This room is the entire 2nd floor of our darling mid-century cape cod-style cottage in Clintonville. With original French windows, wall-to-wall wooden shelving, and charming farmhouse-meets-midcentury vintage decor, this place is a cozy retreat in the heart of our city!

The space

Picture your cool aunt/grandma's amazing cozy finished attic space -- i.e. the dream bedroom -- but without any of those weird hand-me-downs. This space features a luxurious full-size bed, vintage lounge chair and ottoman, and several charming restored farmhouse pieces -- including repurposed orchard crates and even a roost from a 1850s chicken coop! The room also has storage galore for the weary traveler: built-in-wooden shelving all along the stairwell, a darling tiny closet-space, and all the pegboards yr heart could desire. Throw in a Himalayan salt lamp for some I-can't-believe-it's-not-a-fireplace glow, and you've got a place that's the perfect snug hideaway, summer or winter.

With the large plush full-size bed, extra-long couch, comfy dad upholstered chair and ample wooden built-in shelving, this is the ideal suite for vintage-loving traveling folk who want a touch of local color -- whether you're visiting Columbus solo or in a small group. (Bed + couch can accommodate three, but there's sleeping bag room and we sometimes have our other rooms available, so message us with any special inquiries.)

Note: The room is best suited to 2-3 guests -- there is one comfy full-sized bed and a large, comfy vintage couch. Let us know in advance if you have more guests: we can sometimes provide ground pads and sleeping bags and/or cots, or even a tent outside, if you're traveling with a crew! The room itself is very large -- the whole upstairs -- and could comfortable sleep, probably, up to 8 people, if folks were OK sleeping on the floor.

* Note for guests with limited mobility: the loft room is up a flight of stairs. Bathroom is at the bottom of stairs. Please assess wisely if you feel this is beyond your physical requirements at this time. I will do whatever I can to make the room more accessible, but currently the stairs are a reality of the listing*

Photos haven't been updated in a few months, but the space has also been updated to include a lovely vintage couch, several lamps, a small old-skool desk & wee dresser for a full vintage nook feel! Let our charming vintage loft be your home-away-from-home and cozy retreat on the edge of our vibrant city!

Guest access

Since this room is the entire second floor of the house, you'll have your own private stairwell entrance up from the main floor, with a door that shuts.

A stay with us, of course, includes
your beautiful room, and the cozy bathroom is right down the stairs! You'll pass through the kitchen and living room to get to your space, but we maintain these and the rest of our house for our private use. Please respect that. (If you ask in advance we often can provide dry storage space if you have cereal, etc.; or can make you tea!) There's WiFi in your room; and since your room is very spacious, we it's almost a whole apartment unto itself. We allow light meal prep -- breads/cereals/dry goods (yours) and tea (we provide); and refrigeration is sometimes (but not always) available; please contact us in advance if you anticipate needing kitchen use and we can discuss (see House Rules for more details.) We hope you love our space as much as we do!

Interaction with guests

We love getting to know new folks from around the world, and sharing the love and our recommendations for our beloved city! That said, we are both in school and juggling projects that often follow us home from work -- & Jess is often out traveling for fieldwork -- but we'd be happy to hang out, chat, or even take you out for a drink or a bite to eat if we're available!

We've modeled our AirBNB guest philosophy on that of our own favorite host, Margie in Atlanta: we're committed to being around and hanging out if that's what you need, but we're also perfectly content -- as introverts ourselves! -- to just give you some much needed time to relax & recharge in your own space. So, as much or as little interaction as you'd like.

Our pup, Isaly, and kitty Nell, however, may request cuddles from you with our without your permission! Come for the cool rooms; stay for the awesome animals :)

Other things to note

We do have a lovely and gregarious pup, Isaly -- she's a border collie mix, and is the friendliest dog in the world, and will more than likely try to lure you into a game of fetch or a bellyrub at some point during your stay. Our cat, Nell, is also sometimes around (NOTE: as of 2017, Nell is mostly staying in Philadelphia)! We're sure they'll love you and you'll love them, but when you come to stay, we'd love it if you'd just double-check to make sure you're not letting the animal hordes out with you when you come and go! Nell, especially, can be an escape artist hell-bent on getting to all that (delicious) grass/basil/tomatoes/everything in the side yard ...

****** NO A/C IN SUMMERTIME; we use box fans and windows to keep the house cool! Please don't book if you have a medical condition necessitating A/C or otherwise expect it. It doesn't make ecological or financial sense for us. Thanks for understanding! Yay fans!!! ************

We also ask guests to:
-- Not eat/consume/bring meat into the house. We are all *all-vegetarian* house. What you do outside our home is up to you! :)
-- Not use fragranced or perfumed products or chemicals while staying with us. Your host has multiple chemical sensitivity and takes this quite seriously! We provide all-natural shampoo and soap for your use! This means please do not use perfume, hairspray, or artificially-fragranced shampoo, soap or body products while in our home. Ditto for bleach, nail polish, or any other chemicals. We *will* notice.
-- Please take shoes off in living room
-- Please *take care of your room*: use coasters on all furniture (it's vintage); and treat the bed and linens with respect. We ask guests not to eat in bed; and please to be mindful not to wipe makeup on towels.

