Waking up to the sound of a waterfall in the background makes Thilak’s is a perfect spot to bunk down in Ella. The price is for a double room with attached bathroom. There are two doubles and a triple room available.

The space

Thilak’s offers three comfy double rooms, each with a private entrance and an attached bathroom with hot water. The rooms face the waterfalls and, with the windows open, you can hear the water fall in the distance. Amidst vegetable and rice plantations and surrounded by Coconut, avocado and banana trees, the place has a very rural feel to it. Vehicles can park some 20 metres away.

Interaction with guests

We were welcomed with tea and biscuits by Thilak, a retired army officer who lives in separate spaces on the premises, together with his wife and two kids who are - curiously - both called Nadeesha. The family built the house with a loan from the bank and run it together. Things are going pretty well so far. Upon request they happily arrange food, transport and tours in the area.

We had a great, comfortable room with great care and local knowledge from Thilak and his family. Our room looked onto the waterfall but bear in mind this time of year (we travelled end of Sep/start of Oct) it is coming to the end of the monsoon season, so not in full flow although still a beautiful view. Thilak's place was approx. 20 min to both the centre and to the trail for Ella's rock. If you don't fancy the walk to the centre, Thilak can organise a tuk tuk for you and easy enough to get one on the way back. Amazing hospitality, beautiful scenery and definitely worth the visit. Thank you for everything, Thilak!

We were welcomed by our lovely host, Thilak, with tea and cakes. The view from our room was absolutely stunning and made this our most serene stay in Sri Lanka. Just a quick walk along the train tracks from central town (train station, bars, restaurants), this place is ideally located for a relaxed few days in the hills- and the best view for breakfast. Staying over new year, Thilak and his family kindly invited us to join them for a feast of curries and even gave us presents. A very kind man, our host also organised transport for us to our next location at short notice. Absolutely recommend! Basic accommodation, but with everything you need in a gorgeous setting. Thank you!

A beautiful place with a view of the smaller waterfall. About a 20 minute walk to the shops and restaurants, parts of which are quite steep, but Ella is a hilly area! Besides which, coming down to the road on our first day we saw about 30 monkeys enjoying their breakfast. The room was very clean, hot water in the shower, both fan and mosquito net provided. Our host was incredibly helpful and pleasant. The breakfast was huge and delicious. A massive from us, would definitely recommend

A superb location amidst the most awesome scenery. Some steep steps and a walk along the railway line in to the town. The kind and helpful hosts helped me with a guide to hike to Ella Rock and a taxi to next destination. Nothing was too much trouble. The room was spacious and very clean with views to die for. As everywhere in Sri Lanka the insects are a pain but I found having the fan on soon dispersed them

Thilak and his family were lovely. Very helpful, hospitable, and friendly. The room was clean and spacious with a lovely bathroom and plenty of hot water. The terrace that runs along the front of the rooms was the perfect place to enjoy the beautiful view across the valley to the waterfall. Breakfast was fantastic as were the dinners that Thilak's wife cooked for us. Some of the best food we've had in Sri Lanka. We also really appreciated the afternoon tea offered every day. A quiet oasis away from the main town but within easy reach. Would definitely recommend it.

Neverbeen offers a wide variety of rare homes off the beaten track, from fisherman's huts and tree houses to heritage homes and tea estates. Our team hand-picks and visits every home and meet all hosts to make ensure guests have a positively memorable stay in places they've never been.

We provide travellers and home owners in challenging locations with access to one another, by offering communication services, online marketing services and tourism training, so that locals can make a living off their home and travellers can get to stay in places they have never been.

As such, Neverbeen works for a world in which everyone has the chance to earn income by renting out their home, regardless of language, internet access and tourism experience.

In Sri Lanka, Dishan manages our growing group of homes in cooperation with our scouts, while Rohan creates listings and provides service. In Amsterdam, Marten works out international growth plans. Our team of in-house programmers is constantly developing the platform itself and Ernst & Young does our finances.

The first country we're active in is Sri Lanka, a beautiful country with many undiscovered places to stay. Due to it recently having opened up to tourism after decades of conflict, it is a great place to start and pilot the Neverbeen concept. We plan to expand to ten countries before the end of 2017.
