I have two listings, the other is at https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/343732. This unique, eco-dwelling is situated in the hills just 15 minutes from the sea front of Portugal's Algarve coast. Made using ancient building techniques using lime, reeds and thatch it blends in perfectly with its natural surroundings of fruit trees, hills and birdlife - the perfect spot for a break from the hustle and bustle of city life. You are very close to nature here with owls, geckos, Golden Oriols, wood peckers and more. You definitely need a car to get around the Algarve.
Anyone under the age of 5 is free but having said that I should warn you that our environment is rather wild and so having small children here requires constant vigilance. On top of that the pixie house has a small spiral staircase, which is irresistible for small (email hidden)t the best recipe for a restful holiday. But then again, if you have under 5's with you I don't imagine anywhere is all that restful ;)
The Pixie Hut sits 2m apart from another wooden cabin (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/343732) with which it shares the kitchen & bathroom facilities so please be aware that there could be other people sharing your environment.
Please print the driving instructions rather than the map as they are far more reliable and also have a GPS co-ordinates since the roads are not exactly signposted in this rural area!
It sleeps 4 people in 2 separate rooms, but the rooms are connected by a spiral staircase so they're not exactly private. This might suit a family better, or alternatively, two very friendly couples!
We also have a 2nd wooden dwelling right next door, which accommodates 2 or 3 people in one open plan space. If needed we can add a camp bed or mattress.
The style of accommodation is SMALL, clean and simple, with wooden furniture, antiques, artwork, books and a few curiosities from my travels to create a cosy, interesting ambient.
If you fancy a night camping down at the river we have a 3 man tent which you can borrow,
What else......I think that's everything. But if there's something I've forgotten or something you need please just ask and I imagine most requests can be fulfilled.
Internet & Wi-Fi
The signal doesn't quite reach down to the Pixie Hut so if you'd like to check your mail come up to our porch and go online there. At night you're welcome to come inside.
The shower block is a short walk through the garden. This is gas powered so its always hot. We have a small gym as well for the worthiest of our visitors! There is a washing machine just outside which you can use if needed. Please bring your own beach towels as our towels are only for the shower.
We have a second (solar) shower and toilet attached to the back of the new kitchen and they are only a couple of meters away from your cabin. Be warned though that on a cloudy day of course, the shower won't be warm.
There is a large, wooden kitchen equipped very BASICALLY with a fridge, a cooker/oven and wash basin as well as storage for food and utensils & plates. There is also an out door bbq area for the intrepid visitor. You will need to buy your own food, drink, and all the things you usually require for living. We provide bathroom towels for you and dishtowels for the kitchen. Just bring your own beach towels.
Both showers and kitchen facilities are shared with the other cabin.
Art & Culture:
Fonte da Estrela is owned by a sculptor so there are studio facilities available on request. For the painters the landscape is perfect for water colour in autumn and spring and in the summer, a stronger palette of oils will surely keep you occupied. We can send you off in the direction of a number of bijoux art galleries showing the work of new and emerging artists as well as some by the more established. We also have an art trail which will take you to the studios of individual artists living and working here in the Algarve.
If painting or drawing is something you'd like to do then I can arrange to have a professional artist to come and teach for a morning or a day. POA.
There are a number of yoga teachers and studios around. Just ask and I'll show you the schedules. A class costs 10 euros less if more than ten sessions are purchased in one go.
There is good surfing to be had during the summer and winter as well as kite surfing and body boarding. Equipment can be hired at the sea front. There are boats to be hired and fishing trips to go on as well as diving. Also journeys to local islands and secret beaches can be arranged.
Just 10mins drive away there is a beautiful river with pools and small rapids and idyllic picnic spots. Slightly further away are the nearest beaches, and the excellent, public swimming pools in Loulé. Aside from that we overlook a natural reserve so there are plenty of good walking, cycling, painting and bird-spotting opportunities. Horse riding can also be arranged.
Food & Sight Seeing:
There are a good many, affordable local restaurants as well as some very up market dining experiences to be had in the area. (See: (website hidden)_Algarve.html). If you want self catering then the local grocer is just down the road or the nearest large supermarket in Loulè which is 15 minutes away. And on Saturdays there is a terrific gypsy market as well as food and veg market in the town. With its rich past the Algarve has many historic towns, castles, ruins, Roman burial grounds and natural sights to visit along the coast.
Music: During the summer the Algarve is rife with music festivals and local towns compete with each other to hold their own festivals. There's a great jazz festival in July and concerts throughout summer with international artists as well as local bands and musicians playing. Ask for more details when you know the dates of your holiday.
Faro airport is 20 mins away, and the nearest train station is 15 mins away in Loulé. Local buses are cheap but not very reliable. You can however catch a national bus which are very reliable and cheap to take you to Spain or the beautiful, cultural city of Lisbon for day trips. Having a car here is essential! In dire stratits you can hire bikes but
I live a stones throw away from the cabins but aside from being available for questions or help of any kind I try to respect the privacy of my guests, leaving them to do their own thing.
