About this listing

The space

The house is located in the heart of the mountainous region of Helmos in the village of Peristera, Achaia province, at an altitude of 1100m. The surrounding massif of Mount Helmos is considered a botanical paradise.

I can provide personal guiding for a number of activities that can be undertaken in the area:
- Hiking in deep forests and alpine pastures
- Climbing and mountaineering
- Skiing and other snow sports at the nearby ski resort of Kalavrita
- Mountain biking
- River trekking
Or just exploring the picturesque villages with great local cuisine.

The house consists of two levels and sleeps up to 6 persons (in beds provided) and can accommodate more guests with sleeping-bags and carry-mats (on a spacious wooden floor). On the ground level there is a bedroom with 2 beds, a bathroom and a large living space unified with the small but ergonomic kitchen. A space-saving staircase leads to a spacious loft. There is also a storage room with tools and firewood stocked up for the winter. A wood stove provides plenty of warmth required during the cold months (usually from October to April).
The property lies on gentle slopes formed by man-shaped terraces, surrounded by wonderful views of snow capped mountains, 500m. from Peristera village's center.

Interesting sights you can visit in the area:
- The mythical waterfall of Styx, a 2-hours hike up the eastern slopes of Neraidorakhi peak
- The small town of Kalavrita (26km), economical and cultural center of the region
- Kalavrita ski-resort (12km), on the snow-packed slopes of mount Helmos, with snow usually from late December to mid April.
- Vouraikos gorge with the rack railway Diakopto – Kalavrita, a unique attraction in Greece
- The unique cave of lakes in Kastria (28km)
- The small lake of Tsivlos (10km) under the shadow of mount Helmos, among the deep conifers forest.
- The lake of Doxa (Feneos) (20km), approached only by 4WD car.

Other major attractions from Peristera village:
- Olympia, 118km
- Delphi, 208km
- Mycenae, 135km
- Athens, 182km

Interaction with guests

To explore the region and enjoy the most of it, books and maps are offered for use by guests. Once you arrive, I will give you detailed and up to date information about almost everything in the surrounding area and further more, as well as the best proposal from tavernas and picturesque villages to hiking and mountaineering info.
Personal guiding can also be provided if it is previously arranged.

Other things to note

Access to the region may be difficult in cold / snowy weather. Coming with a private car, always have a pair of snow chains in the boot and stay tuned with weather forecasts.

Lovely place for nature and adventure lovers looking for unassuming, relaxing holidays. The house is basic but very functional and fully equipped and Vassilis, the owner, is very accommodating. The view from the window is just sublime. Very close to main hiking trails of the region, which Vassilis knows very well and is happy to share.

This house is perfect. It immediately makes you feel a part of the astonishing surrounding nature. The interior is very clean, well organized and cozy - the view from the two windows of the living room is nothing but stunning. Vassilis is much more than a simple host; he is a friend who shares his home with you along with his own experience and knowledge of the area. Moreover he will share with you whatever there is in the refrigerator and the shelves (yes, you might find some great things there!). The location is great for nearby trips; raw nature lies steps away from the house. Apart from your walks and adventures in the amazing forests, five minutes away from the home you will be at the village of Solo. There you will find the tavern of Spilios who offers a unique wild mushroom tasting experience! Also pay a visit to the nearby village of Zarouchla, enjoy a coffee in the jazz bar of Eva and Petros; you will surely feel like in a movie. Wander around the streets of the unique picturesque village of Agia Varvara next to Zarouchla. Be really cautious when driving around. Heavy fog, rain and bad road conditions, make driving a demanding task. A sure option for our next time! Hoping the fireplace of the house will be an available option too!

Vassilis has been extremely accommodating and met us en route to show us the way to the house and explain the area. He also gave us many very good tips about local hikes and Taverna's. Although remote and situated in the very dramatic Chelmos mountains (National Park), his house is beautiful and modern. We had a great week exploring this very special area and it's diverse fauna and flora (one can start hiking pretty much from the house) on foot and very much hope we get a chance to come back some day.

Vassilis' place offered us a great three-day escape on the picturesque Helmos mountain. Located in the secluded outskirts of a tiny village of Achaea, it is unique in providing a great escape from the city. The house is fully-equipped and can comfortably accommodate a family of 5-6 people or a group of friends as it happened in our case. We spent two nights in late December and the heating provided by the wood stove was great. The only downside was that we were advised not to use the fireplace as there was an issue with its chimney at the time. There is a good stock of logs used as fuel for the stove in the cellar. There is also a couple of electric infrared panels for additional heating. The house is recently built and in excellent conditio. It comprises one bathroom with shower, private room with a single bed in it, a sofa bed in the living room, a double and two single beds in the attic. As an experienced mountaineer, Vasillis has food supplies in the kitchen in case the guests are missing some or when road access to other villages is inhibited by snowfalls and ice. Keep in mind that snow chains or winter tyres may be needed to access the village in the wintertime. Overall, Vassilis is a great host. He was waiting for us in the centre of the village to guide us to his place. He explained everything in great detail and provided a plethora of information about the places of interest and the activities in the area. The communication with him and his responses were great.

The place is near a small town in the middle of the mountains. The Kalavrita town (one of the best known and biggest around) is approx 40' far. This place is for who loves this kind of solutions. Relaxing, hiking, skying during the winter. The house is new, partly made of wood. There's everything inside (it's the house that Vassilis uses also for his vacation with his family). Vassilis has been good for communication and he was immediately available to take us to the house even if he lives one hour far. I discovered that he's an expert for any kind of outside activity and his suggestions and indications have been copious and precise. The fridge was full of everything. We spent two days there and my three kids enjoyed the house and the activities.

Vassilis came to meet us in the little village of Peristera and led us to his cottage in the mountains. He showed us all the house's excellent facilities and made us very welcome. The setting is spectacular with stunning views to to the surrounding mountains (still with some snow cover) and forest. It is a quiet restful place. He then gave us a tour of nearby walks and attractions and told us about the charming rack and pinion railway at Kalvaryta. There are three nearby tavernas and the one we liked best is in the village of Solos. You need a translator or some Greek as little English is spoken and road signs are only in Greek. This is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. There is no Wi Fi at the house but the tavernas have it. The description accurately describes the house.
