Description

The space

Romantic and stylish apartment, It's the perfect base from which to explore Edinburgh from. I've already had some great people come and stay, so I welcome you to my home.


Edinburgh castle is a short walk away from the apartment, and the National Gallery, St Giles Cathedral, National Museum of Scotland are all close by.

My apartment is on the fourth floor of an 18th Century tenement with views on to the historic Royal Mile. With all mod cons and a unique location, this is the perfect apartment to have as a base while you explore Edinburgh.

The apartment retains the unique character of the Old Town with oak panelled walls and parquet flooring, mixed with family portraits, antiques and works of art, but also all the modern comforts of a home.

It is on the fourth floor and is reached by a spiral staircase (76 steps in all!) For our American cousins that's a walkup :-)
There is no elevator.
The apartment is South facing and full of light by day.

The hall has a cupboard to hang clothes/store shoes etc. There is also an ironing board/iron and a hair dryer kept here as well.

The bathroom has a bath and a shower, there is always hot water and plenty of towels for you to have.

Then through the main door off the hall, is the open plan living space. Five full height original Georgian sash windows face you as you walk into the space. Floor to ceiling book cases and a large period fireplace with French empire over-mantle mirror.

I don't own a TV.

But there is free wifi throughout the apartment, also a big collection of fiction/history/cookery/poetry/art/design books to while away the time with and I have a music/radio player with an eclectic choice of C.Ds. Plus cards and board games.

A large kitchen space with character and all the modern cons - toaster, washing machine, fridge and freezer, dishwasher, oven, kettle, induction hob etc. However I don't own a microwave.

I hate staying in apartments on holiday where there aren't even any basics to cook with like salt and olive oil, so the kitchen is stocked with all the usual larder fare to help yourself to if you're cooking in. Plus coffee and all sorts of teas. I also have an honesty bar if you want to finish off with a drink or two after a long day of walking around town.

By the windows is the generous dining space with oak dinning table and six chairs.

The bed is a unique 'bedbox chamber' made from architectural salvaged fitted Scottish 18th/19th century carved oak. A floor to ceiling hidden panelled door lets you into this cosy space with reading lights on the headboard and it is fitted out with a British king size mattress - width 150cm and length 200cm, white cotton sheets, pillows and duvet. Mary Queen of Scots would feel quite at home sleeping in it!

The living room area of the apartment is tucked at the West side of the room and has two good size sofas, reading lamps and is perfect to socialize and also have quiet time with a good book.

Interaction with guests

I should be able to meet you in person to let you in, show you the apartment and answer any questions. Sometimes, due to your arrival time and what I'm up to, I wont be able to meet you personally and so will arrange to leave keys at the building to collect. You can contact me by phone or on airbnb at anytime during your stay.

Check-in is usually any time after 1pm and check-out times are 11am. However I'm flexible and I will try and accommodate your schedule whenever possible. So with that in mind it's really helpful to know your travel plans so please let me know what time you intend to arrive and depart and by what method of transport when you book.

The neighbourhood

The old town is beautfuil and historic. It's busy all year round with the crowds mostly at there height in the festival in August. James Court is a collection of buildings mixed together on the Lawnmarket.

Getting around

You can get to Edinburgh by plane,train,car.

It's a city made for walking, but if you want there is a very good public travel system.

Buses cost £1.60 per journey of £4.00 for day ticket.

Taxis are easy to wave down and book, they are expensive for short journeys but very practical if you need to get across town in a hurry.

If you bring a car (which I'd advise strongly against if you can help it!) these are the options...

Parking in the Old Town of Edinburgh is problematic, as there is no direct free parking as its so small and historic. What spaces you'd find are for residents or pay by the hour spaces. There is no parking on the royal mile/near the castle or anywhere very close to my apartment.

However there is parking on Chambers Street and Johnstone Terrrace which is a short walk from James Court. But you can only park there for a maximum of four hours and it's currently £2.60 an hour. It is however free to park there between 6.30pm and 8.30am every day and on Sunday it's free all day.

If your looking for something more long term and without to much hassle there is also free parking on the streets of Leith for example Albert Street and also in Stockbridge...... if you can find a space as you drive around. Then it's a case of either getting a bus to and from your car or walking between it and James Court.

There is a car park at Waverley train station which is about a 15 min walk from the apartment which costs £19.00 a day to leave your car for 24 hours and the round the clock access.

There is also a great free park and ride scheme run by the council. Where you can park your car outside the city and then get a bus into the city for £1.60 (they do not give change so have the right money).

