Our experience at Pastel was interesting for lack of a better word. On our arrival it was clearly evident the room had not been cleaned. The room was smelly and stuffy, the linen dirty and stained, the bathroom had hair and dust on the floor, the refrigerator had a foul odor with spillage on the inside and outside on the floor. The shower is horrific. In his absence the Dennis provided us with the excuse that "due to half days holidays and guests leaving later than expected the staff battled to keep up with the normal cleaning". We agreed with Austin (the caretaker ) to go for a drink while he cleaned up the room. The lack of cleanliness is award winning, after our room was cleaned we spotted two spiderwebs and dead bugs in the room which we purposely did not remove to see if they would be removed, they remained there until we took it upon ourselves to clean and dust the room. The shower is disgusting the entire week we had a a string of dirty residue hang from the upper shower frame. The floor is stained and dirty. The inserts and grooves in the shower frames are filled with filth and black residue. When we had to use the shower we showered with as with slops but preferred driving to a virgin active to shower. The linen is old dirty and stained. We did not use the "Kitchen" due to the lack of cleanliness and the untidiness. There are better options for the same price in the area .We were lucky to find alternative accommodation in the area for two nights. The rate was cheaper, a stone throw from Florida road and absolutely amazing.Take the time to look around there is better. The cottages are close to Florida road, which provides a welcomed distraction from the disaster that is Pastel cottages. The best part of our stay at Pastel was meeting Austin, great guy.

At Pastel cottages we have a good review rate 95+ %. To avoid miscommunications my phone and staff contact details were given to guests whom are invited to communicate at any time. As this review is the worst 1% we need to clarify facts; I communicated directions and contact details. The guest what'sapped me on their arrival. In my absence from Durban during their whole stay Austin stood in for me and replied the guests are happy with the room when they signed in. About an hour the guest advised they were going out and the room was not clean. I had been previously notified by Staff all the previous guests had departed later than normal on this Boxing day so merely offered this to the guest as a possible reason and that the room would be attended to. I instructed Austin and Zamo to "wash walls remop floors and spray with room freshner" to which he replied "already started that". On their return Austin advised that they were "impressed". It is noted the guest did stay the full stay and departed the day after new year 2nd Jan however neither Austin nor I were notified of any unhappiness. On my return to Durban we arranged for respraying of rooms and garden area to prevent any centipeds (small shongolulus) entering the room. We note we are the cheapest in the area having been awarded the certificate by Sleeping out as most cost effective. Although we don't have details of the other "cheaper" cottages we further note the guest could not get a cheaper rate available over the prime Christmas to New year period and our rate after new year does return to our normal cost effective out of season rate. We are thrilled that the guest found Austin to be a great guy but for the love of me battle with why they did not advise him or contact me either directly or through the private feedback through airbnb.

Pastel was very nice and helpful, making my stay very comfortable..the place was clean and I loved it,especially cos I didn't have to worry about cleaning since the cleaning lady would come in to clean everyday. The WiFi was a hurdle, had to wake up and go to the internet cafe in town to get my work done. The cottage is comfy and I loved it

Response from Pastel Bnb:
Hi Lebo . Many thanks for the positive feedback. For years both pastel guest house musgrave and pastel cottages morningside have had good wifi service except for a very slow service last week at pastel cottages. Between telkom and mweb they have been driving me crazy, each blaming the other and not finding the problem. Nevertheless I have given notice today the 27th June and ordered super fast LTE 3G internet. Crossing fingers.

Dennis was a lovely host and made me feel welcome from the start! The room was clean and offered such great value for money - very comfy bed, ensuite, TV, aircon and wifi. I would definitely recommend it to friends. It was exactly what I needed for my short stay.

We had a great stay !! Communication was great , and the unit was clean and comfortable. We were close to lots of restaurants and parks, and a quick drive to he beaches. We would stay here again for sure if ever back in Durban.

We found the accommodation as it was described and we were welcomed by the owner who showed us our unit. But it seemed we weren't expected and it became clear that the unit had not been serviced prior to our arrival. Our view is that the oversight may be an isolated instance.

Response from Pastel Bnb:
Derek was quite correct, that the bedside table was an isolated instance. It is true due to the bus strikes and rioting I was unable to collect staff. I did explain to Derek that I had personally washed and changed linen for 8 rooms so feeling a bit like a hare in the spotlight. Unfortunately our friendly discussions was about everything but the side table / coffee facilities. If mentioned It would have been sorted immediately. We regret Derek felt awkward however merely wanted to clarify his air bnb statement "he was attending functions on successive nights" however only booked 1 night? Besides needing to describe key letterbox return method should they leave early in the morning or being there on departure, it was never intended to make them feel awkward and perhaps misinterpreted.

Pastel guest house is a 4 bedroomed 110 year house converted to be run by my lovely wife as her health precluded her from continuing working in the high powered world of corporate finance. I soon discovered I had an affinity and enjoyed working in the hospitality industry myself and continue to play an active role. I enjoy the friendliness and warmth from visitors whom return to experience the positive energy created from a home from home stay.
