The space

A spacious beachfront estate awaits you on beautiful Waimanalo beach. Get away from the noise and the crowds and enjoy a relaxing vacation at Ka Malu Niu, which is Hawaiian for "under the shade of the coconut trees." This 4 bedroom, 4.5 bath estate is located within a coconut grove between the mountains and the ocean. Enjoy unbeatable ocean views from the picture windows that line the living room, dining room, and upstairs bedroom, while a fully equipped kitchen looks out on the lush Ko'olau Mountain Range to one side, and the ocean to the other. Plentiful windows and island breezes keep the house cool and well ventilated year-round, without need for air conditioning.

All bedrooms offer gorgeous ocean views as well. Take in the world-famous Waimanalo sunrise without leaving the comfort of your bed. Fall asleep to the gentle sound of the waves and the wind rustling through the coconut trees from any room in the house. Enjoy stargazing on the beach, or stay in and enjoy the reflection of the moonlight on the water from your bed.

The property includes a coconut grove in the spacious front yard, a paved BBQ area, and direct access to the beach. Savor ocean views and the island breeze from your private second-story lanai, accessible directly from the living room. Waimanalo beach is also perfect for boogie boarding, a favorite pastime of local children, and you'll find plenty of boogie boards in the garage for your enjoyment.

Regarding WEDDINGS: We receive many requests to use our estate as a wedding venue. We do not have a permit to conduct weddings at our estate. We are also located within a quiet residential neighborhood where this would be a significant disturbance to our neighbors, even if we had a permit. We do not allow weddings of any size under any circumstances.

Guest access

Enjoy a private getaway - the entire property is yours for the duration of your stay. The house is equipped with a keyless entry system which will allow you the luxury of entering anytime after your check-in time. Take the scenic drive to the property and enjoy as many stops as you wish along the way! There is no designated time at which you need to arrive as you may check-in whenever you wish. The house includes a private driveway with a two-car garage. Additional cars may be parked along the driveway. Guests will have access to the house through the main entrance as well as the garage. Beach entry gates are located on both sides of the house. Exit the property and walk right out to the beach!

Please note that the grassy area behind the house is actually an extension of the beach, and is therefore public property. This is true for all the properties along the beach, although some owners have placed personal items in the public space. Feel free to use the area for ball play, lounging, or anything else you would do in a public park.

We allow guests to enjoy their privacy, as if this were your own home. We are, however, available via phone, email, or text throughout your stay to answer any questions you may have. We are happy to provide restaurant recommendations, suggestions for family-friendly activities in the area, and to help in event of emergencies. Please know that we live and work full-time in downtown Honolulu, and therefore may not be able to respond immediately. We will, however, do our best to be available to you. In general, our guests find that the property has everything they need to enjoy their stay.

The neighbourhood

Waimanalo is where the cars move slow and the island breezes blow - truly the place to get away from it all. Enjoy a sleepy, beachside community of local residents with very few tourists. You'll find small convenience stores and restaurants only a few blocks away, including a 7-11, a McDonald's, and a few local favorites: Serg's Mexican Kitchen, Keneke's BBQ (which also serves up local style - read "large" - shave ice!), Ono Steaks & Shrimp Shack, Hawaiian Island Cafe, 'Ai Love Nalo vegan restaurant and Waimanalo Market Co-op. Although Waimanalo is secluded, it's only a 10 minute drive from Kailua town, with its multitude of restaurants, boutiques, and other conveniences, including a Whole Foods and Target. It is also only 15 minutes from the Costco in Hawaii Kai, and the additional restaurants and shops in that area.

Families and snorkelers alike will be happy to know that Waimanalo is also home to world-famous Hanauma Bay, where thousands of brightly colored tropical fish swim around our corals to the delight of generations of children and adults.

For an up-close marine life experience, drive 10 minutes up the highway to Sea Life Park. Swim with dolphins, sea lions, sting rays, or even sharks! See the world's only wholphin, enjoy a top-rated Hawaiian luau, enjoy dolphin and sea lion shows, touch sea urchins, learn about penguins, and feed sea turtles all in one day!

The Honolulu Polo Club plays on Sunday afternoons at 3 pm during the summer and fall months (May through October) at the polo fields which are located within walking distance of the house. Entrance is $5/adult, and free for military and kids 12 and under! If you've never seen a polo game before, you are in for a good time, and there are even free brochures about how to watch the game. The polo club also offers lessons for riders of all ages and ability levels.

Getting around

Rental car is the best way to get around Oahu generally, and certainly to Waimanalo, as it is a 30 minute drive from Honolulu International Airport. The public bus also stops on the main road.

Other things to note

WE HAVE MADE SOME UPDATES THAT ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE PHOTOS. We will update with new photos as soon as we have an opening between guests to take new photos. We have:
1) installed a front gate to increase security and privacy
2) replaced all furniture in the living room with a new sofa set, coffee table and 60" HDTV
3) removed the upper cabinets in the kitchen to grant the kitchen a sweeping ocean view as well.
4) installed flat screen TV's in all bedrooms. All TV's are HDTV's except in the Master bedroom, which now has the flat screen TV that was in the living room. All TV's are equipped with cable, Netflix and DVD players.

