About this listing

The Byre, a three hundred year old barn, is nestled amongst hills and fields. With astounding views, it was part of the famous Baskerville Estate. Beautifully restored , it has a wealth of oak timbers and flagged floors throughout. There's a superb oak framed garden room overlooking your garden and pastures.

The space

A unique rural escape just two miles from Hay on Wye, The Byre was built from local Welsh oak over three hundred years ago. When we moved to the farm twenty four years ago it was home to our small herd of Anglo Nubian goats. Traditionally it would have housed cattle. Now it's a super cosy retreat, comfortable, warm and filled with good things for you to enjoy!
From The Byre you can see the remains of woodland where the oaks were felled to build the farm. The valley is rich in wildlife- badgers, foxes, barn owls, red kites and buzzards. Below the farm a stream travels down towards
the river Wye. The Byre has a private garden for you to enjoy this beautiful valley.
There is a large car parking area just for you. In the shed you'll find lots of
logs from our wood, a barbecue and a small freezer.
The bird feeders are kept filled throughout the year. You will see many different birds throughout your stay. As you relax in the garden you can expect to hear the stream in our fields below you.
Our fantastic welcome pack with Steve's home made bread, fresh from the oven, our own eggs, cereals, juice, fresh fruit, local bacon, milk, teas and coffee, as well as home made jams and marmalade, means that you will have everything you need for that all important breakfast to set you up for the day- whether you're aiming to explore Hay on Wye's great shops and castle or looking for something more adventurous, such as hiring a canoe, mountain bike or horse. The scenery is superb.
On your arrival we can offer lots of advice about things to enjoy locally, including great places to eat. But we also respect your privacy and know that you are probably looking forward to peace and quiet...and we promise you that you will definitely unwind whilst staying in The Byre!
Coming in the winter or cooler months? No problem. On your arrival the log stove will be lit, the lights will be low and The Byre will be wonderfully cosy for you.

Guest access

Hand crafted, locally made and well equipped oak kitchen with everything that you will need for your stay. The sitting room has a great log burner (plenty of free logs available from our own woodland), large, comfortable sofa and armchair, gorgeous Welsh blankets, TV and DVDs. There's free Wifi of course as well as books and games. The garden room has comfy chairs and there are loungers for sunny days too in the garden as well as table and chairs for outside dining. The shower room has a heated towel rail and cosy gowns are provided for your stay.

We can accommodate a baby- we provide a cot, mattress, duvet, pillow and bed linen- but not children.

Interaction with guests

We know the area very well, having lived here for over twenty four years, and we are always on hand to offer advice, answer any questions or help in any way. The Byre has guide books and lots of suggestions for things to do and places to eat! However we will always respect your privacy too. We always greet our guests and ask you in advance to let us know what time you expect to arrive so we can be sure to be here. Arrivals are from 3pm. There's always Michele's home made lemon drizzle cake waiting for you as well as Steve's fabulous home made bread fresh from the oven. . At Christmas time we welcome you with a glass of something special and lots of extra treats. But we get booked up early for that...

Other things to note

We have horses, sheep, hens, ducks, cats and dogs. You are welcome to meet them if you wish.
This is a farming neighbourhood so you might hear the odd tractor in the distance.
We provide crisp bed linen and all towels as well as shampoo and shower gel.

We had a lovely stay at the cottage - it was very cosy and peaceful and we wish we'd been able to stay longer! The bread and lemon drizzle cake provided were delicious. There was an excellent shower and beautiful views from the conservatory. It was a very short, easy drive into Hay-on-Wye. The friendly and welcoming hosts also recommended a fantastic walk up Hay Bluff nearby. I highly recommend staying here.

If you are reading this because the Byre has come up in your search results (and you have a car), you should quickly book it before you read the rest. This is hands down the best self catering we've ever stayed in - it really is like an extension of the owners home because everything in it is something you would choose to have in your own home - no lumpy cushions or other old tat here. Instead, a lovely wood burner, appliances that work perfectly and beautiful touches such as the wool duvets. I won't go into the welcome basket other than to second all the great things said by others. But I will add that the birds chirp and flitter all day and we found ourselves getting up in the middle of the night just to look at amazingly dark sky. And I'm a city girl...go figure. This is a lovely, warm, welcoming place in an amazing setting, with Hay, Brecon, the Elan Valley all in very easy driving distance. What more could anyone want.

What a review. We have both shed a few tears this morning- coming back from our magical time in NZ to somewhere that we love and feel proud of to find that you clearly love The Byre and feel its pull is wonderful. Thank you. Xx

We had a wonderful time staying in 'The Byre'. Michele and Steve are fantastic hosts and the restoration of this unique property oozes quality and attention to detail. The situation is excellent - very quiet and private but within 5-10 minutes drive to Hay with it's many attractions. As previous reviewers have mentioned the welcome and the 'welcome pack' are first rate with home made soda bread and Michele's outstanding lemon drizzle cake! We fell in love with the area and hope to make a return visit as soon as possible.

A BEAUTIFUL cottage in such a scenic location. Great walking nearby and very much enjoyed exploring the town of Hay on Wye about 5-10 minutes drive away! Excellent hosts, great communication and made us feel so welcome - the log burner on when we arrived! I would highly recommend this property to stay in! Thank you Michele!

We had a wonderful stay at The Byre. Michelle and Steve went to incredible lengths to make our trip as comfortable as possible, even providing some excellent homemade bread and lemon drizzle cake, and lighting the fire for our arrival on a cold January night. The kitchen and cottage as a whole is incredibly well equipped, it's a shame we didn't get to stay longer than a weekend. We can't recommend it enough!

Steve and Michele are a lovely and welcoming couple. The Byre is a cosy, and rustic cottage which we would come back to again and again. Thank you for a lovely stay and the generous extra goodies.

We loved our stay to say the least!!! This is a very special accommodation in an idyllic setting cared for by genuinely kind and generous hosts, Michele and Steve. The Bryre is a wood and stone cottage with high quality finishings, charming and cozy decor, and excellent amenities. The views are breathtaking!!! The setting is extremely peaceful and the booktown of Hay is only a short drive away (less than 10 mins). The town has a whole foods deli, restaurants which we found to serve very yummy food, warm and friendly pubs, and there is a co-op grocery store just a short drive from the town centre. I whole- heartedly recommend a trip to Hay and staying at this cottage. The quality and aesthetics of the cottage, the fresh baked bread and farm eggs, the warm welcome and care from Michele and Steve, and the rolling patchwork green fields littered with sheep come together for a magical stay. I hope you are fortunate enough to find availability.

I have lived in this wonderful place with my husband Steve and our family of animals for twenty four years. We love the outdoor life- be it horse riding, walking, kayaking or cycling. We look forward to sharing our part of the world with you.
