Description

The space

Pohoiki Bay Cottage is a one bedroom retreat nestled into an alcove on a sprawling 17 acre oceanfront estate which captures all the majesty and mystique of Puna. Crashing surf, ancient rainforest and organic orchard, in pristine seclusion. Experience the ultimate privacy afforded by natural jungle bordering three sides of the property with a spectacular 1000 feet of Pacific coastline. The lush jungle is home to I'o (hawks), pueo (owl), a rainbow of songbirds, and monarch butterflies. Stunning sunrises and glittering milky way included!

The entry is gated and property is maintained daily by onsite ohana and weekly caretaker. Your peaceful retreat is our kuleana!

Located on the storied "Red Road" between Kapoho and Kalapana, minutes from swimming, surfing, snorkeling, lava boat tours, this is the ideal destination for anyone wanting to experience the lush tropical aura of Hawai'i.

Your hostess Mary, born and raised in Hawai'i and 35 year resident of Puna, can offer guidance and assistance to suit your wishes. Surfboards, bodyboards, snorkel gear, and bicycles are provided for exploring. Just 2 minutes to 2 great surf spots, and 4 minutes to Ahalanui Warm Pond. Prefer a peaceful retreat? Relax with a book on the breezy lanai or watch a movie on Netflix. A bbq is also provided.

Along with the queen bed in the bedroom, there is a queen sized convertible sofa in the living room and comfortable futon on the screened lanai. The spacious eat-in kitchen is thoughtfully equipped with a full size gas stove and an ample, energy efficient refrigerator w/ freezer.

The quaint village of Pahoa (15 minutes away) offers excellent dining choices, gourmet bakery and coffee shop, boutiques, book store, playhouse, supermarket, natural food store with bakery and hot food bar, office center, and CVS pharmacy.

We are GREEN, GREEN, GREEN! - totally off the grid. Energy from the sun, household water captured from the rain, and landscape irrigation from a well that taps both spring and ocean. All are very high capacity systems but we work with the weather of the day and are conservation minded.

This is a serene tropical escape. E komo mai.

The neighbourhood

Puna is an eclectic mix of locals, transplants and visitors from around the world. Pahoa is a growing town featuring many locally owned shops, including gourmet fresh seafood, and the oldest theater playhouse in the state. We are also home to lava flowing into the ocean, warm springs, tide pools, black sand beaches, lush rainforest jungle, and ancient native O'hia forests.

Getting around

A rental car is best for full access to the majesty of the Big Island. The Hele On bus serves Puna twice a day and offers circle island public transportation for $1! Or feel the tropics glide past as you ride our bicycles to a local swimming area or park.

The cottage is a marvelously secluded, quiet residence with beautiful landscaping, fruit trees and access to the owner's house for whale watching, conversation or a good cup of coffee. If you are looking for a great getaway off the grid but with all the amenities you will love this place!

Highly recommended. Mary’s cottage is indeed worthy of all the glowing reviews here. From the clean, comfortable and well equipped cottage and the beautiful 17 acre grounds to the responsive and accommodating hostess. Mary’s daughter Ren was always available and ready to make our stay extra special. We ended up spending a lot of time on the property exploring the jungle and walking the coast but also enjoyed snorkeling in the Kapoho Tide Pools just down the street. Don't miss the Maku’u Farmers Market it's only open on Sunday and is more of a bazaar with produce, gifts and great prepared food tents. The cottage kitchen had everything we needed to prepare all of our meals but occasionally we would go to nearby Pahoa for dinner. Our favorite restaurant was Kaleo’s. Extensive menu and great food there. We will be staying here again on our next visit to the Big Island.

We loved the location and listening to and hiking by the ocean. You're off the grid, but you wouldn't know it, (unless you want cable TV and nearby restaurants.) Some people might find it remote. We didn't. Mary and Ren are very personable and pleasant. The house was well stocked, clean and comfortable. We hope to return.

Best Airbnb experience ever! You will not disappoint with anything at this beautiful and unique cottage. Everything was the exactly same as described. The place was perfect for me and my husband. Communicating with Geckos was fun, too. :) Ren gave a tour around the cottage and ocean area, and it was amazing to see all the beautiful nature and environment on the site. It's in the jungle, so expect many mosquitos, spiders and bugs. Ren prepared Mosquito smoke coils and sprays and it worked really well (Thank you so much, Ren!) The beauty of nature is everywhere in this area. We truly enjoyed our stay here, and we will definitely come back and recommend this place to friends and families.

The cottage is a dream! We had a fantastic stay during our honeymoon with Mary and Ren. Sitting and reading along the undisturbed natural coastline along the Pohoiki Bay is something we'll remember for a long time. It was also a great launchpad for exploring other things around the island, such as Volcano National Park, black sand beaches, and yoga and watsu at Kalani.
