The Masonboro Island Reserve area has several small islands with beaches, and one large main island 8 miles long that fronts the Atlantic Ocean where you can enjoy the beach. Experienced kayakers can bring their own kayaks and paddle to these islands. Paddling may take anywhere from 20 minutes at a strong paddle to 40 minutes at a leisure paddle to get to the big island. The small islands are just across the Intracoastal Waterway. So, you could be at the closest small island in 10 minutes. There are local tourist boats that will take you over to the main island for a fee. There are nearby places where you can rent kayaks and join their group tours. NOTE -- beginning kayakers and kayakers who are inexperienced with water currents, winds, and navigating thru busy waterway boat traffic should have an experienced guide with them. And also to help navigate the local tides, currents, winds, soft mud flats, and oyster bed areas.

Other rental homes nearby - If you have other people who want to vacation at the same time as you, who need their own space at the same time you are staying at this house, there is one other vacation rental within walking distance from this house.

Bonus - The guest house and yard is located next to the owners' family home. So....if you need anything while you are here, you are welcome to talk to us, give us a call, or text with any questions or needs you may have during your stay. We will be happy to help you get the grill started, light the fire pit, change a light bulb, hand you a fishing pole, suggest a place we like to dine, etcetera. We really want you to enjoy your vacation.

Guest access
Guests have access to the entire guest house, the immediate yard surrounding the guest house, and upon signing the owners' pier access waiver, guests will have full access to the owners' pier and floating dock at all times during their stay. We welcome you to bring your own small boats, kayaks, paddle boards, etcetera.

Other things to note
The Masonboro Island Reserve can only be reached by small boat, kayak, paddle boards, etcetera. You can get there from the owners's pier. There is a public boat ramp near the guest house at the New Hanover County Trails End Park, and other nearby large boat ramps at Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach. There are also private fee ferry services to the Masonboro Island.*

Boats usually land on the beaches along the north and south sound side of the island. Trails allow visitors to walk across the island to access the beach. Visitors may also walk down the undisturbed ocean beach for miles. The most fragile habitat areas, which can be easily impacted by visitors, are dunes, grassy flats, high and low marsh grass communities, and eelgrass beds. The public may utilize beach areas, open tidal flats and areas between dunes as long as the vegetation and habitat are not altered. *

Neighbourhood highlights

Neighborhood was established in the 1950's with farms and small fishing shacks. As time has past, only one farm remains, and most of the old fishing shacks are gone. There are several modern new homes mixed in with the older homes of their time and era. Newkirk Road is a one lane roadway, so be sure to share the road.
