Original terraced cottage located in the mining town of Loanhead. Located just outside the city bypass within the greenbelt. 2 miles from the Pentland hills, 2 miles from the famous Roslin Chapel & 30 mins to the thrilling Glentress bike trails.

The space

A recently decorated double bedroom within a traditional stone terraced cottage, situated at the top end of Loanhead village, just outside of The City of Edinburgh. This is the perfect location for hill walkers, outdoor enthusiasts or people who simply prefer to stay somewhere a little more quiet and relaxed, but with the added benefit of being just a stones throw away from the city.

Please note that I have adopted two young cats, Myrtle and Methuselah, so unable to accept guests with pets unfortunately.

Breakfast is a buffet style help yourself, which I lay out on the kitchen trolly.

I aim to be a ethical consumer and my promise as an Airbnb host is to support local independent retailers rather than supermarkets. I do my best to provide local produce from The Newleaf Coop in Edinburgh or Edinburgh's farmers market which runs every Sat. Soya milk is provided as standard, please state if you'd prefer organic cows milk. Wholemeal bread, Filter coffee, a selection of tea, jam (sometimes from the farmers market) and fruit. If I have time I make granola and on cold days porridge in the slow cooker. I'd be very grateful if guests could let me know of any dietary requirements or preferences prior to check in, to avoid any unnecessary waste. I thank you in advance.

Use of internet (WiFi), linen and towels are all included in the price. The property also has double garage, that can be used for the storage of bicycles and outdoor equipment. A private carport parking at rear of property is available for visitors use. The kitchen includes patio doors leading to a private garden with decking and outdoor furniture.

The bathroom and kitchen are shared spaces.

Loanhead; part of Midlothian county, is situated approximately 5 miles from the city centre and is served by a 24 hour bus service.

Edinburgh boasts stunning gothic architecture with panoramic views and traditional cobbled streets. There are myriad of museums and galleries to provide some culture and wide selection of bars, cafés and restaurants to refuel the weary traveller. Not to mention the spectacular Edinburgh Castle, built in the 12th century and situated in the heart of the city centre.

Loanhead offers all the conveniences of modern life set in beautiful countryside surroundings. A couple of miles walk, or cycle and you’re out in the country where you can enjoy the space and tranquility that Scotland is famous for.

Edinburgh is obviously a popular day trip but there are also lots of activities closer to home in and around Loanhead:

Experience the stunning carvings and mystery of the unique Rosslyn Chapel 30 minutes walk from the house. Made world famous by Dan Brown's "Da Vinci Code". Practically every surface of the Chapel is covered with intrigue carvings of figures and scenes.

Explore the network of paths that run throughout the leafy Roslin and Bilsten Glen, which connects onto the Musselburgh to Dalkeith cycle route.

Walk, run or mountain bike The Pentland Hills. Spectacular views of the city with signposted walks and is home to Hillend Snowsports Centre.

Learn about the Scotland's long mining history and experience the atmosphere and noise of a working coal pit at the Scottish Mining Museum (rated 5 stars by the Scottish Tourist Board)

Explore the Edinburgh's tropical paradise all year round at the world's longest running butterfly house at Edinburgh's Butterfly & Insect World. Walk amongst hundreds of free flying butterflies in the large indoor rainforest. There's also a wide variety of creepy crawlies on display with daily handling sessions.

Please, no smoking

Thank you for looking :-).

Guest access

Guests will have access to kitchen facilities, bathroom and private carport parking.

If on the rare chance it's sunny, guests are more than welcome to relax outside, where I shall provide table & chairs.

Interaction with guests

I try to greet guests personally whenever possible. I like to hear about where my guests have come from and their travel stories. Some guests like to chat, some prefer their own space. I'm happy with either and endeavour to provide my guests with a relaxing and homely airbnb experience.

Other things to note

If you're unfamiliar with airbnb, then welcome :-). Most airbnb hosts run airbnb as an additional income to their full time job. We do our best to cater to each and every guest, each guest brings a new experience and offers us a chance to improve our service. Sometimes we get it just right, sometimes we fall short of peoples expectations. Please do give back constructive feedback, we value it.

Booking accommodation is a very lengthy and frustrating process, equally creating a listing that covers everything can take months of tweaking.

To help me and other airbnb hosts please include a photo and a brief sentence of whom you are, who you're travelling with and the reason for your visit. We're opening our homes to each other, so please invest some time in this, it means a lot.

Katy and Craig are lovely hosts, always ready to help. They gave us some very good adresses in Edinburgh which made our trip fantastic ! Their room is clean and decorated with great taste. The bus to central Edinburgh is only a few seconds away from the house which is very convenient. Breakfast was great with organic soya milk/jams/cereals ! They have two lovely cats! We'll be back !

Katy was a phenomenal host to me during the few nights I stayed with her. She provided a nice choice of breakfast foods, a quiet and very comfortable room to sleep in, a bright and lovely garden, and all the interesting conversation I had time to share with her. An excellent host whom I would highly recommend!!

Response from Katy:
Thank you Bryanna. The interesting conversation must have been with Craig, not me ;). I'll look out for you and a crazy lab puppy up the Pentlands. All the best Katy

Katy's house offers easy access to the heart of Edinburgh but is particularly close to the Pentland Hills - which was perfect for my visit! Katy and Craig were very warm and welcoming, communication was great and they were very happy to do anything to make my stay a pleasant one.

The room is well furnished and there are excellent facilities available in the house and nearby. I used it as a base for accessing the Pentland Science Park, which is either an hour's walk through beatiful, off-road countryside or about 25 minutes from the bus stop directly opposite. Prince's Street is about 20-25 minutes away by bus. Katie and Craig were happy for me to use their well-equipped kitchen and they're fine with you cooking non-vegan food. All in all, very happy and would stay again.

We had a great time in Edinburgh, the house is around 30 mins by bus to the city centre, which wasn't too bad for us, it was actually quite a pleasant journey, the buses come fairly frequently and cost £1.60 single and £4.00 daily. Katy is a lovely host and she has 2 adorable cats. The only downside was that is was a little bit cold in the house, being a Scottish cottage. Other than that, everything was fine. Thank you!
