The chalet is conveniently located close enough to enjoy all the hustle and bustle of Chamonix with its bars, restaurants and numerous events, while also providing a nice retreat back to peace and tranquility.
Les Houches itself, has the charm of a traditional alpine village, but provides its own bustle and activity, with plenty of welcoming restaurants (La Chavanne, Kistch Inn, Le Délice, La Ginguette); fabulous traders in local produce (boulangerie Jacquier, the fromagerie de la fruitère, the farmers market on Route du Pont wed afternoons).
As well of course as its endless possibilities for outdoor and mountain related activities in winter or summer. Even pretty spring and colourful autumn aren't too bad (and available at cheaper rates)!
Les Houches is one of the 5 world renowned ski areas of the Chamonix Valley which also include Les Grands Montets, Brévents/Flégère, Balme/Vallorcine and the Vallée Blanche. Ski passes can include all areas or just Les Houches.
Les Houches ski area itself is at the foot of the Mont Blanc mountain. From the summit of its ski area, the 360º view is spectacular, and glimpses of the Mont Blanc range through its forest trails are a real delight.
It considered particularly family and child-friendly, with great beginner and intermediate pistes, as well as nursery slopes for learning and babysitting/creche services to allow parents a few hours uninterrupted skiing!
But really caters all the way to top level skiers, being famous for hosting the downhill World Cup on its Kandahar run.
The cable cars stay open in the summer months for hikers and mountain bikers to enjoy spectacular mountains and soaring peaks.
As mentioned before, it's a couple of minutes away from the exit off the Geneva-Chamonix motorway and a 1 hour drive from Geneva airport.
There are also numerous minibus services that run from Geneva airport to Les Houches. We've used AlpyBus on several occasions and they dropped us right at the doorstep.
Although a car does make things easier, it is perfectly possible to get around with public transport, or walking and cycling. The bus stop is less than 3 mins walk away with a free bus service Les Houches and the Chamonix valley.
There is also a train service from Les Houches to all the villages of the valley. It's a very picturesque ride and a lovely way to explore the area.
We positively encourage our guests to make use of these local services: all our guests get a Carte d'Hôte, which gives free access to local transport.
In the summer, we regularly cycle to Chamonix (15 minutes) and Les Houches. There are plenty of bicycle hire shops.

I'm a childrenswear designer who lives outside Geneva with her husband and son. My career has slightly been put on hold since his birth, which coincided with our arrival in this part of the world.
Still new to the area, we're completely in awe, and spend as much of our spare time as possible exploring the region and enjoying the mountains.
