This apartment is on the border of Temescal and Lower Rockridge. Walkscore of 91, 1 Block to Kingfish Pub, 2 Blocks to Bakesale Betty's, Cholita Linda, Dona Tomas, Pizzaiolo, and all of Temescal good eats. Biker's Paradise score of 95, means you can bike to the Rockridge Bart in 6 minutes or walk in 15! 11 miles to San Francisco = 20-30 minute drive or public transportation!

The space

A 1 bedroom, 1 bath, 700 SF, on the top floor of the building (2 stories, about 25 steps up to apartment, no elevator/lift). There is a comfortable bedroom with a real queen bed, some dressers and a small but functional desk area. The closets are quirky and are actually located in the living room. The building is old so walls are a bit thin and you can hear cars outside, neighbors, and also smell cooking and incense lighting from time to time. We have one heater and it's an old furnace heater located in the living room only. (The bedroom is right next to the living room.) There is no central heat or air conditioning. We have extra blankets if you get cold. We also have a ceramic wall heater in the bedroom for those extra cold nights in the Bay Area (which are kinda rare), but we want you to be comfortable!

Questions about safety: Lots of guests inquire about SAFETY. Because it's a subjective feeling and comfort levels vary greatly from person to person, we'd recommend reading our reviews to see if it would be a good fit for you/your family.

Oakland is an urban and diverse city. The Temescal/Lower Rockridge District is comprised of diverse working class families and young professionals. We are in an urban city so we always recommend using city-street smarts and being aware of your surroundings.

Guest access

Access by combination lock box. The unit is on the 2nd floor in the back of the building. It is a top unit so no one is above you and there are no shared walls. Laundromat (2 blocks away), or wash and fold are both nearby.

Loss of keys will require the change all sets of locks and a $250 fee will be applied. Lock out fee to be let into the apartment is $100.

Interaction with guests

Please always let us know when you have issues that arise so that we can do our best to accommodate and ensure you have a great stay! Otherwise, we are happy giving our guests as much privacy as they need.

Please understand that you are staying in an older apartment and someone's home. From time to time, things come up. With that being said, as our house guests, we would appreciate that you always let us know of any sort of issues so that we can find a solution. We never want you to suffer in silence but also want you to understand that things like this do happen and so in order to ensure your entire stay is comfortable, please LET US KNOW when it happens.

Other things to note

Please inquire before booking.
We welcome long and short-term stays so even if our calendar isn't open for future months, please send us a message to inquire!

The apartment is adjacent to a busy street so expect some city, urban noise, but really if you're okay with white noise, that's what it is.

Jennifer's place is a treat. It's in a trendy area in Oakland, not to far from grocery stores, cafes and restaurants. The apartment itself is designed beautifully and is an ideal pied a terre for a business trip or a few days away. Jennifer was great to communicate with and the check-in/check-out process was extremely straightforward, an added bonus in my book!

What can I say. One of Airbnb's best hosts. Jen & Jon helped make my stay so enjoyable. They provided me recommendations throughout the week, left me beers on my last night and really went out of their way to make my trip extra special. The location is great, right next to some fantastic eateries. Try Dona Tomas for authentic Mexican food a few minutes walk away. The apartment wasn't lovely and the bed is to die for! That might be a problem for some as I did not want to get out of it. Silky soft sheets it was amazing. All the neighbours were friendly and all said hello to me. The apartment is right next to a gas station for those emergency items. At night time is is really really quiet and I had no trouble sleeping. As you can probably tell I would recommend this place to all and I can't wait to go back. Thanks Jen & Jon. Tip; there is a dry cleaners over the road but if you don't mind waiting 30 mins and want a good price walk to Temescal Dry Cleaners a bit further down.

This is not a fake part of Oakland. It's rowdy there are a lot of people out at all parts of the hour and it doesn't feel safe with the neighbors. You are also right next to a gas station and amain very busy road. Also if you Or someone who likes to cook you might want to bring your own cookware and they will not be much of anything there for spices or herbs. The cookware is old and outdated and there's nothing to store your food.

Response from Jennifer:
Abby's review states things that we're very clear about in our description so it may be that she didn't read through our reviews and bookings before choosing to stay at our apartment. In her comments and communications to us she seems uncomfortable with our neighbors who are African Americans.

The place is a nice clean & bright apt in an older oakland building. The owner did a good job rennovating the place. It is only a few blocks to temescal and its fine restaurants. But temescal is still an up and coming neighborhood.

My name is Jennifer and I'm an Oakland native. If you're curious about all the comings and goings of Oakland and San Francisco, I would be happy to guide you in your desired direction of interests. I don't consider myself a foodie, but I love to eat - lots of different types of food. From random trucks, shacks in what some would say are dodgy neighborhoods, someone's grandmother's kitchen, to places where I have to be slightly presentable. I love being able to share what I love and know about the city I grew up in. Having me as a host means that you have some of the comforts of a home and some!
