the war and I was born in London. I am married to Graeme who is Scottish, and we have a teenaged son called Fabio.

My parents retired in 1989 and returned to Italy, which was a big change after 40 years in London! My father wanted to live in the Ligurian foothills because he loved the beauty of countryside and everything it had to offer. My mother really appreciated the comparatively fresh summer air and the crisp deep winter snow!

As my parents first wound their way up to Carro all those years ago, they were sure a special adventure was about to begin. They loved it so much that they bought the first house they were shown. It was perfectly located just outside the beautiful village. I remember my father saying that there was no point looking at others when they loved this one!

When my father introduced me to Carro I instantly fell in love with this charming little village. It became our new family home, and my sister and I visited them as much as possible with our husbands, kids, and friends.

Graeme and I are both teachers and we have always spent most of our long holidays in Carro getting to know the people and the area.

After my father’s death, my mother wanted to live in the village itself to be closer to the many friends they had made over the years. She chose the apartment that we are now lovingly renting out, and lived in it for almost 10 years. So it is a very special place for us.

Graeme and I live in the UK, and so our apartment is now empty most of the year, which we think is very sad because we know what a wonderful place it is to be on holiday!

It makes us happy to know that like-minded people are visiting and discovering the wonders of this part of Italy.

So, we have prepared the apartment for visitors. Our friend Francesca, who is a native of Carro, will make sure it is kept immaculately clean and see to your comfort, and she will be there to welcome you.

Thanks very much for reading.
