This area is really a must-see one in the capital of Cuba. Thanks in part to the Cuba isolation through the years, buildings remain original, with almost no sign of the XXI Century, so the colonial style prevails all around the city. The largest number of museums are precisely located nearby, such as Rum Museum, Fine Arts Museum, Revolution Museum, the Natural Science Museum, the Capitol and so on. The Cathedral is perhaps the most emblematic center, from where you can appreciate the colonial architecture while enjoying a drink and some fresh air. Similarly, there are equivalent squares entirely enjoyable, like Plaza de Armas, Plaza Vieja or Plaza de San Francisco de Asís. In the latter, classical music can be listened since they offer concerts very often. All this places are surrounded by bars and also craft markets.
On the other hand, Obispo street is a very fashionable one, so if you want to see the combination of a huge amount of locals and tourists at once, head for it!
The Malecon, separating the old city from the sea, is the daily road for people to relax and watch the magnificent blue of the Caribbean, fishing and running, but at night, it becomes the meeting place for many Cubans looking for fun, so it´s very common to meet locals singing, playing guitars, drinking or just chatting.
Not too far away from Old Havana -about 20 blocks- is the Casa de la Musica, which offers a nice opportunity to dance the cuban most practiced dance: Salsa. This is not the only one, but certainly the most popular.
For those interested in getting fit or enjoying swimming pools, there are also some hotels such as Sevilla Hotel, Telegrafo Hotel, Santa Isabel Hotel ,etc., that offer this services for a small fee.
As for restaurants, the number of high quality ones is increasingly swiftly, thanks to the recent opening to the private sector and for the sake of the most challenging visitors.
Finally, in case the beach is required, which may perfectly suits given the high temperatures , there´s a worthwhile bus departing from The Capitol that can take you to the eastern beaches of Havana, which are not Varadero, but are very nice as well, and just 18 kms away from the very center of Havana (The Capitol).
I am a friendly woman who likes living in family above all. I like arts very much, not only Ballet which I studied for 9 years, but also music, visual arts and of course the cinema. My husband and I are happily married in part thanks to a similar life motto. We lived in Ecuador for two years and enjoyed interacting with such an old and rich culture. We enjoy making people feel happy and give them a bit more than what they expect from us.
