About this listing

Comfortable, clean, spacious room. New, furniture for your use only, and clean kitchen and bathroom facilities, next to Capa Sehremini tram station. Fabulous view of Istanbul from your own balcony. Easy access to universities, airport, tourism.

The space

This room is for non-smokers only and will suit responsible and clean guests. Gay friendly.

Your room has a new and comfortable queen-sized bed, new and empty wardrobe and drawers for your use only, table, chairs, rugs, blackout curtains, net curtains and its own covered balcony boasting a magnificent view across Istanbul.

Alcohol friendly, but please don’t throw up.

Guest access

You may use the kitchen and sitting room as well as all facilities, but please leave everything as you find it. My kitchen, WC and shower (very large shower cabinet,) are spotless and hygienic and I will appreciate your co-operation in keeping them that way.

I ask that major eating be confined to the kitchen, which is large and has table and chairs.

There is a (shared) clothes airer which you will be able to put on your balcony when you do washing.

Your two radiators have separate control in your room for you to regulate the temperature.

Interaction with guests

I am a female university professor and out at least four days a week from 8.30 to 5.30 so you will have the place to yourself.

I will be available for help and advice at weekends and evenings. I can take you to my gym and help with visits at the weekend. During the working week I can be available by phone but not when I'm in class.

If you are interested in a longer period we can discuss that. If you want to have people round, we can discuss that also.

NB The flat is on the sixth floor and there is no lift but if I can manage it, I'm sure you can, and it's worth it for the view.

Other things to note

Capa is a vibrant part of the old city with every kind of shop, and numerous restaurants and cafes within metres of the front door. All the surrounding streets comprise a lively shopping area with Macdonalds if you really need that, a central park and seating area, a wonderful market on Tuesdays, and a handy gym just minutes away, major banks, money exchange, as well as many other shops on the main road by the tramway outside.

A considerable part of the old city wall is about 15 minutes walk or one stop on the tram. Trams are frequent and the most comfortable mode of transport but there are buses outside as well as mini shared buses and a taxi rank.

This is not a touristic area as such, so there are not noisy bars or clubs nearby but there are a couple of pubs which I haven’t been in so can’t comment on, but will be glad to take a look together. You will not be troubled by night revellers.

Istanbul University Medical Faculty is literally across the road and other major universities are served by the trams and buses outside. The Metrobus is in easy walking distance. Taksim is under 30 minutes by tram and metro or there is a direct bus outside, if you want to go to the centre of Istanbul.

Very clean, tidy place; perfectly situated near public transport. Our host was kind and helpful, very welcoming! She also arranged a fabulous birthday dinner for us with one of her friends who owns a restaurant called Sirevi - this dinner was the highlight of our trip and would not have been possible without her. She also gave us plenty of advice on getting around in general, finding reliable transport and well-priced food. The squat toilet in the flat did not appeal to us, but that is only because we are not used to it all. Our host was very accommodating - we could do our own thing, coming home late / getting up early, and felt that we had plenty of privacy, so overall it was a very pleasant stay. Our room was neat and spacious, with blackout curtains to block out the light. The flat is on the 6th floor, so perhaps if you are not fit to walk up 6 flights of stairs (there is no elevator) it might be a bit tough, but this was no problem for us at all. We were in Istanbul for a conference at a nearby hotel as well as some holiday exploring in between; either way, this flat was the perfect base from which to operate during our travels and daily activities. Thanks for a great airbnb experience!

Response from Mae:
I'd love a 'normal toilet.' The landlord has just put my rent up so I did ask for a more modern convenience but will not hold my breath on that.

I stayed with Mae for 18 days in October. She prepared me for the visit (my first to Istanbul) via email and (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN). She was always quick to respond, and very informative, as you would expect after studying her page here. Thanks to her instructions I was able to use metro (M1) and tram (T1) to get from Ataturk to her door, in the dark. The space is in good condition, roomy and clean. Things work. Note that this is a 6th floor walkup with toilet in the floor; neither was a problem for me. I enjoyed living in this neighborhood, dense with shops and eateries, and teeming with life. Tourists are scarce here. Go to the nearby Tuesday market if you're not afraid of getting a bit lost. The T1 tram will never keep you waiting long, and it will take you to most of the famous sites. Mae was a great host. Her shedule was busy but she was always eager to help me navigate and enjoy the city. Conversations were fascinating—she's well-educated, interested in the world, and has lived in at least a handful of other countries. This was an entirely positive experience.
