The space

Aesthetically furnished, cozy, well-lit and air-conditioned bedroom consisting of an antique cot with an eco-friendly and comfortable silk-cotton mattress, a wardrobe with mirror, a study table with chair, an attached clean bath with toilet and modern fittings, including a hot-water geyser and a grilled and meshed (to keep out insects) private balcony. The breezy balcony looking on to a lovely Thespia tree is an ideal space for reading, listening to music or simply quiet reflection.

Available for short- or long-term stay (minimum of one week and maximum three months).

The flat is situated on the second floor of a safe two-storeyed apartment building at Indira Nagar. It is close to amenities, bus stops and the metro station and is in the proximity of Tiruvanmiyur, Besant Nagar and its famed beach, the Tidel Park, Indian Institute of Technology and educational institutions at Taramani-Guindy and such cultural and historic institutions as the Theosophical Society with its botanically-rich grounds and the Kalakshetra.

With its quiet ambience, the flat is ideally suited to single professionals [or a couple], academics, researchers, musicians and artists looking for a place to reside and work while in Chennai.

You'll be preferably male [or a couple] and certainly someone who will take perfect care of the flat, will happily share the same with us, your hosts, a middle-aged couple, both researchers who had lived in Europe for several years and who have avid interest in human rights and ecological issues, trees, design/art and antiques.

And when you book, please do include two or three sentences about yourself, your background and your interests and what you intend to do in Chennai. We'd certainly like to meet someone creative and whose presence can enliven us.

Although we love children, this flat is unfortunately unsuited to their needs.

Guest access

You are most welcome to use the lounge including the modest library of books chiefly on philosophy and literature and the television as well as the kitchen facilities, which include a microwave cooker, fridge, and gas stove. The small work area is where a washing machine is kept, and the guest is free to use it. You can dry your clothes on the clothes-line provided in your private balcony; the Chennai breeze will dry them in no time!

Interaction with guests

We are normally around to help you discover interesting parts of the city.

You can make your tea anytime and we normally provide you a good breakfast by 0830 hrs. Depending on how smoothly things work out, we could also occasionally cook together, chiefly good South Indian fare. We can give you contact numbers to order good and healthy homemade food for lunch or dinner.

The neighbourhood

Chennai's cultural institutions in Besant Nagar and Tiruvanmiyur including the historic Kalakshetra are close to the flat. Besides these, you have the Cholamandal Artists' Village and Dakshinchitra, the architectural museum situated at a distance of about ten km from the flat on the East Coast Road (ECR) and the Pallava architectural complex of Mamallapuram a further 30 km away; the former French colony of Pondicherry can be reached by the ECR (another 80 km) in an hour and a half.

The city's premier educational institutions including the Indian Institute of Technology and several other IT firms on the Old Mamallapuram Road are very close to the flat.

The historic parts of the city, including Fort St George, Mylapore and Triplicane and the Marina/University of Madras can be easily reached by public transport.

Getting around

The location of the flat provides easy access to public (bus and metro) transport connecting various parts of the city and other districts of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, besides you can find taxi and travel operators within close proximity.

Anytime pick up and drop services for Chennai Airport and Chennai Central and Egmore railway terminals are available.

Other things to note

You are expected to take perfect care of the room, keep it tidy, allow us access for cleaning. You are also expected to behave with utmost sensitivity as the apartment building consists of seven other flats, which serve as homes to children and elderly members besides young professionals leading busy lives.

House Rules

There are no hard and fast house rules except that we expect you to be tidy, courteous, sensible and caring.

As environmentally conscious people, we do our best to reduce the consumption of plastic, keeping surroundings free of plastic waste, and/or recycling where possible. We you will honor this during your stay with us and keep your room and environs clean.

And since this is our home, we will unfortunately be not able to entertain your guests.

This was a perfect stay - right from the beginning, they helped me book tickets to other parts of India, and cooked breakfast in the morning. We had a lot of great conversations about places to visit in Chennai, history of India, etc. Would recommend to my own family if they were traveling!

I'm a researcher on human rights and a former journalist. My wife is a historian of science and published author. We have just returned to India after a 15 year stint in the UK. We are widely traveled and cosmopolitan in our outlook, passionate about several things including trees, design and antiques. It might interest you to know that we have built a house on the banks of river Meenachil in Kerala mostly using recycled material and we hope to open this to guests soon. At the moment we live between Chennai and Kerala.

We would particularly love artists, writers and academics from across the world come and stay with us.
