Description

The space

The secret lake' is a definition of a previous guest, that perfectly fits to Iseo Lake.

Being overlooked by its most famous 'cousins' Como and Garda Lake, our lake remains mainly unknown even to italian mass tourism which prefers to head to Garda.

The advantage is that the area is still unspoilt and that the touristic offer is not made 'only' for tourists, but for locals as well. We have so many beautiful places here that you will be surprised how such a gem can still be hidden from traditional touristic routes.

Fonteno is located on the hills above Iseo Lake (northern Italy) in the Lake District in Lombardy, near Bergamo, Milan, Brescia and Orio al Serio, Italy's most important low-cost airport. Fonteno is known as "the lake balcony" because it offers unforgettables views on the lake.

Our house dates back to the beginning of 1600, but don't panic, it was completely restored four years ago. It is on three floors:
- at the ground floor there is the kitchen which opens on a small lovely garden. There is a porch with a table where we usually eat outside;
- at the first floor there is a bedroom and a bathroom;
- at the second floor there is the master bedroom, another small bedroom (bunk bed) and the bathroom.

For relaxing outside, we have a hammock, deck chairs and barbecue. And the view on the lake and the mountains, of course.

Important: the house is in the historcal centre of the village and it has no direct access by car. There is plenty of parking places nearby, all free of charges. You will have to walk 150-200 metres from the parking.

The house is in a sunny position, central in the village and quiet.

In few minutes you can reach Lovere (included in ' I borghi più belli d'Italia' Italy's most beautiful small villages and Sarnico, or Bergamo and Brescia.

In one hour and a half you are in Milan, and in three in Venice. Orio al Serio airport, Italy's most important low-cost airport, is only 36 km away. The motorway is also 30 minutes away.

In the Iseo Lake there is Montisola, which is the biggest lake island in Europe. In Montisola cars are not allowed (there is only a mini bus) but you can hire bicycles there. Ferry is 7 km from Fonteno.

Try a one-day or one-night cruise on the lake with dinner and music!

In Lovere there is a windsurf and sailing school and it is possible to hire the things for windsurfing.

In Fonteno there are two bar, two small food shops, the post office, three playgounds for children, two hotels/restaurants and two agriturismo (rural restaurants in farms); on the whole territory there is plenty of restaurants.

Fonteno is a great place for hiking. Directly from the door you will be able to follow the many paths which will take you to our mountains with great views on the lake.

We are near several touristic places:

Lago Iseo 5 min,
Lago Endine 5 min,
Franciacorta (world famous wine district),
Valcalepio (wine district),
Lovere 15 min,
Sarnico 20 min,

We had a wonderful week at Cristinas House! Unfortunately we didn't get to meet in person as Cristina was on holiday herself. Still we kept in contact through text messages. From those I can say that Cristina is a very helpful host, who really wants her guests to have a nice holiday. In the house you will find a letter with lots of tips what you can do in the area. The house is very lovely and offers great views on the lake. It is very well equipped and you can see that Cristina hast put some thought into decorating and arranging everything. Fonteno itself is really pretty with all its narrow alleys. The area around the lake is beautiful, but you definetely need a car to get around, we especially recommend to go to Iseo, which we found is a really lovely village to stroll around. We really enjoyed our stay and would have loved to stay longer!

Cristina is the perfect host, taking time to understand what we wanted to experience while we were in the area and making recommendations, to the warm welcome we received on arrival. The house is lovely and very well equipped. The view, even though we didn't get the best weather, was stunning. No picture or words can quite capture it. The area as a whole was fantastic. We took a winery tour of the local Franciacorta region which introduced us to Il Mosnel's wonderful sparkling wines. Food in the area is generally very good and in the case of Al Guelfo Negher in Solto Collina, exceptional. Christian, chef & owner is passionate about locally sourced ingredients and the risotto is the best I've had. You'll need a car to get around the villages & towns, speed limits are.....there.....but locals seem to add 20km/h by default. Roads are in good condition but Italian signage is very much of the "turn now" variety so pay attention to your navigation system. Go for a walk along the promenade at Riva di Solto, at night you will see bats skimming across the tops of the water and this medieval village is truly beautiful. Cristina will provide you with a fantastic list of restaurants and attractions, all the recommendations are good. If you like beautiful scenery, great wine, tasty food (especially the cheeses!), you will have a lovely holiday here. We will definitely be back.
