About this listing

The Hut is modelled on a shepherds hut with rustic wood interiors, a cosy fire, It is sited in a peaceful, rural environment with stunning views of all three volcanoes of the Tongariro National Park. An ideal base for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

The space

Our smaller accommodation unit is The Hut. It has stunning views of all three volcanoes (Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu). It is set in a peaceful, rural environment but is still just minutes from the cafés, bars and shops, of National Park Village.

The Hut is styled like a back country shepherds' hut, with one main room and an attached bathroom. It sleeps two in comfort, with a maximum of four. On arrival, your beds will already be made, with linen and towels supplied.

A wood-stove warmly heats The Hut. The stove can also be used for cooking, although The Hut also has a full-sized oven, microwave, fridge and a barbeque on the deck. All firewood is supplied (though there is a surcharge for firewood in summer).

We have two old mountain bikes with helmets which are available for your use.

The Hut is appointed to make the most of the spectacular views of the surrounding farmland, bush and volcanoes. You can relax on the deck, kick back with a drink and a book and ponder if you ever need to return home. Soak up the view, or soak in the bush bath, watch for the low-flying wood pigeon and then top up that drink … before retiring inside for a warm romantic night in.

When you book The Hut, you will be booking a unique and memorable experience.

Guest access

You may wander around the garden, the farm to see the cows and sheep, or explore the bush walk down to the mountain stream across the road.

Interaction with guests

When you arrive just move in, there is no need to come to the main house to check in as we may be busy on the farm. We will come and greet you later and offer any advice on things to do in the area if you require recommendations.

Other things to note

The Hut is designed for two people to enjoy. If you are happy to share your living space with others then it can work for more. We do not service The Hut daily. We have some mountain bikes you can use for free.

Very scenic, rustic, clean & comfy. The weather was less than perfect, so we enjoyed a day in the Hut, listening to music - there's a nice little stereo in there - catching up on communications - decent WIFI - and the fire! A lovely little wood stove that kept us nice and toasty during our cold weather stay. Will def. return when we pass this way again.

The Hut was truly a very unique and magical experience. Tim's farm is beautiful and the animals are great to observe. The Hut is beautifully decorated and once you get the fire going it's extremely cozy and all your cabin retreat dreams come true. Tim was a delightful host and gave us very helpful tips about the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The location is also very near the entrance to the crossing as well as the nearby town. Would highly recommend this place to anyone!

We had a wonderful stay in Raurimu at Tim's Hut. The place was lovely and cosy and Tim had the fire going for us as promised when we got there. He was there to greet us and was extremely helpful and accommodating. We will absolutely stay at the Hut again the next time we go down!

Ewan & Tim User ProfileEwan & Tim is a superhost.

Having travelled extensively around the world we have learned the importance and value of friendly staffing. We run our own accommodation business, Wood Pigeon Lodge, on our 40 acre property with this in mind.
We also have about twenty cows and 50 sheep grazing our land. Tim tends to the accomodation and animals while Ewan is a local school teacher, who helps out when he is not busy teaching (in the holidays).
We bought this land in 1998 when it was just a few paddocks and a hay barn. Together we have built our house and accommodation into what it is today.
We are both keen skiers and love living off the land; we have a large vegetable garden, orchard and berry orchard. We are both enthusiastic gardeners and have enjoyed landscaping and maintaining the surrounding grounds.
We regularly host Wwoofers from overseas, enjoying the cultural exchange that this provides. We continue to love to travel ourselves, often for part of a northern hemisphere ski season. We enjoy meeting people from around the world, and sharing our little patch of paradise.
