About this listing

Carnie Cottage is a traditional Hebridean stone-built cottage with a large new extension, as well as stunning newly finished event space.

The space

Carnie combines the cosy attractiveness of the traditional cottage, with the light open spaciousness of a modern home.
This beautiful home is located in the center of the island, 300m from the island shop and Post Office, 500m from the Community Hall and 1km from the Lismore Museum and cafe. The cottage is conveniently located, enjoying easy access to walking and cycling routes, both North and South of this beautiful island.
The accommodation in the original cottage consists of a spacious living room with wooden floors and solid fuel stove. It is furnished with two large comfortable couches and an easy chair. Also included is a generous bedroom with twin bunk beds. A spiral staircase in the living room leads upstairs to a bright, open plan carpeted attic, housing one double bed and two single futons. The front porch includes ample storage space for boots and coats and a has a small WC.
The original cottage retains much of its traditional appeal but is complemented by the new extension which benefits from a fully fitted modern kitchen with electric hob and oven, fridge and freezer, plus washing machine and tumble drier in a small utility room. The whole cottage is well insulated and enjoys oil-fired central heating as well as a traditional stove in the living room.
The extension has wooden floors throughout and French doors leading onto a large garden. The main room consists of a spacious kitchen/dining room with a dining table able to accommodate 8 persons. There is a small utility room leading into a bathroom. A small double bedroom completes this harmonious addition to the old cottage.
The house is equipped for up to 8 people and the enclosed garden has ample space for children to play in, and WiFi throughout.
In the back garden and linked to the house with a covered walkway, sits a beautiful timber constructed indoor workshop, boasting panoramic windows, wooden floors, a hub for creative energy. This unique space is home to the famous Lismore Music retreats with the wonderful music legend Mairi Campbell. This perfect addition to Carnie is ideal for group meetings/ workshops/ social gatherings, or simply to have some solitude to practice an instrument in comfort and tranquility.
Linen and towels are included in the price
Lismore has its own fantastic suppliers of beef, eggs, veg, salad and herbs which we will send you details of once you book with us. Our local shop can also provide a 'welcome' box of supplies if you order in advance of your stay. Other than anything you may order, please come prepared with food supplies as our local shop (only 300m away from the cottage) is open only between the hours of 9-5pm, with early closing of 1pm on a Wednesday and Saturday, and closed on Sunday.
Carnie is a treasured family holiday home. We are excited to share it with you, and trust you will look after it as we do.
Lismore is a stunning island, with lots to see and do if you appreciate a quieter pace of life. We have a wonderful cafe (around 1 mile away) open 11-4pm everyday from April, please see website to check opening times. Lismore also has a historical heritage center and museum (next to the cafe) and lots of monuments and visitor attractions steeped in myth and history.
There is a great pub on the mainland, called the Pier House which you access off the Port Appin passenger ferry (4.5 miles away from the cottage) which serves evening meals and can be visited during the summer timetable (please check Calmac website) when we have an 8pm boat, and a 9.30pm by request (12 hours in advance).

Getting to us;
Lismore is accessible from two ferry ports: Port Appin ferry terminal: Which is around a 5 minute passenger ferry crossing, and costs around £3 return trip per adult. You can leave you car on the mainland in Port Appin, this is where all the islanders leave their cars too. The cottage is 4.5 miles away from this ferry port, and there is a bookable island taxi once your here.
The other option is the Oban Ferry Terminal: Which is around a 45 minute vehicle and passenger ferry crossing, costing around £5.30 per adult for a return trip. You can bring your car across on this ferry, for a cost of £23 return trip. There a a few long stay car parks in Oban. The cottage is 2 miles away from this ferry port.
Please note ... you will need to organise your own transport from either of the ports, unless you plan to walk. There is a local taxi service, and also local bike hire who can deliver to the ferry for you, details of which will be in your confirmation email.

So what are you waiting for? Come and enjoy a wonderful Hebridean retreat! xxx

great location and lovely accommodation on a very beautiful island, with so much to do and see! Very well equipped and comfortable house, really home from home! It's not entirely clear from the description, but there's a good double room on the ground floor, a 4 berth bunk room, and then upstairs a large double with on the other side of the stairwell two futons. Although the upstairs bit doesn't have a door it's still reasonably private, and there's another downstairs WC at the front, and the kitchen is really spacious. Would thoroughly recommend this to anyone considering staying on Lismore.

Carnie cottage on the beautiful island of Lismore was a wonderful place to begin our honeymoon. It's a cosy place in a good location, not far from the useful shop with a nice garden and views from the kitchen/dining room out to the fields and mountains beyond. I wish we'd had more time to explore and would certainly return. Jayne was very welcoming and helpful.

Fantastic cottage to get away from the humdrum of life. We had a comfortable and relaxing time in Carnie Cottage - it was everything we expected.

A wonderful stay and a great host. We went to Carnie Cottage for a weekend in March. Jayne is an excellent host and was very fast to respond to all our emails etc. She also picked up our groceries for us as the island shop was going to be closed by the time we arrived. The cottage is cosy, secluded and peaceful, with a great fire, big kitchen stocked with everything you could need. There is even a pantry filled with essential ingredients (flour, sugar, spices etc.). The island has plenty of places to explore (we went to Castle Coeffin, which looks just like Weathertop from Lord of the Rings and is guarded by some very friendly sheep and ponies. The island seems to be particularly good for birds, with the only sounds at night the birdsong drifting across the island. All in all, great. I'd definitely go back.

Carnie Cottage was a fantastic place to stay in a beautiful part of the country. There was plenty of space for me plus six friends and a dog. The cottage was well equipped with everything we needed and more, and was a lovely cosy place to come back to after exploring the island. Jayne was a great host and in the run up to the trip was always quick to get back to me and answer any questions I had. Can't recommend this place enough and hope to get back there some time.

The previous reviews are all correct: it's no exaggeration, Carnie Cottage provides a fantastic experience in a breathtaking environment. However, let me mention some aspects of our trip & stay that came as a surprise. 1. It is not easy to get on and off the island. The winter timetable for the Oban Lismore ferry kicked in in the middle of our visit (October 24). Sailings become so rare, that in the end we gave us our plans to spend a day outside the island; i.e., we stayed on the island for our entire vacation, and - to some extent - felt locked to the island. Next time I would more carefully check the ferry sailing times before booking. 2. The taxi service mentioned in the description of the place was not accessible for us, as the driver was off the island. This is quite understandable and natural; but without the taxi, we had to take the car to the island (using the Oban ferry), hence could not benefit of the services of the Port Appin ferry (getting us locked to the island, as mentioned above).

I am a stay at home mummy to my three wonderful children aged 15 yrs, 12 yrs and a wee mischief maker aged 22 months
I have lived on the beautiful Isle of Lismore since August 2011 having relocated from Staffordshire. We holidayed here and fell in love with the place straight away which resulted in us leaving our jobs as staff nurse and my husband as a policeman. It was a big gamble but one we've never regretted......we live in a beautiful part of the world with an amazing community.

5 things I couldn't live without?
1. My beautiful family. My husband and my kiddies are my life
2. house is crammed with them. I love to reminisce and look back on happy times.
3. Chocolate .....the love of this is stopping me from seeing my feet and tying my shoe laces !!!!
4. Scotland....I adore the place and have so many places that are still on my wishlist to visit. To me its the most beautiful place on earth. My ideal day is a backpack full of good food, walking shoes on and head off into a glen for another adventure
daily tonic for the day, especially the sounds of my kids laughter.

I live not far from Carnie cottage so I'm always on hand should you need me.

Kind Regards
Jayne x