There is a tram from the airport which costs £5 (£8.50 return) and you would get off at princes street and walk up the Mound on to the Royal Mile and my apartment.

The shuttle airport bus costs £4.50 (£7.50 return) and you would get off outside Waverley train station and walk up Market street, on to the Royal Mile.

If your looking into hiring a car so you can escape into the countryside for the day. There are a number of car hire business in Edinburgh that allow you to do day hire.

Please make sure you have read the full description of my home, there is no lift and it's on the fourth floor, I don't own a TV. The bed is in a floor to ceiling box, with a door. Please keep music noise levels down after 10:30pm to respect the neighnbours, the building has some long term residents and other holiday guests.

It's my home so please respect the flat as if it were your own. This is not a "party flat" I trust the only people there are the guests booking.

Things break and get damaged its a fact of life, I'm understanding to these things, so please tell me before you leave or straight after so we can sort it out before it goes straight to the 'deposit' stage.

Its a small flat and there are lots of pubs and clubs around, of which I can tell you which are the better ones! so please no Parties or "Back to my house!" as noise travels in the building.

There is no smoking in the flat - and the fireplace chimmey has not been swept, so please dont attempt to light a fire in case the chimmey breast catchers fire or the soot fall's down and floods the living space.

Remeber to blow the candles out if you use them before you head out or go to bed. This is the most common cause of house fires in Edinburgh.

We loved staying at Calim's flat. It is beautifully decorated, centrally located (the castle is so close!) and Calim provided us with lots of information about the area and some extras we didn't expect, like a freshly baked loaf of bread. We would recommend Calim's place to anyone looking for an authentic stay in Edinburgh. It was perfect.

Calim is very nice and friendly. We didn't get a chance to meet him since he is in Athens. But he contacted us days before we arrived at Edinburgh. And he asked his friend Ted to help us check in. The apartment is on the Royal Mile, 5 minutes' walk to the castle. Definitely great location. We love the bed in the book shelf, very special and cozy. Can't feel the day comes sleeping on it. And there are lots of books in the apartment. It rains a lot in Edinburgh, staying in the apartment, having tea and reading a book, is what we think holiday is. Oh the only problem might be the stairs. The apartment is on the 4th floor without elevator.

Calim has certainly earned the designation of super host! Everything was spotless and the flat was beyond perfect for our trip. It is in the most central location of old town and his recommendations are so helpful. The amenities in the flat are fabulous and made us feel right at home. The bed is incredibly comfortable and the quirky layout of the "bed-room" is fun and memorable. We'll definitely be planning a trip back in the near future! We loved Edinburgh and Calim's flat made the quick trip such a great experience.

Calim is an absolute brilliant host! The desciption of the apartment and amenities is 100% accurate, but the space is even better than the photos. Since it's very central, many popular tourist destinations are within a 15 minute walk. Did I say the space is beautiful? The library alone will make you want to stay for a month! When we arrived exhausted, we were so appreciative of the honesty bar and basics in the kitchen....we really felt welcomed. This place is hands down brilliant.

Thanks so much to Calim for such a wonderful stay! The apartment is stunning, right on the royal mile with amazing views. It was very spacious and perfect for traveling with our 11 month old. The kitchen is very well equipped, just like one at home. We so enjoyed the added touches- bread with butter and jam for breakfast, and unique Scottish beer in the afternoons. We highly recommend Calim's flat!

This is by far the nicest Airbnb I've ever stayed in. There's no other way to put it. The location is walking distance from the train station, and walking distance to every thing you could possibly want to do and see along he royal mile in Edinburgh. That part of town can get quite busy, but up in Calim's flat we were able to get a quiet break from the crowds on the weekends. The flat itself is beautiful. The interior suits the historic area it's in. We had all the amenities we could ask for, and Calim even added some personal touches since it was my birthday. If we come back through Edinburgh, we'll have to time our trip with Calims availability because I'm not sure we'd want to stay anywhere else.

This is, by far, the nicest place I've ever had the pleasure to stay. Looking down on the Royal Mile, this graciously appointed flat is perfect for the traveler who enjoys culture without being stuffy. The place abounds with touches that enhance your comfort—it's as if a friend has invited you to stay at their place. Calim, the host, is communicative and helpful. As far as I can tell, there are no downsides to this fabulous apartment [except perhaps the stair climb, which I've come to almost like because it is the price you have to pay for the fabulous view.
