Octopus Reef in Kabalana - rated among the top professional Surf sites in Sri Lanka – is the perfect destination for a beach holiday. Surf, snorkel, fish or laze in the natural ‘reef pool’, sunbathe or just sit back & enjoy its breathtaking sunsets.

The space

The villa is an antique-styled house with stunning sea-view porch and balcony, two large air-conditioned family rooms with lofts leading to the deck outside and modern attached bathrooms supplied with solar-heated water.
Breakfast is included & we are happy to allow our airbnb guests use of the kitchen to prepare their own meals (charged @ Rs. 1,000/- per meal & Rs. 1,500/- for BBQ). What we do advice however, is that you enjoy your holiday and allow our Chef to delight your palette. The fresh seafood BBQ spread of calamari, fish, prawns, crabs & oysters caught in the vicinity is a special treat.
Whatever you decide to do, we are sure you will love the place and take home with you many special memories.

Things to do
1.Swimming & Body Surfing – The Beach on your left (in front of Sky Idyllic, 600 meters) is the best. You can walk into the ocean at waist-deep level for 200 meters. However, the sea can be rough & currents could drag you, so stay close to shore & get back if gets rough. Alternatively walk 100 meters to your right past the boats & you will find a sand-bottom channel for boats, perfect for swimming if the sea is not too rough. The rock pool is great for kids, but please avoid if fishing is in progress.
2.Snorkeling – The rock pool in front (30 meters to your right) is the best spot for snorkeling. Swimmers can ask a fisherman to accompany you on other side of the Reef towards open ocean.
3.Surfing – Kabalana is rated among the top professional Surf sites in Sri Lanka. Beginners start on left & Pro’s surf in front of “the Rock”.
4.Photography – Capture the colors of Sunsets over the ocean on your right.
5.Fishing – The Rock pool has been famous for fishing long before the hotels came. Do not climb the stilts (poles) without permission of the owner*. However feel free to fish on the reef.
6.Folk Art Museum - You will be pleasantly surprised at the charming museum consisting of folk art, chariots, tools & equipment. It was built in memory of “Martin Wickramasinghe”, a native of Koggala & regarded as the father of “Sinhala” literature. who drew inspiration from the village environment. Ideal family visit (entry Rs. 200 per person, Opposite Fortress Hotel in Koggala, 2.5 km).
7.Mirissa (further down the coast) & Unawatuna are cool beach spots with restaurants, cafés & entertainment though Unawatuna can be crowded.
8.The Galle Dutch Fort is a World Heritage site, & a rare “living Fort” with cafes, museums & an old Dutch church.
9.Temple Art – “The Kathaluwa Temple” is an ancient temple within walking distane from the villa. Rare classical Buddhist art is still visible here despite the ages.
10.Boat Rides* – Koggala Lake is one of Sri Lanka’s largest natural lakes with many tiny islands. A boat ride in the evening is breathtaking, but get there before 5 pm to enjoy the scenery.
11.Whale watching – Take a boat out in Mirissa (30min drive) for an experience of a life time. Be there at 6.00am. Contact Manager*

I literally can't rate this place highly enough. We had a magical 5 nights at Octopus Reef and could barely drag ourselves away when we had to leave. The location was perfect for adventures, the rooms were huge, airy and extremely comfortable. The style of the place ticked all of my boxes and the view couldn't be beaten. The hospitality of the manager was second to none and he really made our stay. His beautiful smile and wonderful persona was a delight to come home too and he really catered to all our needs, including ordering tuk tuks and the most delicious home cook supper. He really is one in a million. Very highly recommended and can't wait to go back again.