The surrounding countryside is tranquil and full of birds with a small river about a 20 minute walk away.

the pixie hut is a lovely place to sit down in the sunshine, have a hot tea and just.....enjoy. It is not only a great place to be in summer but also in winter when the sun is low and you can feel all cosy and warm in the pixie hut. A great place to share with a loved one. There you will find a place where you can forget about the whole world being in the middle of nature and have some rest from your life. it is also a perfect place to explore the Algarve you can find yourself in a different town/city each day as there are so many places to visit just a short drive away. This little part of peaceful paradise that Toin and her family built is a unique and perfect place to be enjoyed alone, in couple or in family. The infrastructure is warm and welcoming, you feel home right away inside the Pixie hut and you have everything you need, kitchen, hot shower,.. Beside the host Toin and her family are thoughtful, down to earth and so friendly, welcoming you in their sweet world. We were really sad to leave this place. but we hope to be able to return one day to visit again.

Es un sitio genial para unos días relajados. Toin y su madre son muy amables y ayudan donde puedan. Si volvemos a la región, la finca de Toin está arriba en la lista. Muchas gracias. Obrigado.
I feel very lucky to have found the wonderful world of the Pixie Hut. Toin and her daughter Ruby are a delight and the accommodation more than I was hoping for. I left with my energy levels replenished and ready to tackle the world again.
Toin is super gastvrij. Het is wel aan te raden een autotje te regelen.
Its the loveliest place i have ever been to. Toin was so nice and friendly, it was a pleasure to meet her and her family.
The Pixies are really comfortable. You are entering the room and feel at the first moment at home. The kitchen, which they made on there selfs, is quite impressive Everything is really clean and you have everything what you need.
The nature around is beautiful and not touristy at all, which is really nice to find at the algarve. Its the perfect spot on earth to realx and come down. The nicest part was that toin even invited us to a dinner with her family, which was really lovely.
So thx Toin for this nice experience, if we can we will come back.
We had a wonderful and relaxing stay at Pixie Hut. Although located a little off the beaten track (a car is a must), the location was great to get to beach and local restaurants. With the property located away from the hustle and bustle, it is great place to relax, read a book, just enjoy the nature (and the cute little dogs running around) or watch the stars at night. Hostess Toin was very helpful in giving us lots of tips where to go, shop for food and how not to get lost on the roads :-)
I would recommend this place to anybody looking to escape the stress and rush of modern life.
We had a wonderful stay a the Pixi Hut. Very nice vibe, quite and a good base for exploring the Algave.
We stay there for a few days. It was a wonderful time with nice people, great beaches and a beautiful landscape. The best place to relax or hang around. For all how wants a great holiday, check it out. We love it.
Wonderful place to stay, really relaxing.Toin is an excellent host, so welcoming it felt like just like staying with old friends.
Pixie hut is a fantastic place to stay, definitely worth re-visiting.
My husband, myself and our 6 year old son stayed in Toin's Pixie Hut for 6 nights and 7 days. It was our first overseas holiday as a family, therefore our son's first time abroad. My husband and I could say that we are well travelled people, so the first thing to say is that this was undoubtedly, unequivocally and without question the most special and wonderful holiday we have ever had. We had searched Airbnb for unusual and special places to stay, regardless of country or location. We struck gold. Yes, the Algarve is remarkably beautiful and there is something for absolutely anyone to enjoy … to relax, or go nuts, to sight see and soak up history and culture, to people watch or just plain adventure. You will find it all. But if you are lucky enough to share the unsuspecting corner of magic that this very wonderful woman has created, then you are being handed upon a silver platter the opportunity touch a piece of heaven. Ok, the basics. Her directions, descriptions and details on the website are accurate to the letter. Just read them. The photographs on the website are wonderfully accurate and before our visit, I kept looking at them over and over and showing them to friends. When Toin showed us in, I nearly popped with happiness. It isn't very often in your life that you are allowed to walk into a real live place that springs to life straight out of one of your favourite fairy stories. In addition, all facilities, kitchen, toilets, showers etc etc are immaculate and of a standard to please any fussy English person or first time nervous country camper. We were there first week of September and wondered about insects, especially with regard to our 6 year old first time abroad. Mosquito nets worked perfectly, the odd swish of insect repellent at night, and being sensible with your lights / door / window meant that none of us suffered. My husband got one on his knuckle and my son and I – nothing, zip, nada. The hut is perfect for a family. The spiral staircase is fine for an able 5 / 6 year old but probably not younger. My son adored having his upstairs floor with double bed to himself and whizzed up and down the staircase with glee. That's the basics... now the special stuff. Just be there, and breathe. You can explore the garden and come across all sorts of beauty spots and treasures. You can take a short drive down the hill to a deserted river safe for a swim – complete with swing for kids to splash from. I have made a tribute in the form of a youtube video with music. If you are considering a visit, do have a look. Here is a link. (website hidden) If that doesn't work, type “The Pixie Hut – Finding Fonte da Estrela” in Youtube search and it will come up. It is Toin herself who...
