Centrally located in quaint Meursault, we completely renovated our 200-year old Burgundian home to include all modern amenities: two master bedrooms and bathrooms, large comfortable living room, eating room & a kitchen with all modern appliances.

The space

Just steps to the surrounding vineyards and the center of Meursault, Charmelieu (meaning charming place) is the ideal home while exploring Burgundy. This 200-year old former vineyard workers' house retains original features such as exposed wood beams, interior stone walls, oak and ceramic tile floors, and stone fireplaces. Completely gutted and renovated in 2005 and again updated in 2013, Charmelieu retains it's old world charm with the convenience of modern amenities. Owners Michael and Christie Shaps offer insider tips and recommendations for restaurants and attractions, as well as private wine tours and tastings on request.

The house has a private walled-in courtyard, two large master bedrooms with private baths, a modern kitchen and large living area. The first master bedroom has a queen-size bed and a private alcove with a bunk bed (two twins). The loft master bedroom has a queen-size bed and two twin-size beds. Both master bathrooms have full-size showers (one with a bathtub and one with an oversized standing shower) and heated towel racks. There is a half bath and pullout couch in the living room. Central heating and air conditioning has been installed--with remote controls available throughout the house.

The kitchen has been completely renovated and modernized but retains its old-world charm with tile floors, stone walls and a stone fireplace. It includes all new appliances and a large monastery-style oak table.

The house is just a five minute walk to the center of Meursault, where a bakery, butcher, grocery, pharmacy, post office, bank, tourist center and several excellent restaurants are located. Every week the local market is held in the center of town. The town of Meursault and the surrounding vineyards can be explored by foot, while a bigger city, Beaune, is a ten minute drive away. There are numerous historic sites within an easy drive.

We've had a wonderful stay at this charming cottage. The hosts (Christie and Natalie) are super helpful and attentive, e.g. a plumber was called the same day when needed. The cottage is very spacious, e.g. for a family of three we did not use a 2nd (larger) bedroom at all as the dining room, living room & our 1.5 bedrooms were more than sufficient even on a rainy day. The cottage is also well equipped. Additionally, Mersault seems the loveliest village in the neighborhood with a walking distance to a pretty central square & restaurants and shops. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable & comfortable stay.

The stay at this charming home could not have been better! Eva was there for whatever we needed to help. Michael and his wife were so attentive and accommodating. They even helped us arrange a private wine tour for 2 days, that we would highly recommend!! The little town of Mersault was just perfect and the people so friendly and helpful. The grounds and home are just as represented and very nice. I would highly recommend this home to any one! I certainly want to go back! Mitch

Charmelieu is a home-away-from-home for the Shaps family. The exposed beams and stone fireplaces add character, while the modern bathrooms and kitchen add convenience and comfort.

The Shaps' chose this property because Michael wanted to return to Burgundy where he studied winemaking. Meursault's reputation as a top wine producing village, and it's quintessential French charm made it the ideal place to renovate a house and winery.
