The space

Our completely remodeled corner townhouse has more than 30 windows, two large bedrooms and 24 feet of upstairs-hallway closet space; two and a half bathrooms; and a new kitchen with granite countertops situated in the middle of an open and inviting first floor.

Our home was selected to be part of the 2014 Capitol Hill House and Garden Tour.

On the main floor, the front door opens into large dining room with custom-built oak staircase and eight large windows. Hidden behind a wall full of paintings is a full bath with shower. Dining room flows into kitchen, in the center of the first floor, with two large windows looking out onto the neighborhood and all the foot traffic--parents with children, neighbors with dogs. Kitchen flows into living room with three large windows and glass door onto first level of Victorian-style double-level porch perfect for enjoying summer meals, the garden and the welcoming neighborhood.

Below the first floor is an occupied English-basement apartment with its own private entrance.

The second-floor master bedroom opens out onto screened porch which looks down Duddington Place. Master bath has large shower and two sinks in front of two large windows with cellular shades. The dome of the Capitol can be seen from the second floor windows and porch. Washer/dryer in hallway between two bedrooms. On second floor is half bath next to front bedroom/study where you will find computer workstation and full-size bed that folds into a handsome Murphy-bed frame. This room, the largest on this floor, has seven windows and views of two public parks.

In the photo, I'm the fellow without the dark glasses. The picture was taken in one of my favorite places in the world--St. Petersburg, Russia. I am a retired university professor with advanced degrees in journalism and mass communication. These days I'm proud to say that I'm a runner, triathlete and quilter. The man with the dark glasses is my husband, Bert Kubli, who retired several years ago after a career at the National Endowment for the Arts. He "gutted" and rebuilt our home on Capitol Hill, which was originally built in 1897; so today, all that you see inside our home, Bert built--walls, floors, staircase, new kitchen...everything. The remodeling was finished about four years ago. Today he's using his skilled master-builder hands to create various art projects.
