Salida is THE place to ramp up your adventure meter and blow the gauge far off the high end of the fun scale. Do you want to zip-line, snowmobile, horseback ride, ski or snowboard, soak in a hot spring or absorb an art gallery, eat at a great restaurant, drink a fabulous local wine, beer or distilled liquor, go 4 wheeling or ATVing, visit a ghost town, go whitewater rafting or kayaking, rock and gem hunt, cycle or mountain bike, camp, golf, or fish, climb a 14'er, hike or hunt, listen to music outdoors or go to a fabulous festival? Then High Country Heaven is THE place to be.

Salida, Colorado's largest Historic District, is a close-knit, friendly community that wholly embraces energetic, peaceful, laid back lifestyles. The beautiful & charming town of 5500 people is a short distance from the famed Rainbow Hiking Trail; offers world class mountain biking trails (URL HIDDEN) has been featured on HGTV as the "Town that Decorates an Entire Mountain;" and is called "The Little Soho of the West" because of it's prolific, nationally acclaimed artists/galleries and large number of year-round art events.

Each June, the largest whitewater rafting festival in the country, FIBArk (short for First In Boating on The Arkansas), begins on the Tuesday before Father's Day. World champion kayakers compete during 6 days of various competitions, daily/nightly free live music is offered and a fun, festival atmosphere abounds. In the past, New Belgium/Fat Tire has sponsored the event but now, a terrific local brewery, The Eddyline, is the key FIBArk sponsor. Obviously, great beer selections are guaranteed. The most popular and funniest FIBArk event is the Hooligan Race (5:30 pm on the Saturday before Father's Day) where contestant teams construct theme rafts from items such as bales of hay, empty kegs, tires, floats, sofas, & bath tubs then try to navigate over rapids and under the F Street Bridge. Hollering, hooting, and hysteria richly fill the air when rafts pass through the Boat Ramp Rapids as contestants jump for money strung high across the Arkansas. Most rafts eject people, break apart, or completely flip over! The Hooligan Race is a must see event in your life.

Our County enjoys over 330 days of sunshine annually; has the most 14,000+ ft. peaks concentrated into the smallest geographical area in the USA; is 30 minutes from the Continental Divide/Monarch Pass; has numerous, easy to reach hot springs; and boasts of having the most rafted stretch of any river in the United States (Arkansas River). In addition, Chaffee County is home to the most craft microbreweries, wineries & distilleries per capita in the United States and has numerous high quality gems/minerals on display at the Smithsonian Institute. Salida is also close to two National Parks which make for great day trips: The Great Dunes National Park and Black Canyon at the Gunnison National Park. Other stellar sites include the ghost towns of Turret and St. Elmo, a drive along Aspen Ridge especially in the fall, ziplining in Big Horn Sheep Canyon, hiking/biking/gondola-ing along the Continental Divide, visiting the awesome Royal Gorge & driving to Leadville, the highest town in America at 10,200 ft.

We cordially invite you to come stay at High Country Heaven and help yourself to a light breakfast of tea, coffee & organic oatmeal as well as plenty of clean towels and linens, hair dryers, iron/ironing board, and local maps/brochures. As hosts, we will be happy to provide information on places to visit and where to rent bikes, horses, snowmobiles, skis, ATV's, Jeeps, etc. If there is anything we can help you with, please ask. If you haven't experienced the unique community that is Salida in the Heart of the beautiful Rocky Mountains, you need to visit soon.

Hi there.
Thanks for viewing our special slice of mountain paradise.

We respectfully request that you treat our home as if it is your own. In other words, please leave it as you found it, keep the kitchen clean, clean up after yourself, put things back where you found them, notify us if anything is not to your liking or seems amiss, etc., don't invite strangers inside, and close/lock the door when you leave.

Please strip the beds of sheets and pillowcases and put them in the laundry basket. It would help if you could put a load of towels to wash/dry before you left. THANKS!!

We're very green & environmentally minded and would request that you please recycle, compost, and be smart about energy usage.

Sorry, smoking is not allowed in our house.

Pets must be approved upon request, are NOT allowed on furniture or on beds and may require a deposit.

You are most welcome to:

Everything was perfect! This home is located only 5 minutes from downtown Salida, but you feel as if you are in the middle of nowhere. Lisa has thought of absolutely everything, and things you didn't know you might need. Beautifully decorated, this place is in top notch condition. Very relaxing and rustic yet luxurious at the same time. We hope to come here again very soon!

High Country Heaven is beautiful. It is like half a mile from downtown, but the home is placed so perfectly on their property that it feels like you are hidden in the mountains. All of the views are amazing and the home's rustic design elements make it feel so comfortable. We talked constantly about how we wish homes were built this way in our hometown. Lastly, there is a trailhead about 100 yards from HCH with a BLM trail network. My wife and I went trail running every morning and took in the views. Just great.

This property is positioned to give you amazing views of the mountains around Salida. Secluded, quiet on the edge of Salida. Overall, a very nice property. I must point out though that there are only 2 bathrooms (2 toilets and 2 showers/tub) and the listing states 2.5 bathrooms. Also, the cedar/pine plank flooring on the second floor and stairs are extremely noisy when you walk on them. If your group doesn't all get up at the same time, the early risers are challenged to walk quietly enough to not awake everyone else.

Response from Lisa:
Thank you for the review, Wade. I'm so glad you enjoyed the views at High Country Heaven. They are spectacular. In terms of the 2.5 bathrooms, I can understand your confusion. Realtors don't even know how to define the number of bathrooms at High Country Heaven. The Airbnb description of the bathrooms is very clearly stated in the second paragraph: 2.5 bathrooms (3 sinks/3 vanities, 1 shower, 1 shower/tub combo, 1 jetted tub, 2 toilets). In your review, you missed listing the jetted tub - there are, in fact, 3 individual places to shower or bathe. 3 sinks, 3 places to shower or bathe and 2 toilets amount to more than 2 bathrooms especially when the downstairs bathroom suite has a door in between the toilet/sink and the shower/jetted tub/sink so 2 people can use each part of the bathroom in complete privacy.

My husband & I are 45 & 50 respectively and are retired with no children. We trek to savor tasty microbrews, enjoy frequent doses of Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, and expose ourselves to new opportunities that allow us to give and learn. When we aren't traveling, we volunteer in our community and dog/cat sit (pro bono) for friends.

We aggressively practice an organic, active, and environmentally conscientious lifestyle that's filled with good karma and lots of pay-it-forwards. We're super easy guests and generous hosts.
