The space

Enjoy total privacy in this remote cottage, located 15 minutes from Ka Lae (southpoint), 10 minutes from Kahuku (southern entrance of Hawaii National Park) and 20 minutes from famous Punalu'u Black Sand Beach. Situated on 1.4 acres of organic gardens, cottage Hale Moana offers the perfect hideaway for your holiday adventures.

This cottage does not come with Pete's famous breakfast, but exceptions can always be made.

Guest access

We have 1.4 acres of well tended property, you are welcome to explore the grounds and hang in the hammock under our lovely Kukui nut tree. We have two rental cottages located on the property, (Hale Huna & Hale Moana) and if they are both occupied, we just ask that you give the other guests their privacy, and simply indulge in all the common area has to offer. There are chairs, benches and a hammock. The property has many fruit trees and ornamentals. Mango, Papaya, Date Palm, Hawaiian Lime, Ka'u Orange, Grapefruit, Fig, Passionfruit, Kukui, Royal Poinciana, Curry Leaf and many more!

The neighbourhood

We are ideally situated between Hilo and Kona, on the last 80 miles of undeveloped coastline in the State of Hawaii. It's 15 minutes to South Point, 5 minutes from the southern entrance of Volcano National Park (Kahuku), 40 minutes to the main entrance and 20 minutes from the famous Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, where the Hawaiian green sea turtles can be seen basking on the sand.
There are 2 restaurants and a bakery in the small town of Naalehu. Shakas Bar and Grill and Hana Hou.
There are also a couple dining options in Ocean View. Ka Lae Garden Thai and Mehe's Bar and Grill.

Take along our complimentary snorkeling gear, boogie board and cooler for a great day at the beach.

See you soon!

Getting around

Make sure you rent a car to access our part of the island. An all terrain vehicle is always the best bet for your travels around the big island, but an economy car will always to the trick. Just remember to go slow, as many roads on the Big Island are unpaved (as is the last 3/4 mile to the cottage), and remember, you can't always trust your GPS!

This perfect little hideaway away was a great place for my husband to spend our honeymoon. It was a great place to get back to nature and leave our crazy world around. We enjoyed the books in the room and the relaxing on the deck with a few of our gecko friends. Its far enough off the grid to enjoy a full night sky in which there were tons of shooting starts. The breakfast is highly suggested and delicious!! Thanks for letting us stay in such a tranquil place!

Cozy little hut in an incredible location. We loved eating our meals on the veranda while listening to the birds and watching the ocean - perfect way to unwind. You may find a few bugs and geckos inside at night so be careful to keep doors and windows closed, but no big deal otherwise. Thanks for the great experience!

Pete and Sara's place is perfect if you are looking for a quiet getaway in nature (surrounded by fruit trees and with views to the ocean). The cottage was well-equipped, both with toiletries and essentials required in the kitchen. Unfortunately, Wifi was not always working (but that's probably not necessary anyway as you are there to enjoy nature). The main negative was that our cottage was not ready at the time of checkin (although we arrived an hour after checkin time) - making it necessary to wait for the cleaning to be finished.

The place is very nice! The covered wrap around porch is a great place to hang out and everything was very clean.

This place was amazing, and beyond our expectations. beautiful cottage, with a spectacular view! Pete and Sara were excellent hosts and the breakfast is a must! The cottage was clean, and so cute, with a great location. Green/black sand beach were both very close, and volcano only about 30 min drive. We really enjoyed our stay here, and will be booking again on our next trip to the big Island! Thank you pete & Sara

WOW! The cottage and the views are absolutely legendary. It's 100% nature. Everything was exactly as described and clean. Pete and Sara were very communicative and extremely friendly. Upon arrival Pete was there to greet and guide us. We would definitely stay again and recommend this to anyone. Mahalo!

You won't want to leave! This was our favorite place on the big island (out of 5 on our trip). The cottage is set on a beautiful property with fruit trees and a tropical garden-like setting with expansive ocean views towards south point. You are greeted with a basket full of fruit and warm pineapple banana bread (I'm sure it changes per stay). The place is well stocked with all necessary cookware, condiments, coffee, kitchenware etc and you see the sunrise right from your bed. Other items are also included like snorkel gear, boogie board, beach towels, games and books. The balcony and hammock are great for hanging out and enjoying the views and seabreeze. Pete and Sara live nearby and were very helpful and friendly; I recommend having the breakfast at least one morning if not included with your booking. Fair warning it is a little off the beaten path down a dirt road for a few minutes but only about 10 min from Na'alehu, 20 min from Ocean View and about 25 min to South Point. We would definitely recommend the Hawaii Hideaway Cottages and hope to visit again someday.