We also ask guests to be mindful of the following:
* We have a really lovely border collie, named Isaly! You will adore her; and she will not go into your room if you shut the door. But, because she will go in if you leave the door open, we ask you please store all dry food products in a designated space in the kitchen.
* We *don't* provide full kitchen access. No cooking, sorry. You will have access to filtered water, tea, space to prep a packed lunch or cereal if you need it, and a table where you can eat take-out meals. Sometimes we can allow refrigeration. Please ask first. Microwave use only if you arrange in advance; most of our dishes can't go in the microwave. If you have specific kitchen needs, contact us in advance, and we can *sometimes* arrange use, for an additional fee.
* Our kitchen and living room are our personal spaces. They aren't cleaned specifically for guest use; they're working zones. At times, we're not able to do dishes immediately, or have clutter in the living room. That's because we live and work there, y'all. Please understand that your booking is your room and bathroom, not our personal spaces. If you expect to book an entire house, book a whole house, sorry!
* Our bathroom is shared; but, don't worry: we happily coordinate schedules to make sure everyone has access!

Jess's place is warm and charming, and the location is great. Definite bohemian/hippie vibe. I enjoyed meeting Jess and her adorable, well-behaved dog Isaly. My loft room was spacious and airy; the bed was quite comfortable. If you're oblivious like I apparently am, you might not notice there's a thermostat up there too, haha. I spent the night being a little colder than I usually like to be, but that's because I came home late from a wedding and was too tired to do anything but just put on pajamas and get in bed. The next morning I noticed I could have warmed up the room. It wasn't really a problem, but thought I'd mention it for future visitors. Lots of fun little notes, interesting books, and unique items around the loft and house. I appreciated how conscientious Jess was. I booked in the early afternoon for that night, and requested to check in early for an additional fee. I was really busy getting ready for a friend's wedding. My plans kept changing throughout the weekend (wasn't sure which nights I would stay in C-bus, for example) and I had just arrived back in the midwest from Europe, so the weekend was a last-minute scramble. We worked out details through messaging in the app. She was very available if I had questions. From what non-AirBNB chatting we did, I can tell she's very creative and passionate about her interests, which is great! It was a great match for me - I'm vegetarian and like using natural products. Guests are required to follow house rules that I haven't seen at other AirBNBs. That was no problem for me at all. I liked it! But if you want to bring all your buddies over to hang out, spray perfume, or eat steak inside, find a different place. :) She provides natural items for guests to use if you don't have your own. Also keep in mind that if you haven't arranged it with her, the living room and kitchen aren't yours to use. The bathroom is small, but it's well-lit. It's not for everybody, but if you're like me, you'll love it. Neighborhood seems safe and convenient, with lots of cute bungalow/cottage homes. And - perhaps most important to me - THERE IS A CUTE DOG IN THE HOUSE.

Jess’s second floor room is great, it offers a little bit of privacy as well as a lot of space. The location of her is home is wonder for those who want to be close to all the activities Columbus offers, as well as Being away from the hectic downtown. Jess is phenomenal at communicating and a very nice person.

I enjoyed the minimalist character and more-than-adequate size of the very private bedroom. The neighborhood was very quiet and the location is near Ohio State University. The cost of the room was most affordable, and the host is friendly and an excellent communicator.

Nice location in a quiet neighborhood that is also close to OSU. While I never met Jess she was very friendly and accomudating. The bedroom and bathroom were both clean. The kitchen and living room had a lot of stuff and somewhat cluttered. With that stated I would be happy to stay there again if needed.

Response from Jess:
Hi Nathan! Thanks for your feedback. As stated in our house rules and throughout the listing page, our kitchen and living room aren't for guest use. We made a special exception for you to use the fridge, but also made clear we wouldn't be available to specially clean the kitchen for your use. We're somewhat disappointed by this review, given this was a special exception we made. You're welcome back any time; but we won't be allowing kitchen use again.

Jess was super great in helping us check in late with a busy schedule that day, and very prompt in responding to messages. Space was as described and just what we needed. Would definitely stay again!

The attic room is exactly as advertised. I slept very well. Jess is super friendly and helpful - very communicative, as others have said in past reviews. Her dog is adorable and friendly. Be advised that there are other rooms in the house that Jess rents, so you may not be the only one there. For one of my nights there, five people had to share one bathroom. I would consider this place appropriate for budget travelers.

Jess has a cute house with lots of quirk and charm in a residential area of Clintonville. I stayed in her upstairs loft space, which was cozy and private enough considering the reasonable price. Jess is an avid communicator, which can come across as a bit intense. You should definitely read the house rules thoroughly before booking and know that these are things which will be consistently reinforced during your stay. All things considered, the environment has a lot of character, Jess is smart and upbeat, and the dog is cute. I would stay here again.
