The space

In India they call it "Home Stay" and this is just what I can offer you at the Spout.
Different from a professional guest house, this is an invitation to be in my home, complete with a dog who sleeps at the bottom of the stairs, a cat who will join you in the night if you don't shut the door and chickens who will join you for breakfast on the terrace.
Your room is a railway goods van converted into a double bedroom with king size bed.
( Please note there is no toilet with the wagon. The toilet is down some stone steps, across the yard and in the utility room in the house. You will need to bring a torch for night time excursions and I can lend you an umbrella.)
Step out of the house and climb some steps up to your sleeping place. (Say goodnight to the horses as you pass.) The stream will sing you to sleep and the birds will wake you in the morning.
In winter accommodation is in the house in a double room opposite the bathroom.
Bath or shower in pure spring water from the hills above the house.
I can accommodate a maximum of two people, offering one king size bed in the railway wagon.
Breakfast is served in the farmhouse kitchen in the company of the dog and the cat and your hostess. Continental style breakfast: juice, cereals, bread, toast, tea, coffee etc. Pot luck evening meals may also be possible if required (arrange and pay on site). As far as possible, ingredients are organic and locally sourced.
No internet, no mobile signal, just peace and tranquillity.
Garway Hill is on the border with Wales in the Herefordshire Marches. There is a network of lanes and wild moorland where the common opens out to the top of the hill.
You can enjoy good pubs in the local villages. Hereford, Monmouth and Ross-on-Wye are all under half an hour away by car and Hay-on-Wye with its famous bookshops is a little further.
Then the hills of Wales are yours to explore.
Garway Hill is on the long distance walk, the Herefordshire Trail.

I was made to feel very welcome indeed not only by my host but by her dog, cat, three horses and the trio of chickens who laid eggs for my breakfast every morning. The carriage was very comfortable and exactly as described. It proved to be a calm uplifting retreat.

It was a real pleasure staying with Viv. The carriage is very clean, cosy and comfortable and the bed is luxurious. She was a very attentive and kind host: she made me delicious nutritious smoothies every morning and I really enjoyed talking to her when I was in the house. Her pl…

The location around Garway is beautiful and a perfect spot for getting away from it all. Viv has a small holding with a very friendly collection of horses, chickens, cats and dogs. Vivien is very welcoming and her breakfasts of scrambled eggs( fresh from the hens!) we're amazing …

The Spout Railway Carriage Retreat is an interesting small-holding hideaway among the woods, hills and single track lanes of Herefordshire (have a GPS or an OS map to hand). If you are looking for a quiet get-away-from-it-all, far from the rush and clamour of urban living, you wi…
