Retro Midtown guest house in the beautiful Evergreen Historic District. Walking distance to Overton Park, Memphis Zoo, Brooks Art Museum, Levitt Shell free music venue, Rhodes College. Charming and private vintage cottage - sparkling fresh & clean.

The space

The Swallowtail Guest Cottage was built before the original home owner, a stone mason, built our 1923 bungalow. This sweet 700 sf cottage is the perfect home base to explore Memphis. It sits quietly in our backyard with a private entrance from our clean alley.

True to Midtown Memphis, the Swallowtail Cottage is an eclectic blend of styles - from vintage antiques to retro kitchen to clean modern luxuries.

Sleep deeply on the brand new queen size mattress. You can maintain focus at the antique grandfather's desk. The Cottage has high speed WiFi.

The charming retro kitchen is stocked with all of the basic equipment to create a real southern meal. (Anything else you need, you are welcome to borrow from us.) The full kitchen includes a dishwasher, electric stove and oven, and a set of stainless steel pots and pans.

For breakfast, enjoy locally roasted coffee in a french press and homemade granola. The fridge is stocked with organic milk, orange juice and yogurt. Snack on organic popcorn in a old fashioned, hand-cranked popcorn popper.

Relax in the living room on the groovy sofa or comfy armchair: read a book by a local author, or stream your favorite show on the 42" widescreen. The sofa bed is available for additional guests.

In the brand new bathroom, subway tiles surround the shower/tub. Enjoy the %100 cotton plush, clean towels and linens.

There is ample closet space, a stackable washer/dryer and central heat and air conditioning.

Guest access

The private Swallowtail Cottage is all yours. Come and go as you please. If you need anything, we live in the "big" house across the backyard.

You may park your car in the small parking space and use the private entrance from the alley. Or use the park on the nearby side street.

Our yard small backyard is well-loved by our three children and small dog. Please join us on a chilly evening around the outdoor fireplace. You are welcome to visit with the kids in the playhouse on a sunny afternoon. Or you may choose to relax in the private sitting area behind the fence, adjacent to your private entrance.

Help yourself to our backyard herb garden. Enjoy the butterflies visiting our flowers, and keep an eye out for the Swallowtail caterpillars who come to munch our parsley each fall.

The Swallowtail Cottage is accessed by keys through iron security doors, and separated from the alley by a 8ft privacy fence.

Interaction with guests

We are a family of five; our little people are 9, 4 and 3 years old. We enjoy every corner of our little bungalow and backyard, you may hear and see us in the afternoons and weekends. We spend lots of time in our backyard - playing, sitting around the outdoor fireplace, or at our patio table. But the Swallowtail Cottage is a fully separated building with private entrance, so you can you interact with us as much or little as you prefer.

Cleo, our sweet 9 year old terrier, loves to find a patch of sun in the backyard. Cleo will always welcome a scratch behind the ear, but please don't invite her into the Swallowtail Cottage.

The Cottage is stocked with guides to local happenings. Deeply involved in the community, we are happy to suggest dining, site-seeing, lectures, events and entertainment recommendations. Just let us know if you need anything.

A beautiful area to stay in and a unique property also. Sarah provided everything required for a great stay and even filled the fridge with yogurt, granola and pop which was welcomed after a long travel. The property backs onto Sarah's house and if arriving in the dark can be a bit confusing but Sarah's directions were accurate and very appreciated. My mother who I was travelling with got a bit spooked out at some of the pictures inside the place (no mum the eyes aren't following you around the room) but I think they added to the charm. I never met Sarah during our time but thanks for the stay.

Sarah's cottage was just as it appeared in photos and description of the amenities was spot on. We greatly appreciated the home from home experience whilst travelling from the UK. It was great having spent busy days touring the sights and museums of Memphis to be able to return to the cottage and relax in our own space. The plentiful selection of books on the area plus maps was a great help. The area so close to Overton Park, an amazing green space just 10 mins from the hustle and bustle of downtown was a bonus. The area around the cottage was very pleasant and we felt safe at all times in a city we didnt know. Sarah had thoughtfully provided yoghurt, granola, tea, coffee and sparkling water amongst other culinary items. It was nice to meet her and enjoy her comfortable cottage.

Stayed for a month and loved it! The host Sarah was kind and knowledgeable. Her Swallowtail Cottage was clean, quiet, and uniquely decorated. I would definitely recommend staying here if you want a location close to Downtown/Methodist University Hospital, but is both quiet and safe.

I love our neighborhood, Overton Park, riding bicycles and spending time in nature. We like adventure and travel a lot, so I have an amazing caretaker for the Swallowtail Cottage when we are out of town. When I'm not working to make Memphis more livable, I'm hanging out with my three little people, my husband, Scott, and our dog, Cleo.
