Description

The space

My house is a renovated 1910 New Englander with lots of windows and light throughout. The house is small and cute: an open living room with hardwood floors, a kitchen with stainless appliances, cooking supplies and clothes washer/dryer, a downstairs bathroom and two little bedrooms upstairs. I love small spaces and hope you do too. The whole house is 720 s.f. The first guest bedroom has a queen bed, side tables, lighting and a closet for clothing - simple, bright and clean. The second bedroom is smaller with a queen bed and one side table. I should note that the stairs to the guest bedrooms are steep and narrow - fine for most people but perhaps challenging for folks with limited mobility. There's also a blow-up mattress for an extra guest if needed.
I have a small garden and big yard for frisbee tossing.

Guest access

Guests should feel like this is their home and will have access to the whole house and yard. I'll give you key sets upon arrival.

Interaction with guests

This is really based on what the guest prefers: when guests are renting the whole house I'm always nearby if there's an issue or question but I'll give you your space. I'm happy to orient and give advice on all the great scenery, bars, eats, etc. that Portland has to offer. I've lived here for most of my life so have lots of local knowledge to share.

The neighbourhood

I live in Ferry Village, named because the ferry used to run from here to Portland across the harbor before the bridge. It's a cute, friendly neighborhood with lots of families and kids and a nice playground down the street. The Greenbelt Walkway crosses right by my house and it's a short walk (about 10 minutes) to Bug Light Park, Spring Point Breakwater and Lighthouse, and Willard Beach. I'm about a mile from Portland Headlight and Fort Williams Park. It's a short walk to the Willard Beach neighborhood and Scratch Bakery, Willard Scoops Ice Cream, a yoga studio, restaurants and more. By car it's 5 minutes to Portland, and there's a bus stop right near the house. You can also bike the Greenbelt to Portland. If you're a surfer, it's about 15 minutes to Higgins or Scarborough Beach. I can give you info on where to rent boards and wetsuits.

Getting around

If you bring your bike we can store it in my garage. I also have a spare you can use. There's a bus stop right by my house, and it's really easy to walk, bike or drive to Portland or beaches. There's plenty of driveway space for cars.

Other things to note

Check-in is anytime after 4pm and check-out is anytime before 11am.

I provide coffee, tea, bread and fruit for all guests.

Gillian was a great host. Her home was perfect to hang out in and close to the city. She was very responsive. It was very clean and a perfect place to stay for visiting breweries and and eating downtown. Look forward to staying again!!

Gillian's place was fantastic! The location was only a couple minutes from the lighthouses and only about 10 minutes from downtown Portland. The place itself was lovely. Despite arriving in the winter, the place was warm, clean, and had everything we needed. The kitchen was particularly well equipped. There was an awesome selection of books and Gillian even provided some fruit and tea. Gillian left very clear instructions, a list of recommendations (which was quite helpful!) and checked in to see if we were okay. Things could not have gone any smoother. Highly recommend!

Gillians place was the perfect place to stay for a weeks visit to family and friends in South Portland. We loved the coziness of the bedrooms, the beautiful wood floors, the excellent well equipped kitchen. We were snowed in during our stay but shovelling out the snow was so easy with the equipment Gillian had available. There were plenty of books and games and the heating and bathroom were excellent. We would definitely recommend this place for anyone wanting a visit to Portland - which is only a 15 minute drive across the bridge. Shops, bars and the Scratch bakery are all nearby. We will hopefully be able to stay at Gillians again.

Gillian's spot was the bomb, and Gillian was awesome as well. Her place was warm, cozy, relaxing, and super clean. Super close to the lively part of Portland, and Gilliam left us a full list of things to see, places to eat, drink, get cover, ect. We will definitely be back!

I was lucky enough to stay at Gillian's place for four nights, with two of my closest friends. The house is cozy, perfect for a small group. A great kitchen, a comfy couch, and an ideal location right next to the South Portland Greenbelt. Gillian is a generous and communicative host, and she left out coffee and fruit for the mornings. Highly recommend!

We had a fantastic weekend in South Portland! Gillian was very responsive and welcoming - she even left some fresh fruit, bread, coffee and tea out for us. We visited with our 1 and 3 year olds and brought a baby gate with us to keep them off the steep narrow stairs. We arrived on the hottest day of the year so we were definitely happy to have brought a fan with us and thankfully the larger bedroom had air conditioning. There was no microwave nor TV but we didn't need either with the local restaurants and all the local activities. Highly recommend exploring the area on foot, especially the greenbelt pathway, Higgins beach, spring point ledge lighthouse and the local cafes.

I'm a woodworker, swing dancer, sailor and surfer who loves the outdoors and meeting new, interesting people. I just bought this home (my first) a few months ago and look forward to sharing it.
