About this listing
Our beautiful Cottage is in a quiet cul-de-sac of a leafy, established residential suburb at the foot of the Stellenbosch mountains. It's an open-plan self-catering unit that sleeps two persons, has its own private entrance and street parking.
Wild Plum Cottage is a great place to stay in Stellenbosch.
It's quiet, spacious, secure and private. It has one bedroom with a queen bed, an 'en suite' (shower, no bath), as well as a large open-plan lounge/dining/kitchen area.
The whole cottage has been recently refurbished with new appliances, repainted in neutral tones, and supplied with new linen - including luxurious egyptian cotton bedlinen and the softest, fluffiest bath towels. It has a wonderful light, plenty of space, and a calming ambience with touches of luxury.
We have tried to keep the decor to a minimum to avoid a cluttered feel, but we have included a bookcase stocked with a selection of local and international literature, local history, local tourist information and guides… even some take away menus for those days when you don't feel like cooking nor going out (which we figure is unlikely owing to the amazing collection of restaurants we have in our town!). Feel free to choose some light reading during your stay but please bear in mind that these books are from our own private collection and cannot be removed from the cottage.
The artwork on the walls is made by your host, Ros Koch, who works from her studio next door and sells her work both locally and overseas. Please let us know of you are interested in any of the work as it is all available for sale. Alternatively, pop by next door and you might find her hard at work in her studio on one of her many projects.
Adding to the spaciousness is the fact that the Cottage opens out onto a garden patio, shaded in summer by a wild plum tree, which lends its name to the Cottage. This is an ideal space for relaxing outside - say - with a glass of chilled white wine and a good book, as you listen to the sounds of birdsong and water trickling gently into the pool. Or, if you're feeling social, it's also a great little space for setting up a barbecue for some outdoor entertaining with a few friends. Just let us know in advance and we can set up the barbecue for you.
In the winter months, there is a lovely wood burner in the lounge and we provide all that you will need to get a roaring fire going, as well as extra blankets and hot water bottles should the need arise. Hot cocoa and candles make the place a very cosy space to be in the cold and blustery season.
To sum up, Wild Plum Cottage is ideal for couples looking for a convenient base from which to explore the Winelands; a singleton seeking peace and quiet from the buzz of town life; a professional needing a base for a business trip stopover; or even a self-catering 'camp' for small families. Please bear in mind that there is no pool fence between the Cottage and the pool.
If you have need, we have a sleeper couch available on request which can be set up, with linen, in the lounge area for an extra charge.

You have exclusive access to the entire Cottage, as well as your own private patio garden. There is also a private backyard where the firewood is located and which is available for safe storage of any large items of guests' property (e.g. mountain bikes). Guests travelling with their own car can park on the street next to the Cottage.
There is also access to a swimming pool. This is the family pool of the hosts (who live in the main house next-door) and who also use the pool from time to time. We kindly request you respect our privacy by alerting us to when you may wish to use the pool. We don't want to cause any inconvenience; we simply ask that you offer us this courtesy simply to avoid any potentially embarrassing situations, that's all : )
We expect responsible and respectful behaviour in the pool area, especially as the main house overlooks the pool area.
Guests use the pool at their own risk.
Interaction with guests
Your hosts live in the main house next door to the Cottage, and are available if ever you need anything.
The Cottage has its own private entrance and so you can come and go as you please. It is very private so, if you prefer / need to be on your own, you need not fear being disturbed.
Conversely, if you'd like company, or simply have a question to ask, you can pop next door to meet your hosts, or join us in the pool area.
If you're lucky, you may just get a visit from "Pusscat" of "Pixie" - our two friendly cats.
Wild Plum Cottage is situated in a quiet cul-de-sac of Brandwacht, an established, leafy, residential suburb at the foot of the mountains of Stellenbosch. It's a family-friendly suburb, complete with speed bumps, winding roads and a fair share of dead ends! Please drive responsibly and with due caution.
We consider it a relatively 'safe' neighborhood (e.g. children play in the streets and the people who live and work in the neighbourhood are generally friendly and approachable).
However, as with anywhere in the world, it is wise to exercise caution (e.g. do not leave valuables in your car, lock your vehicle, lock up the cottage when you go on an excursion, etc.). If you have any security concerns, please don't hesitate to ask.
The Cottage has the best of both worlds: it is just a five minute walk from bush, forest and farmland and yet it is also only a five minute's drive (2km) away from the centre of historic Stellenbosch, with its variety of excellent restaurants, shops, cafes, cinemas, galleries, gardens and museums.
The Cottage is also within easy reach of many of the Cape's historic wine farms, golf courses, beaches, and nature reserves. It is the perfect base from which to explore the beautiful Cape.
Stellenbosch is about a 30minute drive from Cape Town airport and 45minutes from central Cape Town.
Means of transport:
If you do not have your own car, we highly recommend either hiring one and/or using Uber or a similar service. The latter option is highly recommended when visiting wine farms and when dining out in the evenings. Otherwise, for short trips or little tours, one can hire bikes at various places in Stellenbosch.
Just ask us for more details when you arrive and we will help advise you get the right set of wheels for the journeys you have planned.
Public transport between Cape Town and Stellenbosch is not very reliable. Whilst travelling by train is very affordable, the services are infrequent and slower than going by car. There is no public bus service between Cape Town and Stellenbosch. There are 'minibus taxis' that are used mostly to ferry commuters between the surrounding towns and villages but their routes are not planned with tourists in mind and, unless you're a local, they can be a little intimidating to use to get around : )
Other things to note
We'd like to make your stay as welcoming and relaxing as possible.
Do let us know if you need anything - from beach towels to umbrellas, suncream to freshly ground coffee. We'd like to set things up just how you'd like it to be.
If, once you arrive, you find you need something extra, please don't hesitate to let us know and we'll do our best to assist.
If you are staying for longer than a week, a weekly cleaning service can be arranged (on a mutually agreeable day) for an additional cost of R150 (cash). This service will include the provision of fresh bed linen and towels as well as a general clean of the Cottage.
For personal items of clothing, we can recommend good local launderettes.
Our only 'house rule' is that you respect our property as you would your own.
(So, for example, if you break something, well - accidents happen hey? But please just let us know so we can replace what needs replacing in good time).
Oh, and if you smoke, please do so outdoors and dispose of your filters safely and responsibly (i.e. in the refuse bin provided)
Cancel up to 7 days before your trip and get a 50% refund plus service fees back.
We are an easy going, fun-seeking, and social couple.
We love meeting new people and traveling to new places.
But we also love spending time at home, chilling out with our family.
We are both curious. We like reading and travelling. Ros is creative too and loves sketching, doodling, painting and drawing.
We both love the outdoors and enjoy being active, whether that be cycling and hiking in the mountains or just chucking a frisbee in the park.
We love discovering the past. Exploring buildings that talk to you from centuries past. Medieval villages. Rustic farmhouses. Little nooks. Secret hideaways. The road less travelled. We love exploring off the beaten track. Forests. Mountains. Rivers. Water. Nature. Landscapes that you can breathe in. Vistas that take your breath away.