Price includes all taxes; AirBnB guest fees are additional and will display upon checkout. Taxes include Hawaii State General Excise Tax (4.712%) and Transient Accommodation Tax (9.25%).

Early check-in and late check-out requests are subject to availability and must be pre-approved. For example, if we do not have another guest checking in the same day you are checking out, we may honor a late check-out request. Please contact us in advance to inquire about these options.

Also, please note that if you are requesting to check-in on a date when we have another guest checking out, you will be required to check-in late (at or after 6 pm). Similarly, you will be required to check-out early (at or before 9 am) if we have another guest checking in the day you are checking out. This is due to the fact that our house is quite large and takes a significant amount of time to clean between guests. We appreciate your understanding of this policy as it allows us to adequately prepare our home for you or for the next guest.

Chloe was a great host - responsive and thorough. The house is on a great beach. Primarily locals, not crowded, great waves for boogie boarding with a gaggle of kids ages 7 - 12. There is great poke just up the street. Ok Mexican, shaved ice and shrimp shack in the same strip. The neighborhood was great during the day but became a little sketchy at night - some colorful characters around and we were advised to keep cars in the garage, etc. This security issue means that no doors facing the ocean are currently operable which was a bit of a bummer initially but we quickly got used to walking around the front of the house to the beach. House is well stocked - we cooked most meals and it had everything we needed. There are plenty of towels, boogie boards, snorkeling gear, etc for outdoor play and cards and board games for indoor fun. Good house for an off the beaten path get away.

This is a beautiful home located right near the water and you will wake up every morning with the most beautiful view. The house is incredibly well equipped with everything you might possibly need. There are lots of towels and linens are soft and comfortable I just can't say enough about how wonderful it was for us to stay here for a week. Mahalo Chloe!

We absolutely loved our stay at Under The Palms. The house was clean and spacious. The view spectacular! Chloe called to check on us and was attentive to our few needs. I want to start by saying how fabulous the location was. The pictures on Airbnb do not do the ocean or beach justice. The water was an amazing turquoise and the sand was nice and soft. To understand some of my comments, let me describe our group. My wife's parents, ages 85 and 91, my wife's sister and her two boys, ages 21 and 18. We were doing a family vacation with a highlight of taking her father, a WWII Navy veteran to Pearl Harbor for the first time. Under the Palms is as described - we had plenty of bedroom and bathroom space. The ocean view from the large glass windows was spectacular. The location is very convenient and it was easy to get anywhere on the island. We made several trips into Honolulu, to check out Waikiki, a dive trip and to meet our tour bus for Pearl Harbor. Easy trips, about 30 to 40 minutes without any real traffic problems. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind - the common areas are the kitchen with a table that seats 8 fairly comfortably, the lanai (used frequently) and one of the sleeping areas with a TV. These areas are upstairs, so not easily accessible by the elderly members of our party. The description on Airbnb clearly calls out that there is no AC and we happened to pick a week where the humidity was quite high and being from Phoenix, we really don't know what humidity is. The house was warm and humid for our stay - the floor fans in each sleeping area were a necessity. One last thing, the two upstairs sleeping areas are on either side of the kitchen and the stairs come up into the sleeping areas. Need to keep that in mind when deciding who sleeps where and having our 18 year old pick the sleeping area with the TV put that off limits the two mornings we hung out at the place. I don't want to leave a negative impression. What I called out above are just things to keep in mind. If we have a chance to visit Oahu again, I would consider booking Under the Palms again. The house was clean and well stocked. We used the gas grill two nights to make dinner and enjoyed breakfast and our coffee on the lanai. The beds were very comfortable, no complaints made by anyone. I want to thank Chloe for the opportunity to stay at Under the Palms. We happened to arrive about 10 minutes early and were given a private tour by the housekeeper (her name escapes me). I would highly recommend you check this place out if your plans include Oahu.

I am so glad you also found our home convenient enough for your trip to Pearl Harbor - how meaningful for you! I am sorry that the living areas were difficult to access for the elderly members of your party. When we remodeled the house, we decided to place the common areas upstairs because the view is more beautiful upstairs than downstairs, and wanted everyone to enjoy the view together. There is a handrail provided to increase accessibility to the upstairs common areas. I am so sorry about the heat and humidity at the house - this year, we have seen unusually high temperatures in Hawaii due to it being an El Nino year, although the humidity is generally quite high due to being on an island. We have taken your feedback into consideration and are working with professionals to see what we can do to increase the comfort level for our guests. It is difficult as the house was not built for AC given that it is usually quite cool, but we will see what we can do. We are also putting some thought into how we can address the other concerns you raised as well (TVs, stairs into the upstairs bedroom, etc.). We hope that you will visit us again and will find our home improved! Chloe

Overall, the home was great. Positives: incredible location on a gorgeous beach, the views of the beach from the second floor are incredible, front yard is very private and secure, and a lot of extra items at the home for use on the beach. Negatives: no air conditioning (only fans), the home itself has some wear and tear due to the proximity to the seawater, there are only really three private bedrooms (not four) and two extra open rooms that can be used for sleeping, and there is a lack of privacy in the backyard (there is a public access pathway right next to the house, but no hedging to prevent people from walking and laying on the backyard). Overall, the location is so great, that if A/C was added, my rating would have been 5/5 stars.
