About Us:

Our dream for Red Mountain Cottages was to create a quiet retreat space for birders, photographers, nature lovers, writers, and artists to enjoy and take advantage of the tranquility of the desert. We have always had a fascination for beautiful natural settings, and this one has its own unique personality. The stark landscape of the desert with its brilliant sunlight, big skies, dark night star-studded heavens, and clean, crisp air offers a perfect setting for escaping into an uncluttered place of restoration and creativity.

After visiting Southeast Arizona on a birding trip in 2007, we fell in the love with the area and purchased a small adobe vacation home in 2008. Later, we purchased additional land around this home, including the Red Mountain Cottages property.

Larry is a bird photographer who, while in Arizona, spends time out with his camera on a daily basis, capturing images of birds who live in and migrate through this area. (website hidden)

Marti is a non-fiction writer with a passion for cooking and knitting.

For many years, we enjoyed a career as art glass dealers, founding and operating a gallery and auction house located in Santa Cruz, California which specialized in glass paperweights. The business, L. H. Selman, Ltd., was sold in 2009 to the Clark family in Chicago, who are carrying on our family tradition of promoting paperweight artists, in their new location on Michigan Avenue.

As a solo traveler in the area for birding, I thoroughly enjoyed staying in Larry's cabin. The rooms are spacious, the bed comfortable, and the kitchen stocked with all the cooking utensils needed. It was quiet and peaceful - only the sounds of nature - exactly what I wanted.

We really enjoyed living off the grid, once we got used to new concepts like hot water on demand, using the French coffee press and having a slightly temperamental gas heater. The place is stunning for sky, stars, sunrises and sunsets. You need to be aware that it takes longer to get to the house from the road since it's a 4 mile dirt road, but once there, we had everything we needed to make meals, watch birds, and learn about places to visit in this part of AZ! We really loved Larry's bird photos that were displayed on the walls. I think being here Spring through Fall would be amazing for birders! Highly recommend for folks looking for solitude and beauty in SE Arizona. Marti was very quick to get back to us for the most part when we had questions. There was just one night when we needed instructions on the heater, but we were offered the use of the other beautiful home w/fireplace as an alternative. We didn't take them up on it as we had a cozy down comforter for warmth. Go for the amazing scenery, quiet, birds, and solitude. If you want to get to town quickly, then stay in town (Bisbee or Hereford)

This place was such an amazing and relaxing experience! The view is incredible and the house is beautiful and so well equipped. I loved everything about it - a perfect place to get away from it all, relax, reflect, and soak in the beauty of the desert. The deer and birds kept me company, and the wifi kept me connected. If I'm ever in the area again, I wouldn't hesitate to return. In fact, I wish I could just buy the place and move right in forever. Thank you to my lovely hosts for such a great experience. Visit Red Mountain Cottages - you won't regret it!

Can't say enough good things. Off grid living is easy. Views are great. Birds are pretty. Bisbee is close and funky. Marti and Larry are communicative and fine folks.

This was our first Airbnb staying experience and it could not have been better. The hosts (Marti and Larry) were extremely fast in responding to our inquiry and very helpful and quick with contacting us to set up staying arrangements. The actual property and cottages are in perfect condition, containing every imaginable item you would need for your stay, including flashlights, French press coffee maker, thermos, dishes, binoculars and local birding books, chopped wood...everything! We stayed in the beautiful Quail cottage, but got to go inside the Hummingbird Cottage as well. Both are beautifully laid out, clean, and gorgeous. There was no detail left out. The bed was the most comfortable bed I ever remember sleeping in and the sheets and down comforter were luxurious. Outside, we hiked up the hill behind the house to the very top and took in breathtaking views and walked in their labyrinth every morning and also along the arroyo that skirts the yard. We didn't want to leave and I actually cried on the last morning as we were preparing to depart. It was that amazing. If you are looking for something off the beaten path (literally) and away from people, this is the perfect choice. We only saw one other person at a distance the whole time we were there - a goatherd, escorting his goats, (with their sweet bells dinging softly as they walked) up hill behind the house. Yet, the charming town of Bisbee is an easy drive and we enjoyed dinner at the fantastic Roca one night, thanks to Marti's recommendation. We plan to return and are recommending it to our families and friends as the perfect getaway.

This is a magical place. Remote but not hard to find if you use the handy map provided by your host (the last left turn is very easy to miss). Isolated but only a short drive from Bisbee, a wonderful town full of artists and inspired people. And most importantly comfortable: we stayed in the Robin cabin and had everything we needed - maps, firewood, a comfortable space and most importantly a sense of peace. If anything the photos don't do it justice - it was bigger and more well appointed than we thought it would be. If you're looking to get off the grid (but still have that high speed wifi) book this now. This New Yorker walked away a lot less jaded and I hope to return soon.
