About this listing
A peaceful rural setting where you can take walks, listen to birdsong, read books and generally lounge around under the carob, almond and olive trees to your heart's content. A place just to be....
This unique, eco-dwelling is situated in the hills just 15 minutes from the sea front of Portugal's Algarve coast. Made using ancient building techniques using lime, reeds and thatch it blends in perfectly with its natural surroundings of fruit trees, hills and birdlife - the perfect spot for a break from the hustle and bustle of city life. You are very close to nature here with owls, geckos, Golden Oriols, woodpeckers and more.
You definitely need a car to get around the Algarve.
We have two cabins which are 2m apart, the other is at https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/343732. and they both share kitchen & bathroom facilities so please be aware you might not be entirely alone if the other cabin gets booked at the same time. The cabins can be rented together, or by separate couples.
Our environment is rather wild and we now have a small, unfenced swimming pool, as well as a winding stream with a small pond at each end, so having children under 12 here is just not possible. Sorry.
Remote & Wild
We are situated in the hills just a 15-minutes drive from the sea front of Portugal's Algarve coast, (and 45 minutes from the open ocean on the west coast). The cabins blend in perfectly with their natural surroundings of fruit trees, hills and birdlife - the perfect spot for a retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. You'll definitely need a car to get around the Algarve!
The style of accommodation is SMALL, clean and simple, with wooden furniture, antiques, artwork, books and a few curiosities from my travels to create a cosy, interesting ambient.
The pixie hut sleeps four, in two rooms linked by a spiral staircase. We also have a little round wooden cottage right next door which sleeps 2 people.
You DEFINITELY need to rent a car since we're off the beaten track here and although there is a bus stop a 20 minute walk away you can't exactly depend up on it......shall we say. And sometimes it even arrives too early which is obviously worse than if it were regularly late!
Please print the driving instructions to get here rather than the map as they are far more reliable since the roads are not exactly signposted in these rural areas!
We provide bathroom towels for you and dishtowels for the kitchen. But you will need to bring your own beach towels.
What else......I think that's everything. But if there's something I've forgotten or something you need please just ask and I imagine most requests can be fulfilled.
Internet & Wi-Fi
The signal doesn't quite reach down to the cabin so if you'd like to check your mail come up to our porch and go online there. At night you're welcome to come inside.
The shower block is a short walk through the garden. This is gas-powered so it's always hot. We have a small gym as well for the worthiest of our visitors! There is a washing machine just outside which you can use if needed. Please bring your own beach towels as our towels are only for the shower.
We have a second (solar) shower and toilet attached to the back of the new kitchen and they are only a couple of meters away from your cabin. Be warned though that on a cloudy day, of course, the shower won't be warm.
There is a large, wooden kitchen equipped very BASICALLY with a fridge, a cooker/oven and sink, as well as storage for food and utensils & plates. There is also an out door bbq area for the intrepid visitor. You will need to buy your own food, drink, and all the things you usually require for living.
Both showers and the kitchen facilities are shared with the other cabin.
Art & Culture:
Fonte da Estrela is owned by a sculptor so there are studio facilities available on request. For painters, the landscape is perfect for water colour in autumn and spring, and in the summer a stronger palette of oils will surely keep you occupied. We can send you off in the direction of a number of bijoux art galleries showing the work of new and emerging artists as well as some by the more established. We also have an art trail which will take you to the studios of individual artists living and working here in the Algarve.
If painting or drawing is something you'd like to do then I can arrange to have a professional artist to come and teach for a morning or a day. POA.
There are a number of yoga teachers and studios around. Just ask and I'll show you the schedules. A class costs 10 euros less if more than ten sessions are purchased in one go.
There is good surfing to be had during the summer and winter as well as kite surfing and body boarding. Equipment can be hired at the sea front. There are boats to be hired and fishing trips to go on as well as diving. Also you can take a ferry from Olhão or Faro to local islands and empty beaches that go on for miles even in the height of summer.
Just 10 mins away there is a beautiful river with pools and small rapids and idyllic picnic spots. A 15-minute drive takes you to the nearest beaches, and the excellent, public swimming pools in Loulé. Aside from that we overlook a natural reserve so there are plenty of good walking, cycling, painting and bird-spotting opportunities. Horse riding can also be arranged.
Food & Sight Seeing:
There are a good many, affordable local restaurants as well as some very up market dining experiences to be had in the area. (See: (website hidden)_Algarve.html). If you want self catering then the local grocer is just down the road, there's an Aldi at Fonte de Boliqueime, or a large supermarket in medieval Loulè, is 15 minutes away. And on Saturdays there is a terrific gypsy market as well as food and veg market in the town. With its rich past the Algarve has many historic towns, castles, ruins, Roman burial grounds and natural sights to visit along the coast.
Music: During the summer the Algarve is rife with music festivals and local towns compete with each other to hold their own festivals. There's a great jazz festival in July and concerts throughout summer with international artists as well as local bands and musicians playing. Ask for more details when you know the dates of your holiday.
Faro airport is 20 mins away, and the nearest train station is 15 mins away in Loulé. Local buses are cheap and take you to Spain or the beautiful, cultural city of Lisbon for day trips.
The pool, the garden, the car park and the wifi.
Interaction with Guests
I live a stone's throw away from the cabins but aside from being available for questions or help of any kind, I try to respect the privacy of my guests, leaving them to do their own thing. Marc is also on site (plays a mean guitar!) and will help when I'm not here.
The surrounding countryside is tranquil and full of birds with a lovely, small river about a 20-minute walk down in the valley.
Public transport is not very efficient where we are, for the needs of a tourist who wants to go to the beach and so on. (It's more for locals travelling between the hill towns.) That's why a car really is vital to have here.
Other Things to Note
Please be sure to rent a car whilst you are here!!
There is a fee for late check in of 20€. Normal check-in is from 3pm til 7pm. Check out is before noon.
Please remove the rubbish and recycling when you leave.
Please be very careful with cigarettes, candles and leaving glasses outside. Fire is a real danger.
Please remove your shoes on entering the lodge.
Please switch off all lights and heating when possible to save energy.
Please use water with the awareness that it is a scarce commodity in the Algarve. When washing up its good to throw the grey water on nearby plants as much as is possible to avoid wastage.
We like to recycle our rubbish so please use the bins provided which are marked up to make it easy for you. Please take you rubbish with you when you leave.
