East facing bedroom in a gracious 1909 Craftsman style home. Designed and built by architect Wilson Wyeth (who designed churches for the Episcopal diocese in the same period) the house is in the shape of a cross giving the house an open feeling.

The space

This lovely east facing bedroom with a shared bathroom is in a great 1910 Craftsman style home. Please note the bathroom is shared with us. There is also a 1/2 bath downstairs when the main bathroom is occupied. Back garden with dining table for evening relaxation. Front garden has a swinging bench seat. Breakfast included in the rental, use of the kitchen by arrangement. The other main areas of the house are also open to you if you like. Owners, Pam and Richard are well traveled and interested in meeting people from all over the world. House is in a quiet neighborhood with street parking and lots of lovely streets for walking.
We are a shoes off house upon entering and there are cubbies to store your shoes when you come in.

Our Alarm system is managed by AT&T. The keypad for activating and deactivating the the system is in the hallway under the light switches. When you enter or leave the house there is a repeating bell alert that doors have been opening and you have 45 second to deactivate the alarm before it alerts AT&T. NOTE: even when the system is not activated thre is a short bell that alerts you as doors are opened and closed. This allows you to know if someone has entered the house while you are there. The code for deactivating the alarm is 0690. You do not have to set the "away" feature when you leave. Just the "stay" feature is sufficient and you have 45 seconds to depart before the alarm sets. If you do not exit in that time frame, you will need to deactivate the alarm and then re-activate it or the alarm will go into the AT&T system as an unauthorized entry. If we are not reached in a short period by phone by the AT&T personnel, the police will be called to investigate. The resulting charge by the police for a false alarm is $85 and it will be charged to the airbnb guest if this occurs. Don't worry about memorizing these details. We will leave a description of the alarm system in the guest room for your referral!

The plumbing is old in this house. Do not over stuff toilets with paper! If you have a sudden overflow problem, there is a plumbers helper in the closet straight across from the bathroom.

Interaction with guests

We have a lot of travel in our own lives and have stayed in airbnb as well as more "traditional" B&Bs in many places. We like to talk about our travels and learn about yours. We especially enjoy talking at breakfast so we hope you will join us downstairs in the am!

Other things to note

Like to hike: The Regional Parks in the Berkeley/Oakland Hills are spectacular destinations, or if you just want a light walk, the 3.5Mi/ 5K walk around the beautiful Lake Merritt in Oakland is easy to get to from our house and a great way to enjoy water birds who live or migrate through this area each year. You can rent boats at the Oakland Parks and Rec Sailboat House (sailing, canoes, kayaks, paddle boats) and get a different perspective on Oakland's downtown area. This lake is part of the Pacific Flyway for migrating birds and there are many different birds on the lake at different times of the year.

Like to tour unusual places? Spirit Alley is a one of a kind place! St. George Spirits, Hanger One Vodka, Rock Wall Winery, Faction Brewing Company and more are located on the edge of the flight line in hangers vacated by the Naval Airbase in Alameda, just south of the Port of Oakland Tasting rooms, tours and food can be enjoyed while looking at incredible views of SF across the water. Have a beer, sip some wine, eat a meal and watch the sun go down behind the cityscape...a real treat!

First Friday of every month the Uptown area of Oakland host the Art Murmur party! Telegraph Avenue is closed off for several blocks and there are street bands, food trucks, specials in restaurants and all the art galleries are open to few local artists' work.

Second Friday of every month there is a bike ride from Downtown Oakland to other parts of the East Bay...East Bay Bike Party is great fun and we have 2 bikes that we can share.

Last Friday: Check out the Paramount Theatres classic movie night where you can feast your eyes on this most spectacularly restored Art Deco theatre and for $5 watch a great odd classic movie on the big screen...just like they were filmed to be seen!

Like things a bit strange? The Chapel of the Chimes mausoleum is more like a labyrinth of a library than a place were people are laid to rest. Most of the departed were cremated and their ashes were stored in vessels that look like books! Designed by local architectural wonder, Julia Morgan, this unique building is a great place to explore. Just outside the gates of Mountain View Cemetery, you can hike through this wonderful cemetery with great views of Oakland, San Francisco and beyond and then step inside the cool interior of the Chapel of the Chimes and discover this most unique place.

We loved every minute staying with Pam and Richard in Oakland. Most importantly, they made us feel at home. They gave us the right amount of privacy, yet were always available for a friendly chat. The shared bathroom worked effortlessly and the bed was firm, yet comfortable. We slept very well. The breakfast they provided was available when we wanted it and was a delicious extra bonus making the start of our day easy. The neighborhood is very central to everything we wanted to do. We mostly walked throughout Temescal and Piedmont feeling safe at all times, only occasionally grabbing an uber. Pam and Richard are very knowledgeable about the area and provided helpful information for outings. Great home! Great hosts!

Pamela and Richard were great! Very hospitable and friendly. I pretty much kept to myself since I was in town for work and either left the house late or came back super late. House was very clean and charming. Would love to stay again!

My partner and I had a perfect stay. Our hosts were very kind and friendly. Sadly, we were too busy to get to know them better. We both enjoyed playing on the beautiful grand piano, and I was pleasantly surprised by the nice breakfast laid out each morning.

Pamela And Richard User ProfilePamela And Richard is a superhost.

I am a retired teacher who still works as a substitute, married to Richard who is a project manager at AT&T. We have two grown children who live near. I helped found a boys' choir school, have been a restaurateur and managed my husband, Richard's, general contracting business. Now I row crew with the Lake Merritt Women's Masters Team and raise bees! I love to cook, bake bread, brew beer, garden, read, knit. We both love to listen to music and watch British television programs! We are well travelled around the world and enjoy meeting people from all over! When we traveled (before airbnb existed) our favorite thing was wondering into a town we had never been to before and finding a random B&B for the night. We have some great memories of experiencing the world's towns by getting up close and person with the people. Now we use airbnb for our travel plans! We love to eat, but we can't live without coffee, and chocolate is nearly as important!
